How strange is it that Sony Animation’s first movie has a deer pooping in the woods and then their second animated movie is one of the most under appreciated animated movies of the 2000s.
Happenstance, the same reason that Cree Summer's biggest role was her first, (which wasn't even her true race, and, wound up losing when production moved to America, despite, being American).
It's like DreamWorks where it's first movie was a copy to the Bug's Life movie and their second one which was the Prince of Egypt and it was a literal perfect movie. No joke
The first movie: A unique and underrated mockumentary with some clever jokes and likable characters. The sequel: Random wrestler characters, and a seal drinking a fish's penis.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how all the voice actors actually recorded all of the dialogue in the same room to make the dialogue exchanges between them feel more genuine
This is one of the most unique and greatest animated films of all time. I love the mockumentary format, Cody's character journey is great, and Chicken Joe is one of the funniest characters in existence.
I love the fact that he didn’t even show a clip of the wwe “sequel” commercial. No but deadass this is definitely an underrated gem easily something that deserves more attention.
This is definitely a good movie. Love the mockumentary style they went with for this movie. The voice acting is on top, and has a pretty cool story, even people who aren’t surfers can enjoy. Also, Chicken Joe is the G.O.A.T.
This movie has always been one of my favourites. It's just so humble and laid-back yet so unique and clever. I love the animation, the characters, the story, the message, the soundtrack, the jokes, the setting and how beautiful it works as a mockumentary. Even this review was as wholesome as the movie your talking about. I actually felt so relaxed. As Big Z said "This is what it's all about. What could be better than this?"
I agree with you. Surf’s Up is very underrated, and I love it to death. I had a few happy meal toys, and even the video game. I just wish that a lot of people remembered it more and it got the love it deserves
This movie for me always make me smile when I watch it. I honestly wish I grew up with this so I can rewatch it over and over again instead of Open Season like I did with my brother
I managed to try surfing for the first time a few years back in Bali, Indonesia… I took to it like a penguin to water 😂 It’s the only sport besides swimming that I’ve ever been naturally good at, and it kills me that I live nowhere near the ocean, because I think I could be really good at it. Plus it’s just so damned fun! #unrealiseddreams I love that you’ve done a spotlight on this film. I watched it on a plane in 2009, and really enjoyed it. I love the humour, the characters , and the way it’s made like a documentary. So underrated!
Absolute childhood right here. I remember when I was a kid I didn't know it had a title (I didn't even know it was a movie back then) so I kept trying to look at the Disney channel (or was it Cartoon Nnetwork?) if it would replay it again. Years passed and I thought it was a fever dream or some weird prequel to happy feet that I had forgotten. It wasn't until my late elementary to early junior high school years that I found it again and boy it all came flowing back and here I am years later seeing this video as a college student. A great underrated gem indeed.

The Brazilian dub of Surf's Up is kinda popular over here because of the translation, specially some jokes, that used artistic freedom at its best, if you know what I mean

I absolutely loved this movie as a kid (I had a huge penguin phase.) the soundtrack is definitely one of my favorites from any movie and I still play some tracks to this very day. Just good vibes all around.
Absolutely loved this movie as a kid. Not only did my sister and I have the film, we also had the game, soundtrack, and my sister even had a Cody Build-a-Bear with the surf board and voice box. Yeah, we were obsessed as kids, and I personally still have a soft spot for it

