My dudes...your videos are few and far between, that over 11 minutes of video makes me feel like a cheap date. Like you wake up in the morning to find all of us in your bed, and the first thing you say to us is, “The Hell?! You still here?!” The total amount of absentee time between each of your videos and the time you allot us, when you do show up, is literally the amount of time newly wedded Hollywood celebrities get divorced. Literally after 11 minutes. Give us at least 15-20 minutes. Before, what seems like court appointed time to visit. That surface grinder seems like it was in Val Kilmer’s, ‘Red Planet’ movie. Looks like one of the NASA equipments on the ISS. Looks like something funded by Space X. I thought of all the production that went into making the style of this video, the end would fade to black and the words, “GOT MILK” would appear. No, just kidding. Thought you guys needed a little razzing, with all the time and effort that went into making this surface grinder. One should take the time to truly laugh, at least once a day. It looks awesome! Congrats guys, on the finished product. You both deserve it. Thanks for the videos.

Would have been nice to actually get to see it grind in real time with sound without any fancy camera work, music overlay or post effects. Also would have liked to see a 5 block test and the results.

Going back even farther, you needed a surface grinder to straighten the ways of the lathe that you used to build the first surface grinder so now what?

That is sweet. "BUTT"' A surface grinder has way more uses than just flat surface grinding. You need the Y and Z axis with a back parallel on the Chuck to grind slides n gibs. Like form dress the wheel with a diamond to side and flat grind.

Now, find a solid piece of metal or rock and mount it. The video shows the machine moving around too much. Regardless, this is a fantastic job. Well done!

Why not make a wire driven table? It's very simple, cheap and good enough (maybe even smoother than rack/pinion) for a surface grinder X-axis.

4:25 Lol, do you really expect the slide to run true after bolting the guide rail to a surface that is half ground by hand with an angle grinder, half still painted? That will be a pretty bumpy ride. Where I work the mounting surfaces for guide rails get scraped flat to a tolerance of less than a thou over several meters. Never think your rails will always stay straight no matter what, they will comply to the mounting surface. Also don't trust bar stock to be straight, it most definitely is not.

That would be great for a cross purpose grinding machine. Make the grinding head easily removable and add a 2"x72" belt sander head. Knife makers are probably the largest group doing these conversions to conventional surface grinders. Accuracy of course suffers a bit but stock removal is dozens of times faster and great surface finishes are achievable. You'd be amazed at the number of people doing this. Check out 2x72 surface grinder conversions, you make like what you find. Done right you could convert it back in forth in 30 minutes or less. Great job on the machine!

Stunning wideo and great job. I just wondering 2 things. 1- what program you use to move the cnc table. 2- what was that beam you use for calibrate the grinding stone.

Halo guys, i think chatter problem come from small motor and low speed, for this size of wheel you need at least 2 HP motor and 3.000 RPM, for 250mm wheel need 3 HP motor, also other problem in chatter come from unstable motion from step motor.

Well done on completing the surface grinder but did you really need to blow out my fucking eardrums with the music in between the talking segments. Some of us have to use headphones you know. Read up on level balancing will ya!!!

I think you would do a lot better with the chatter with a larger motor. Not just for power but also mass. And even use a flywheel to stop harmonics and smooth out chatter and bogging. Maybe even direct drive but I would think a lot more weight directly on the spindle will keep things more solid and smooth surface finish.

Nice!!! I like the bit at the end about learning new skills. That's how I go into most of my projects. What I think I'm building to start with normally ends up looking very different by the end, mainly because I have no idea what I'm doing and learn while I'm making. I have learnt so much in my life using that approach....... things do take longer that way and quite often the project doesn't move forwards for long periods of time until I work out how to overcome the next problem. Fun times 🤔😊

oh... i was hoping to get some more informations about the wiring of the motor. I could use that for my projekt. Maybe some one can help me out? I dont know if i can run this with a power supplie or do i need a battery pack... So much more questions

An old machinist told me that you should never wrap abrasive more than 1/3 the diameter of a part on the lathe. Just a thought, Mr. Fox.

не хочу быть пессимистом, работы проделано много, а по итогу "шифер". Шлифовка на сухую это вредно для здоровья. При таких габаритах подач зачем было делать консоль сделали-б аркой, жесткости б явно добавило.

Nice grinder! I enjoyed watching your videos. And your learning curve. Looks like you pulled off making something that can be used pretty well as a surface grinder. One thought that would lead to some serious improvement. Make a suitable sturdy base for it so that it stops rockin and rollin! Your surface finish will thank you.

When you ground the magnetic hold down table, it didn't spark. I was told a long time ago that if what you were grinding didn't spark you should not grind it as the grinding wheel will load up and could possibly explode (shatter at speed). Just asking. And you did very fine work on the grinder, thanks for sharing your work.

Just watched whole series, and i probably missed something. What size of rails did you guys used? I am just starting to gather materials to build small surface grinder(manual, not CNC). Your video series is a great inspiration. I am planning to get around 10x5 work area since this is more than enough for my use. I already welded solid frame from thick C beams that will probably be overkill stiffness wise for such small machine, but its always better this way than the other. If you could tell me the size of linear rails you used that would be great, and save me a lot of thinking and calculations. Thanks!

You're going to have to be very gentle with your cuts without flood coolant. That problem with any Grinding is the heat generated locally creates positive feedback. By that, I mean that if you take a reasonable cut, the heat you put into the work causes it to expand towards the wheel, meaning on the next pass you will take a deeper cut and so on. If there's enough mass, and you're gentle, you'll likely get away with it on a Surface Grinder. Don't try it on a Circular Grinder between centres though, it will surely end in tears because the effect is magnified so much more.

Knowing absolutely nothing about these things (but hey, this is youtube), I still think you should have cast the support structures into concrete/epoxy, but I guess you could still do that if the balancing of the wheel isn't sufficient to get rid of any oscillation/chatter/vibration.

Finally soma updates! Good series, see you in s03. Some remarks: - Is it a thousand indicator? I guess. - you need soma more rigid tabble, it is waggleing when working. - "If you want to learn new things.... " is it original or coming from somewhere?

Very nice. But for the sake of all that is good and decent please build a solid stand for it rather than the $50 harbor freight roller box. When you are measuring tenths it doesn’t matter how strong you built the machine if the base is rocking and rolling and flexing and heaving.
