I would like to think so, but the final singles by The Supremes with Jean as lead singer were terrible. Motown had lost its way, and I think Jean realized that. Motown's operational model had changed by the early seventies. Unfortunately for The Supremes, they didn't have anyone in the group who could write or produce hits, or who could find hits for the group. Acts like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, who could write and produce their own music, did well in the 70s. Acts that couldn't, namely Diana Ross and separately The Supremes, didn't do as well.
One of the very best Supremes songs....without Diana. Who would have guessed?! Jean Terrell was a very underrated singer, but had big shoes to fill, no doubt!
I remembered this song as being by the Supremes. But I didn’t realize it wasn’t Diana Ross singing at the time. Then I found it it came out in 70’s after DRoss had gone solo. But it sounded so similar to her.
@@orane3549 He found out that his discovery could sing a world better than the lady he was promoting for movie star. So he unplugged the trio and gave the lady his all.
@@edgarsoberontorchia3697 Bingo! You said it!!! Diana complained to Berry if she felt threatened by anyone more talented, or likable than her and got him to crush them.
Gosh, was she, wow,,, I would have crawled to your feet wimpered to you like adog, just to had a date with you,,, one day with you would have brought me a life time of time of happyness,,, honistly, maz,,, by to you, xxx
God bless Frank E Wilson for writing this and other timeless classics....All the Supremes had to do was deliver it in style and they did that in an abundance - one of the greatest Motown tunes ever
Damn this song was good, and these ladies!!!! I miss those days. I saw this episode on Soul train! I thought it was '71, but it was '73. man time flies. The 578 people who gave a thumbs down are DEAF. Thank You Supremes for this.
~~ " Pick a decade and stick to it " ...thats my motto--- I'm pushing 73 and happily living in the sixties ...I got my shit together and it stayed together .
Jean Terrell was the lead singer of the Supremes after Dianna Ross departed the group. Man.....Ms.Terrell was no joke! Her sultry voice did it for me back when I was a young lad. I remember listening to these great Motown classics in the early 70's.
Yvonne Sanders I just heard a live version that was very good but this one gives me chills every time I listen to it. They’re lip syncing this one I’m sure.
Surely the consensus must be that, forgetting the with or without Diana noise, this is right up there with any Supremes groove. Killer jam. Old school rules.
At 60 I look back on these days and miss them so much it brings tears to my eyes. I would give anything to live them again. We had the best cars and music ever. Did I mention the Women ? They were so beautiful. The fat tatted cows were all travelling with the Circus.
concuerdo en que es una magnifica vocalista, pero el lugar debió ser de Mary por derecho de antigüedad, es como cuando esperas un acenso en el trabajo por ser el que ha estado al pendiente del puesto esperando subir :)
@@simon2077 what do you mean ? You said the country lost mowtown that sounds to me that Motown is no longer in business no need to be a rude fucking asshole
Absolutely Rey Cara: Jean Terrell far far better singer than Ross, and this was a stronger unit of Supremes vocally and visually that just never got promoted
This reminds me of the beautiful women ( Grandmother and mother ) that raised me. Pure class. Look at the passion that Jean, Mary, and Lynda has. Priceless beauty
Jean Terrell, the ultimate professional who clearly enjoyed this performance with the other two, they all look so happy performing this classic Motown song. Lyrics very appropriate today, what with wars going on in Israel/Palestine and Ukraine. Why can't we all live in peace?
One of the greatest soul songs ever by one the greatest grouups ever Also never forget Florence Ballard ,her contribution to the Supremes made them who they were.
Jean had such a sweet and rich voice, Diana was more about mannerisms and TONS of facial gestures, while Jean didn't need to do much physically 'cause her voice alone was THE BOMB!!!
Leslie James I guess you're basically right. Big money or even the hope thereof often brings out the worst in people I guess that's show business THE MUSIC IS THE THING!!!
I played this song every morning before going to school in the 60's on my luggage style record player. It is amazing to now know the lead was not Diana amazing what we were presented was not truth. From then to now 2019 my Motto has been " Trust but Verify " as with " 3 can keep a Secret if 2 are dead . Ben Franklin
@@monicabella7894 You're wrong, in 2019 because of her dedication to the historical preservation of the group, today MARY WILSON = THE QUEEN OF THE SUPREMES...........Diane, WHO?
What i wouldn't give to have women like these singing today, their voices singing in sweet harmony, with style and grace long past away when rap and computers came into our world, forever to stay...
