Growing up and surfing in Central FL my whole life where overhead sets are few and far between, this conversation hits the nail on the head. I a favor my front foot 90% of the time in our conditions to generate speed and reduce drag of my tail so I need more foam up from center. However that translates to TOO much speed in larger waves so I find where I can compensate is by riding something with a little more nose rocker and less foam under my front foot and low exit rocker with larger fins to try to keep the fins engaged. To me the extra nose rocker and loss of foam under my front foot helps to slow me down and stay in the pocket with the extra weight of my foot upfront causing the board to plow a little more as opposed to cutting across the water. Otherwise to keep my daily driver in larger waves I find myself flying down lines and usually losing control or having to compensate by drawing out my turns super wide just to have the board change direction.

This was major for me. I could never figure out why I had such a hard time getting in the flow on low rocker/wide tail small wave/grovelers that are marketed as “beginner friendly”. Being right footed and riding goofy, the pyzel ghost & phantom were 2 of my favorites which matches exactly what you’re saying.

Noel Great video and points made! I am right handed, goofy footed surfer. When I started surfing consistently again after 20yrs it was starting over again. Even the bad habits from when I was a teenager. Surfed consistently, started on a 7'6 NSP fun board, then a 6'8 bully #chronicsurfboard, and finally a 6'4 squash tail #chronicsurfboard. The 6'4 became my go to in any size that I was able to handle. I tried 5'10 fish and that was awesome too. One thing I found was I kept catching rail on cut backs. I practiced my technique and it got better. Still catching rail. I started surfskating on a carver and oh boy did it show me right away I was heavy on the front foot!!! Once that was corrected I started noticing board construction and dimensions more. The chronic shaper actually shaped my boards with more volume in the front where my front foor goes. Once I found that out, with practice, technique refining, I was doing full cut backs with out catching rail at all in any size of board.

It would be cool for Noel to break down some footage of different foot orientation surfers that are all high level surfers. To me it sounds that front foot surfers are basically beginners who don't know how to use the rail for speed. But Noel is saying that there are front footed surfers at the pro level. It would be cool to see him break down those differences in technique

I'm watching Mason and Coco's Electric Acid surfboard test and they kind answered the question for me. They were testing the ALBUM SURF Plasmic model, which Coco loved and Mason struggled with. He said he kept putting too much weight on his front foot and the board's tail just lifted and lost drive. But it he put the weight back it responded well. Asher Pacey surfs so hard off his back foot and Mason I can see drives a lot off the front foot. Of course they both rip, but I can see the difference now. They provide a pretty clear example. At the end Coco made a simple comment, it's suited for a back footed surfer.

@chopsnz88
@chopsnz88 2 года назад
@@albinochewie543 no its the plan outline shape. I.e From the tail to the midpoint or the midpoint forward to the nose is it more curved outline. Think high performance shortboard. Or more straighter rails that gently curve to the nose have more foam and so a generally a more fuller outline. Great paddling but harder to turn as more foam forward of front foot can bog in turns or not fit the shape of a wave. Think Retro Fish shape.

Awesome video as always. Lots of insight and I appreciate you bringing up the point that things that are common knowledge to shapers are not for the average guy. On another note, I think boards built for back footed surfers can help front footed surfers and vice versa. Sliding out mid turn just tells you where your weight needs to be for a certain board. I think different boards can help you round out your surfing as a whole. I used to be more of a front footed guy myself but have transitioned to neutral from Firewires No Brainer. Once I figured out that board it was cake. I am way more aware of back foot placement because the board forced me that way in a sense. Love the content and keep up the good work!

