Oxfam Kenya through partner, Merti Integrated Development Program (MID-P), under the Asal Humanitarian Network (AHN), is responding to drought impacts on communities in Isiolo with clean water and sanitation, hygiene items and public health promotion activities, to protect women and girls from extreme vulnerability occasioned by the effects of the long drought period witnessed in parts of Kenya.
Period poverty alienates women and girls and is a barrier to their equal participation and enjoyment of socio-economic rights. In the Arid and semi-arid lands, the deprivation is even compounded by the cyclic climate induced emergencies that keep them out of school quite often. These also conspire with other factors like culture and taboos that view menstruation as dirty and publicly disapproved.
