No nonsense no hype..just good angling advice..from clearly an accomplished angler. Learning how a beach works when the surfs up is essential. Great stuff.
Hi Tech fishing. Skinner is knowledgeable and patient. You don't need a big expensive boat to catch fish, just need to spend a little time to understand how fish feed. Very good vids.
great vid, you got more fish in it than i did in the past 3 months. wish i coulda fished LI for the fall run. here in NJ there wasnt even a run, just a slow pick here and there. there hasn't been one consistent body of fish along the entire coastline all season. i'd be happy to run into schoolies or even blues let alone sizeable bass. hoping the spring wont suck as much. glad you got good action, thanks for the video.
I agree. when a noreast'er approach the NYC. I head to beach of Coney Island. although the Official's dont want any one on the beach. i found that it can be very productive for: blues, stripers, and fluke. i been chunking most of this year and the last. I will from here. do my Surf Casting Thanks John
His videos are so informative that it doesn't matter about the lens field of view. I could actually close my eyes and still get all the information I need form his narrations.
What type of rod would you guys choose for SURF. BLUES AND STRIPERS?ALSO 20lb or 30 lb PowerPro braid? What type of mono 50 lb no steel leaders? I’ll be using plugs -buck tails 2oz for heavy surf. How about calm surf 1oz? Please help I’m new at surf fishing....I was looking at MOJO ST CROIX.... should I go with 10 ft? Med fast action?
John, when you are tossing such weighted bucktail (2oz) in a wind of 30mph plus. Is the wind blowing onto the beach or against? i am facing with the dilemma that with northeast or east wind howling at 30mph (here in New jersey) it would be quite difficult to toss even a 2ouncer against such wind no? On your video I do see lots of fishy white water all around but curious to know pratically on ALL of your fishing videos wind and tide conditions you are fishing in. BTW I know you had mentioned it on several vids
Good video.Your videos are very helpful. They are very informative and keep me watching.I have to mention this if there is one thing I can't stand it's guys who which you mentioned were sitting in there truck not fishing.Once they seen you catching fish they proceed come down the beach and crowd you on both sides. They have an entire beach to find fish but decide to come right next to you.
Hey John. When using bucktails in those conditions what would your preference be for rod length and action? I've tried this with a 10ft stick but couldn't get past the furthest breakers.
Good fishermen see fish or feeding activity and go catch fish. Expert fishermen, read water, examine conditions, make predictions, choose likely water and holds and catch even more fish and with no one else around because the other guys are still driving or walking the shore looking for a blitz...
Great video. I am heading out in conditions like this tonight. I have never had any luck with buck tails in 30 years of fishing - not a fish. But I think I've been doing it wrong, bouncing on the bottom too much. Great stuff. I will look for your book.
John, can I use the bucktail without the pork rind? Just the bucktail itself with naked hook. Will that work at all? If not, are there any alternatives? Such as a piece of frozen fish from a local grocery store, or some sort of meat? Also, how do I attach the pork rind to the bucktail? Just hook it on? Is there a certain "technique" to it? I would like to see a video where you set up your rig. How you tie your knots, how you attach the bucktai to the line, etc.
The first time I caught a striped bass on a bucktail I was holding the pole under my armpit with the bucktail dangling in the water near my feet on the rock keep in mind I was not fishing yet . Then I felt my pole trying to drop from my armpit . looking down near my feet it was a Bass inhale my bucktail . That was the only bass I ever caught on a bucktail . I can't say I caught it more like it caught it self . I have been trying for so long not even a hit . just have to keep on trying till I get it .
John, you ever get that issue where the pork runs clumps up on the hook if you jerk the rod tip too much? I know sometimes it's unavoidable but do you hook into the pork rind closer to the middle? I'm hooking directly on the edge. Thoughts?
Don't understand the thumbs down, he is catching with his set up with his own advice. No hype or funky music along with the ridiculous fishing fashion you see on a lot of these other fishing channels.
I was thinking about getting this Rod with 1 foot off the butt. What do you think it's lure rating would be with 1 foot off the butt. By the way I'm the kid who gave you the 2 1/2 oz wine red bucktail.
