[Luke Nelson]
Supporting decision making is where people with disabilities
get support to make decisions.
What I have learned so far is it's such an important part of people's lives to be able to learn that you can make decisions with support and having the right people around you to make decisions.
My name is Luke Nelson. I'm a policy officer with Inclusion Australia. I live with cerebral palsy. It's so important for people with disabilities to have their own decisions.
It's a human right to make decisions because it's their life. It's their choice.
I made the decision to move out of home when I was 23. I talked to a lot of people. I talked to friends, colleagues, my parents mainly about how I was going to do it.
It makes me feel empowered.
It makes me feel that I've got a big thing, a decision in my life that's already made. And it certainly was an adventure. But I'm so glad I've made that decision.
[Luke speaking on-line]
co-design with people with disabilities...
[Luke Nelson]
I've done a lot of things around disability in the disability field
and I was lucky enough to be asked by Inclusion Australia to come on board to do this work with the NDIS around co-design for supported decision making projects.
And my role involves talking to people, reading about policy also going to a lot of presentations and readin a lot about supported decision making.
I think that if you're not taught properly or given the chance, then I think a lot of people with disabilities, they say that's my life.
This policy will give people the chance to know that supported decision making is a real thing, that it can be delivered and that the NDIA is willing to work with people with disabilities to make them feel included.
You can talk to your family, you can talk to friends, you can talk to staff, you can talk to a lot of different people.
It's been a wonderful experience to be part of change because that's what it is.
