Surf Etiquette: Are you surfing respectfully?
Please share this if your local surf spot has an etiquette problem.
I noticed something different with the last swell at Trestles. Surf etiquette seems to be getting better. Maybe it was just a fluke day but we can hope right?
Thanks for watching. I'm Brad Jacobson and these are my stories.

The quality / skill of the surfers at Trestles is likely higher than most at Malibu. If it's a sign of things to come than glad to see it!

honestly loved this video. the malibu chaos is amazing to watch, but this felt good to watch. kind of felt like watching drift cars on a track. the crashes / poor tandems are fun, but when two cars (or a whole line of them) link up and drift together like gods... it's so sweet

Trestles is a training ground for elite surfers, so most don't wanna shay-et where they eat, they're motivated by status in the hierachy.

Simply paddling out at Malibu when there’s 200 people already in the water is disrespectful lol

Great to see this! I went to San O for the first time yesterday and felt a lot more of this etiquette compared to places in LA. As someone who is in the beginner phase of this journey, my general mindset is that you should give right away to anyone who is out there before you and it’s pretty easy to tell when someone’s at a higher skill level than you and you should also give them right away - and you can usually learn something from watching them! I don’t understand the idea of paddling into a wave that someone else is already on and is 2 feet away from you, to me that’s just common sense to not do that 🤷‍♂️.

Brad thank you so much for doing this! Need more platforms doing the same thing. Ever since Covid things have gotten completely out of hand! Everyone decided to learn how to surf but not the etiquette! Appreciate you

Maybe this video will reach the eyes of those kooks in Malibu and teach them a lesson or two.

Malibu has more kooks and longboards. Much harder to observe rules when there are beginners and surfers sitting at different zones based on short vs long boards

1st point Malibu has been closing out and sectioning off (for Malibu), quite a bit lately - which leads to questions about who's making it and who's getting burned. Trestles by contrast has maintained A Grade shape this season which leads people to show more respect.

could be a factor but definitely very little etiquette at Malibu regardless lol

@@ebifurai415 When the waves are right at Bu, and the crew are on it... etiquette gets enforced. Nobody drops in on Alan or the Morgan brothers. When people see the rules being enforced - they tend to act right, more.

@@anotherworldviewispossible i'm sure there are a handful of locals no one burns but i feel like every time i've been there there's 3-4 people on every wave. what always gets me is people making eye contact with someone ripping the pocket to shreds and then dropping in anyway lmao

@@ebifurai415 yeah, it's pretty ruthless. I'm actually pretty skilled at removing people, or surfing tandem if it's someone I know, who's good. But I usually just wind up surfing Secos, anyway.

I believe that etiquette is basically a habit shared among those who have mastered a strict set of rules.

You deleted my comment on your Trestles video, yup the truth hurts! So one mO time, Trestles is SD, but there are a million + that flock from OC. OC & SD have respect for one another, LA wave riders don't. Can we get to the brass tax bottom line on this? It's sooo simple but people are sooo evil. When someone has the right of way don't drop in on them; not only do they have priority, they earned priority by out paddling and out positioning you. It's called The Golden Rule (some of your parents didn't teach ya that.) IF you do drop in on someone look behind if they're still there be cool and TURN UP. It's that simple! But if you choose to drop in on someone and you don't turn up, you are now a thief and you're stealing what that person has earned. I've watched pro's steal waves and not turn up because they're butt hurt someone half their talent out smarted them out paddle them and out positioned them, not to mention they truly believe that they own the ocean but can't produce a title or pink slip on said ownership... Whoever has the right of way - they own that wave so don't steal it from them. Just like a person owns their wallet and the 40 bucks in there. Steeling a persons wave is like walking in someone's house while they're taking an afternoon nap and taking 40 bucks so YOU can go and buy a nice lunch. So now that we cleared the air on the proper etiquette, the question is are you a person who steals and is known as a thief?? Again thieves come in many forms, at Malibu there are thousands of thieves at Trestles, you rarely see the evil thieves there. Now thee other question is did your parents teach you about Karma?? Karma is the vicious non stop stealing circle circus you see every single day at Malibu. Peace

Up in L.A. County there are just so many posers and tourists that you often don't want to let them have their priority, since they'll probably choke and miss the wave or wipe out on the first turn. And maybe those guys that DO know how to ride well will drop in on everyone else thinking that THEY are the kook, and were probably going to wipe out...
