This awesome surf bite occurred in April '22. Multiple 40 pounders were landed. Orson picked a couple of those himself. I showed up late to pick up the scraps.
Luckily there was a decent one still hanging around for me. After landing that, I pulled out the fly rod because the fish were in close.
When EJ caught, it meant fish were close and biting, so I'd feel confident that I was going to hook up, and I did regularly. Once EJ left, I had to fend for myself. I realized that most of the hits were occurring shortly after mending over the whitewater of larger waves. Instead of waiting until after sets to cast, I would cast before them and then mend effectively. I caught at least a half-dozen slot stripers while implementing this approach.
