I had an old nikon 600 f4 now that is a beast weighed the same of my first car. I sold it a couple of years ago bought the Nikon 100-500 5.6 absolutely love it light flexible acceptably sharp and relatively cheap second hand. We have 300 2.8 and 500 f4 at work love fixed focal lengths to bits.

Another outstanding episode Ralph chock full of great advise and imagery. Love surf photography. I tried surfing once on a long board actually stood up for about 5 seconds got that unique historic moment on camera posted it online proud as all hell my mate in old blighty replied gonna need a bigger board chubs 🙁 Ill stick to shooting the athletes 📷

Great video Ralph! Those waves were absolutely perfect! I haven't seen waves that perfectly formed since my days in California and Hawaii. the only time we get surf like that is the day after the hurricane and the wind shifts to offshore. Beautiful, epic images throughout this video. Really enjoyed it! Hope you are doing well, have a great week!

Great video Ralph, I did a little bit of surf photography in Tenerife whilst on holiday - it really is a great sport to photograph even if the waves weren't anywhere near as bit it was still fun to watch and snap. We have brave guys and girls up here who take to the North Sea to surf. As for shutter priority, I use that so much for auto racing photography - it's so much easier to switch from a freeze frame to a slow shutter speed panning shot by using a thumbwheel on the back of the camera than messing around with menus.

@@RalphMayhewPhotography If they have any Drifting near to where you are that is great for photography, plenty of tyre smoke, colourful cars and fairly low speeds. Other than that I've shot less glamourous stuff like auto testing (what the Yanks call gymkhana) and stock car racing. Drag racing is also good as burnouts are always good for pics and if you can get close to the line seeing the cars pick up the front wheels makes for a good image too. Even if you get bored with the cars then some of the owners make for good portrait shots particularly with the classic cars stuff, you get some real eccentrics.

Great video, I have a Canon 100-400 zoom and shoot at about 1/2000 sec to reduce any shake when hand holding it. Question do you use a polarising filter much?

Since making this video I do now. Not heaps with surf shots but once the sun gets up and you get that horrible silver sun reflection then I’d recommend it.

Do you have any tips for a landscape surf shot that you showed above? Specifically what setting do you use for a landscape surf shot? I have a tamron 150-600mm G2.

That’s a terrific lens and the one I use. If you want to shoot a landscape that features great surf, you’ll need to expose for how you want the surf to appear in the shot. Because everything else should be static in the shot then capturing the motion of waves is the highest priority. Usually this means a high shutter speed, which will capture any colour in the sky quite well as it is easy to be a little under exposed. Does that help?

do you recon the intro canon 75-300mm has enough range to get close enough?

potentially yes. It depends how far the break is from the shoreline. It's worth starting with though, before you drop $1k on a longer telephoto lens.

Btw the size of the wave is measured by the back of the wave as default, if you are referring to the front of the wave call it the face of the wave. Face is a lot bigger than the back
