How to tie leash lines to prevent a common form of surf leash failure.
Tying a leash string to a board seems simple but we show you the best way to attach it to your board to keep your leash secure.
Leash plugs can have sharp edges that cause your leash string to fray. The string should be replaced if there is visible damage. The best way is to make a tip and thread both sides of the leash loop under the leash plug, then thread the loop under the knot so the leash knot gets pulled down into the plug. That way the knot is not in the way when attaching the leash and does not weaken the closure on the rail saver.
At Blue Planet we like to use 600 lbs test strength spectra line, a very strong, abrasion resistant and thin line that is very effective. Make sure to leave over ½ inch of line past the knot and make sure to fully tighten the knot before going in the water to keep the line from slipping. Blue
Planet boards come with two leash plugs which spread out the load when the board gets pulled by a powerful wave. I personally use a second backup line. Make sure the leash line is not too long as it can pull through the rail of the board. The line should be the right length that the nylon/ velcro rail saver protects the rail of the board.

Thanks for the tips. Had my leash fail today in 20ft waves with double swell far out. I thought I was screwed. Remained calm and took about 25min for me to get back in..scary.

Robert, any reason you guys are using the oval plugs with the potential for sharp corners instead of the round plugs? Looping the line through both plugs means there's going to be some rubbing on that sharper corner. What if the plugs were rotated 30 degrees or so (left one CCW, right one CW) so the loading would be perpendicular to the brass bar? Good question for the crew on standupzone.

Good points. Regardless of the shape of the opening, a sharp edge will cause the line to chafe. I keep asking the workers to round the plug edges more to avoid the issue. I’ll look at the angle of the plugs as well. If your lines wear quickly, try to round the edge at the opening between the fiberglass and plug.

What is your experience using a zip tie for leash (I also use it to attach a bow line to my SUP)?
@blueplanetsurf

A zip tie is not strong enough for waves, I highly recommend using a string that’s stronger than the leash itself.

No one on RU-vid has covered how to attach the dakine peahi leash! What do you do if there is no Velcro on the rail saver end?
@blueplanetsurf

loop it directly through the leash plug

I’m not 100% sure but I think the Peahi leash has a sleeve over the Velcro that you can slide back to undo the rail saver.

Yes, we have ‘em at the shop. Short for single leash plug and long for double leash plugs, we have a few different color choices available.

Quick fix: shoe lace, floss or fishing line if you don’t want to leave beach for store?

All of these are weak substitutes, make sure the leash string is not the weakest link.
