Great video! I recently bought an infra red camera. Looking forward to some unusual footage. Like you say it's very disorientating in the dark!

At the Surf Day show(Brookedalle College, NJ) when I purchased my first bale-less reel, The salesman showed me lift the rod to 1-2 o'clock & the line falls back to the rod , index finger grab & wind the reel. works like a charm. practice this & the lure change in day-lite , then in day-lite with your eyes closed untill it becomes second nature. The same proves true for scuba diving equipment in potential dark environments.

I got a question, I like to fish for blues fish and stripers what lure would do better at night top water like pencil poppers, bottle neck poppers etc or bucktails, swim shad and lures that work the bottom also what colors do well. Thanx in advance.

traditional topwater plugs are for the daytime / dusk and dawn. spooks, pencials, poppers, etc. if you are on the surface at night you generally want something more subtle. metal lips are a plug that can be fished on topwater at night but they are a niche plug and they are only used for certain situations because they don't cast well and they are very big. like antying else, it will depend on where you fish, the depth, the bait they're on, current, fish size, etc. lots of guys fish daters and needles at night and crush. i fish mostly sp minnows and soft plastics and i crush. if there are colors at night they are white / bone / chartreuse, and black / purple. i fish bone 90% of the time. fish really don't see colors at night unless there's a ton of moonlight and hte water is clear. they see shapes and those shapes are different shades. when it is very dark you will ahve an easier time seeing your black plug. when there is some light from the moon and stars you will be able to see a bone plug easier. fish aren't much different. they're seen the shape better in low light when it's a dark shape, and better in some moonlight when it is a light shape. bone until it's pitch black, then move to darker colors. all of that said, there were no stars and moon last night and the only fish i caught was on a pearl / white sluggo.

What about using a head lamp if it is really so dark?
@caperjim

Aim it down. Never in the water. It should be only be turned on if you need to bait a hook or get untangled. Turn your back to the water also.

Aside from the fact everyone around you is going to be extremely displeased, putting on a light is going to screw up your night vision for a long while afterwards.

I’ve put a red light on my headlamp, for my night-vision and to not scare the fish., also turn your back to the water.