Dude this movie was MY SHIT when i was a kid. I've always loved just how chill and easy going it overall is, which tbh i'm surprised that not many other animated movies have even tried to go for that overall feel, especially how thanks to Spiderverse every other movie wants to have such an erratic and breakneck speed pace and eye flashing visuals and a million random jokes shoved in your face per minute and im like, you know what? Sometimes just going with the flow and vibing with the homies is just enough to have a good time and this movie does exactly that and im forever thankful for growing up with it.
Dude, Surfs Up is an amazing movie! I love the unique documentary-ish style it has, and I love the cast, especially Napolean Dynamite as Joe! That's perfect casting :D
This movie made my childhood. It's SOOOOOO GOOD AND SOOOOOO UNDERATED!!! It combined two of my favorite things as a kid, Surfing & Penguins. I still have the DVD copy, I still remember the songs used in the film and continue to listen them till this day, and I remember playing the game it was so much fun to play. Everytime I watched the movie I felt like going to the beach and lucky for me I live in Hawai'i so I could & I did. And Yes I did learn how to Surf for some time, but never got back into after I moved to another Island. But I still have some urges to learn, being surrounded by water & seeing people surf all the time. At the very least I can body surf & body board lol. And yes I'm all to familar with peeing on a Jellyfish Sting or Urchin Needles. My opinion on it is different because I grew up with it. All in all good vid, great movie! 👍🌺🤙🏼
My favorite soundtrack of this movie has to be "Legends". It's such a beautiful powerful soundtrack it has been stuck with me since when I was younger. Sony may have some movies that were weak back then, but I'm still glad they at least made great films like: cloudy with a chance of meatballs movies Arthur Christmas Hotel Transylvania trilogy Spider-verse movies Pirates band of misfits Mitchells vs the machines Vivo Wish dragon I'm glad Sony is changing to be more creative with their films and let's hope they keep it up. Annnnd let's hope the artists get treated better next time and not rush them with poor treatment...but HEY LET" S HOPE THE THIRD SPIDER VERSE MOVIE TURNS OUT AS GOOD AS THE TWO MOVIES HAHAHAhhahahaha... yeah no I can't make jokes like this, I don't even know what to comment here.
This movie did feel like a hidden gem for me and my brother, we like to joke about one part (the reveal) but it just felt like a movie we only had our hands on And actually I never connected cars and this movie to have a similar plot, but all these years it finally clicked in my mind 😅. But I’m glad to see more people enjoy this one too
I love this movie, the memes and fun moments make up for a story I could predict before it even played out. I really enjoyed it. I love movies that make a movie in a movie.
I forgot about this movie until recently and I forgot how much I love it. I remember watching it all the time with my dad as a kid and finding all the jokes funny, heck I still quote the trophy scene and the pee scene to this day. Now as an adult I find it very relatable with his journey of self discovery as I'm going through a similar thing in college and I'm tempted to rent it and watch it.
You know, knowing what Adele Penguins do to just about anything in existence in real life (including the literal ground itself), it’s not 100% unreasonable that Tank would want to do *that* to his trophies…😖
After finally seeing the movie myself, I can safely say it's a great ride on the waves. The documentary vibe was a unique element and the laid-back dialogue gave this film a lot of personality. Not to mention the animation holds up very well, especially regarding the water and lighting. It just makes me want to go the beach again, with or without surfing.
I definitely have WAY more hope for Sony Animation as a company than I EVER will for Illumination. Also, I was so surprised by how FUNNY this movie was! Like, that scene with Cody, his brother and his mom had me rolling ☠️

I remember when i was a little girl, my older sisters talked about this movie, but i never got into it, especially after seeing Happy feet and brushing Surf's up off as a ripoff... until now
I watched this movie when I was a kid and while it wasn't bad, it was kinda boring to me but I do remember laughing at some scenes like the chicken joe and the native scene.
6:20 The main character gives up his victory to help another competitor. Oh and (this is not exactly a similarity) they were both released on the second Friday in June. Almost a year apart from one another.

NOPE. The Surf's Up sequel is way worse than Cars 2. Cars 2 remembered things that happened in the first film. While the so called 'sequel' of Surf's up completely erases the first movie from existence.
@@chilathecreativefox9098 He was abusive towards women (especially his own ex), made a racist remark to a police officer, went on drunk tirades that got him arrested and is overall not that good of an actor, save for the stuff I mentioned above and this movie. He was just insufferable to watch in the 3 Transformers films and was extremely rude during filming of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
First world Mitchells vs machines was a bad movie the only good thing was the animation but that's more of an f the only good thing was the villain but pretty much that's a given compared to Sony's ever villains and just I mean I thought the robot designs were bland