+Franklin NJ Search better mate. Unfortunately the hypes nowadays are computer made music and rap indeed. But these sort of groups still exist. You just have to search a little better ;)
+Franklin NJ I challenge anyone to give a logical reason why rap music can't be as good, to hate a genre that impactful is as bias as it is thoughtless. For the record hip-hop is one of the few genres that even keep this kind of quality music alive through sampling. Don't have different forms of creativity and free speech, all kinds are great!
Another thing about this record: Notice how as Motown production reached perfection, you hear nothing but music. Every space in the background has sound, some subtle some louder, all driving the melody along. It's a "wall of sound" but not like Phil Spector's. It''s somewhat subtle. But this is what Motown records was about all along, making records you simply could not resist loving.
Well Jean Terrel and the other supremes are now supremes legacy! The first on went with florence and Mary! There are no others with a true supremes mindset! Go go go Jean cindy sherry and the wrest! It is now your world! Let the world accept you with your stories! They will! 😎😎😎😎
Mary... she was having sooo much fun here... how did we ever got to lose such style, grace, beauty, talent.... this is my favorite post- Ross Supremes’ song.. NEVER been able to listen to it just once... Rest in eternal peace, Mary!!
R.i.p Mary... a beautiful force to be reckoned with... her dreams became a reality. From being tough as hell, and totally believing in her and her sisters. Never forgotten dear girl, woman, diva, and so much more 🥰 a full life 💕🤗💕
I can see Mary is happy singing this song. She was a very emotional woman, and had her ups and downs. Nobody can take away her and Flo's contribution to the Supremes. I am thankful to have lived in the time when these great groups and songs were popular
Even though Barry Gordy did not give a crap about the Supremes after Diana went solo Mary and the Supremes still rocked it! Up the ladder to roof us wicked awesome also!
My two favorite Supremes songs are Stoned Love and Up The Ladder, made after Diana Ross left. Nothing against Ms. Ross, but I think the rest of the group was under-appreciated.
I think THIS is my favorite Supremes song. Thank You Jean, and ladies. I miss this so badly..... Just wonderful music. God to be back one more time in 1970. Just being 12, at the time to me I think it was the best year of America. African-Americans were being realized as they too, were Americans. At least I saw it that way. I went all through school with Black kids, and I lived in a small Kansas town! I guess the small town I miss too. I pray America can feel this feeling again.
Max R. Absolutely love this song . Thought it was DR singing it when it came out in ‘70 and forgot she had already left the group. Being 13 and living in Detroit you’re so right. What a great time it was musically.
This is a fantastic single. To me it has the flavour of 70s black pride, the kind of thing that we saw in lots of music of that time, eg Marvin Gaye with Abraham Martin and John and very soul versions of songs by the Four Tops eg Still Waters, Its all in the Game, etc. Soul music seemed to just spill out, whether TSOP or Stax or wherever. I think the Supremes were even better in the 70s. There was just an explosion of great soul.
Saddened to hear of Ms. Wilson's passing. As a youngster in the early 70's, these were my favorite Supremes hits. Was too young to fully appreciate their Motown heyday hits.
Solid soul pre-disco 70-71. Very danceable. Great hook, mantra. Cute and controversial lyrics. Crisp and easy listening music. Luv the New Supremes. Luv that stoned love. Thanks, Supremes. Vive les rock soul pop and retro freaks...
Love this great song by the inimitable Supremes.. For me you can keep Diana Ross. Jean Terrell, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong were the real talent. The great Frank Wilson who wrote this rarely gets the credit he deserves.. Marvin Gaye's Chained is another of his, along with one of the most loved and recognised northern soul songs in history "Do I Love You". Also, "Love Child", "Up The Ladder to the Roof" and "All I Need" The Temptations..
Interesting. But I believe Kenny Thomas (Yennek Samoht) wrote most of the song Stoned Love and Frank Wilson produced it. Oddly enough I can’t find a single picture of the guy anywhere or much about him at all.
I wish someone could take this song and do a beautiful video as a way to pay tribute all those people who lost their lives or were injury because they were different. When will the hate stop. The Supremes really sang this song and the message still ring true today as when it did back when it was first release to us. Right on Supremes.
Being 59 now I well remember all this wonderful happy and joyous music which spoke to the masses about the hope for a better life for all and many of us at the time listened and tried hard to be better people..We could sure use that same sound from today's artists now..
I'm an old Brit now but remember listening to my older cousin's Motown Chartbusters LPs ... loved my some Motown n Philly sound ever since... now with RU-vid I can get to see the old SoulTrain originals we never got to see in the day...
Beautiful Voices, Beautiful Song, Beautiful Ladies. This song is a prayer that is needed more today than ever before. Turn to Christ & receive the gift to love unconditionally, even of our enemies. Amen!
