This verse is from Surah As-Saffat (Chapter 37), verse 102 of the Holy Quran. It narrates the poignant moment between Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son, Prophet Ismail (Ishmael). The verse highlights the ultimate test of faith and submission to the will of Allah.
In this verse, Prophet Ibrahim shares with his son the divine vision he had, in which he saw himself sacrificing Ismail. Despite the gravity of the situation, Prophet Ismail responds with unwavering faith and obedience, encouraging his father to fulfill the command of Allah. His response, "You will find me, Insha'Allah, among the patient," exemplifies his profound trust in Allah and his patience in the face of a severe trial.
As Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son, Allah intervened and provided a ram to be sacrificed instead. This act demonstrated both Ibrahim's and Ismail's absolute submission to Allah's will.
This story is commemorated annually by Muslims around the world during Eid Al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice. Eid Al-Adha honors the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah's command. It also celebrates Ismail's consent to being sacrificed and Allah's mercy in substituting the ram for Ismail, showcasing the themes of devotion, trust, and surrender to the divine will. Muslims observe this occasion by performing a sacrificial act, usually of a sheep, goat, or cow, and distributing the meat to the needy, symbolizing the spirit of giving and compassion.