Yeah i was trying figure out how a board with curved outline, pronounced rocker and narrow tail rides differently than a board that has a more straight rail outline and flatter rocker with a wide tail but extreme vee out the back. Would think more pronounced rocker allows for easier turning but then wouldn't the vee help the wide tail board with turning too. And wouldn't the vee with wide tail be better because it has more drive while being able to still do turns. What are the disadvantage of that design? Maybe the board with less rocker will have issues in more steep almond shaped waves and the heavy rockered board would out perform it in those conditions even if the wider straight outline board had a lot of vee.
@chopsnz88
@chopsnz88 2 года назад
My understanding is the vee allows to go tip from rail to rail easier. The rocker is helpful in maneuverability and arc or radius with the turns, however higher rocker boards must be surfed on rail otherwise they decelerate if you surf flat. The differences in the 2 designs you are mentioning are really how they are designed for different conditions, hollow powerful waves have more rocker for maneuverability and narrower tail block for more hold. Wider flatter tail block with vee and lower rocker is useful in a grovel board for generating speed in weaker 1-3ft conditions while still allowing you to surf on rail.

What are the definite signs or traits of a balanced stance, front foot or back foot surfer?
@John-ed5qb
@John-ed5qb 2 года назад
you're right-handed at everything, for example, kicking a ball, and surfing you're goofy. The probability of driving the board with your front foot is very high ;) but the best thing is to show a video of you surfing to your shaper, if you don't have videos, filming yourself on a surfskate also helps to understand.
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 2 года назад
Get some video of yourself surfing or riding your surf skate and it will be easier to see where you favor driving the surfboard for speed. On a surf skate I find it easier to identify when you get going fast and hit a turn…. If the tail slides out a bit and you don’t want it too then your weight is forward and you are driving the Surfskate more from your front foot.

@@surfnshowreviews7777 maybe a dumb question but would it be possible to be a front footed surfer forehand but a back footed surfer backhand? Or vice versa?? Thanks Noel another great vid 🤙
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 2 года назад
@@mufflaps That’s a great question. I think it’s easier to be more back footed on your backside. We sit down more backside to get the board to the board on rail due to body position. I find it a lot easier for me to drive through bottom turns backside as I sit down and surf the board off the tail compared to frontside.
@jonnyzuma6884
@jonnyzuma6884 3 месяца назад
Surfboards are meant to be controlled and turned predominantly from the tail. That’s where the fins are, and the fins provide slip resistance, and control. You can lean on the center of the board and turn, but it will not have as dramatic of an effect as if you lean on the tail. Riding in the center or wide point of the board will provide speed because it’s usually the flattest in terms of rocker, and will trim better, and cause less drag. To effectively surf to the full potential of a board, you have to be able to shift your weight freely, from center to rear and back again, when situation requires. Often, when someone has a weight shifting problem, it’s best to grab a longboard to exaggerate the effect, and learn to shift and trim, then go back to the short board. I believe that most surfers who are a “back footed” or “front footed” surfer, have not completely grasped the concept of shifting and movement, and have probably developed bad habits from the start, and their whole style is created to compensate for that inability. It’s also very possible that most front footed surfers learned to surf a certain stance, when they really should have learned to pop up switch, with their dominant foot at the tail. It’s like shooting a rifle from your right shoulder, when you’re actually left eye dominant.

I have both the NB2 and RocketWide. Both Spinetek and both 5'9. But not sure if I favour the front foot or back foot. Would these two boards be a good comparison between foam more forward with a narrower tail and foam further back with a wider tail? I like both boards. Prefer the RW mainly because it paddles better and gets in easier and ridden with both AM2 fins (bigger days) and AMT for small days. The NB2 I have ridden only with AM2 and cannot easily drift that tail. Surfed it in bigger and smaller waves. Prefer it in bigger waves as I find that tail pivot point for the tail is great and the board hold super well. Almost tight for me. Still can't figure out which foot I prefer. Maybe a video is my only option.
@surfnshowreviews7777
@surfnshowreviews7777 2 года назад
Sounds to me that you favor your back foot if your surfing the NB2 and it feels tight and hard to drift the tail in bigger waves. I suggest a video too but the NB2 is cam be a bit harder to control in bigger surf for heavily front footed surfers