+Daniel C Surfcasting Hi Daniel! The rod in this video is an 11-footer, it's not the one that I cut down. My 9-footer that I use in most of my bass videos is cut from a 10-foot blank. The sweet spot for that rod is two ounces, but it is great i the 1-3-ounce range. I also fish rigged eels with it, and I bet they weigh a little more than 3 ounces. Thanks for the bucktail!
+John Skinner Fishing I know it not your LamiGlass 120 1L with 1 foot off the butt I have that Rod. I was wondering about the 132 1M used in this video do you think one foot off the butt would change it a lot? I'm looking for a Rod that can handle lures from 2-4 well. So I was thinking the GSB 132 1M with 1 foot off. Do you think it would be good for that?
Hey John, i noticed you like spiderwire braid, why do you chose it over other braided lines? Do you ever get any wind knots when fishing very windy conditions?
Hi John, I own both of your books and am amazed by the amount of information i have learned just buy reading 2 books and subscribing to you! I was wondering if you could make a video on tying bucktails since you talk about it in your book (Fishing The Bucktail). Many Thanks, Sam D.
Another good vid - thanks for posting. I always caught good bass in calm water situations and off boats near or after full moons. This is news as I never thought about fishing lures in rough or off colour water.
he crimped his barb, definitely a catch and release man. he drove 15 miles to another spot, that Striper fever is real. I watch these videos over and over. I will be getting his book soon.
please give a general description of where youre fishing. i just got back from Montauk and it was horrible and went to robert moses. it would be nice to know where some of your favorite areas are
+gfrost6 I had some luck about halfway between Gilgo beach and cedar beach . But the fish will start their southern migration pretty soon as the water temp drops better get on em.
Can I ask you a question ? When you are reeling in the buck-tail do you wait for the fish to grab & go ? Or do you set the hook on the lite bait ? Because alot of times I could be getting hits but not getting the train smack hits ? Do you have any feed back ?
Hello John. I recently tried bucktailing in conditions very similar to this. I had a very hard time feeling contact with the bucktail. I also would have huge bows in my line from the crosswind. I could not tell where the bucktail was in the water column. Any suggestions on what I was doing wrong and how to correct it would be highly appreciated. Thank you.
Something that I have always wondered about your videos is.. Obviously when we edit videos, we try to just show catching fish or something informative and we usually skip showing all of the useless casts in between but what I am wondering is.. How often were you actually hooking up to fish in this video? Which kind of leads me to my main question, If I am fishing a spot that meets all of the criteria to make it a "good" spot for bass, and I start fishing it and dont immediately get fish, how much time would you think is reasonable to spend in a spot before moving to another spot?
This video I stepped out of the truck and had one on the first cast, then about a dozen in total for the 90 minutes going into dusk. I'll put 30 minutes into a spot I have confidence in, but will make a small move of a few yards if I go 2 or three casts without a hit in a setting like this.
another excellent vid! Id be tempted to throw a Danny style plug in this water, as they really seem to be deadly in the white water, imitating that dazed/disoriented bunker. agreed?
John Skinner Fishing Yeah, cameras lie. we all know that. Im going to try bucktailing up here north of cape cod this season. if it were me in the vid, i would have wasted some time on a Danny, got frustrated, tied on my favorite whit sluggo and ...who knows?
Hello John. I am a newer follower and I just realize this video seven years old. Do you remember where and when you finished? There’s just so many variables and I am wanting to get in the surf fishing because I don’t do so well on boats after a couple of hours. Thanks
Hey John, i noticed you like spiderwire braid, why do you chose it over other braided lines? Do you ever get any wind knots when fishing very windy conditions?
Do the techniques of the North also work in the South? For example, Im in East Central Florida, and when I went to a bait & tackle shop and asked for Pork Rinds, they looked at me like I was absolutely crazy. I guess I can use FishBites, right?
+Rob Kamen Hi Rob, that seems a little far south for stripers (Ormond through Vero?) but the techniques for flounder in the surf should work for you. Try tipping your jigs with 4" Gulp Swimming Mullet--you may start a revolution!
hey john I love your videos and have a cpl questions for you if you don't mind. I tried the uncles Josh's pork grind without luck but it was the red and white ( they didn't have all white). do you think the color matters that much? also there was a cpl other guys on the jetty with me using the new 6.5 inch gulp nemesis in the chartuse color. they hooked up jigging that and it seemed like a good set up and I'm going to try it this weekend. have you tried that yet and what do you think it so.
