iPad pro will never replace a laptop. You always need to carry around a Laptop if you buy an iPad Pro. Surface Pro/ Go is great for students, medical professionals, college students, etc. Anyway the main use for those demographics will be media consumption, a fair bit of web browsing, social media, Note taking mostly, maybe light video editing and emails. Surface Go and Pro are very much capable of doing much more than an iPad which is a large iPhone.

I have a MacBook and an iPad for uni and the combination is perfect. I use OneNote in iPad as a digital notebook and it has replaced 50% of my in class note taking and completely changed the game for me as a student. I don’t see the surface doing as good for me as my current setup.

You know the newest iPadOS gives some of these functionality to iPad. The only thing is you have to remember the exact keystroke to accomplish these task. Three fingers pinch etc. It isn’t intuitive. These features are easily accomplish in any regular desktop operating system. MacOS, Linux or Windows. Right click on mouse and click on the drop down menu.

I love my Surface Pro 6. I work full time and study part-time. My 1.5 hour commute each morning to work is where I do most of my study and having this has been so convenient. Turn it into a tablet for reading and then back to a laptop for writing my assignments. Same size as my notepads so they all fit nicely into my old mac book laptop sleeve. My only con, as you have mentioned, is that it is not so comfortable to use on my lap when needed to type.

It is really convenient! The Surface Pro 6 does do a lot of things right. :) I think that you're a really good example of the demographic of people that this device would be perfect for. When a person is working full-time and studying part-time, ideally they'd want a powerful 2-in-1 that doesn't compromise on portability. The Surface Pro 6 definitely delivers there; those kinds of people would be able to take advantage of everything that this computer has to offer. Thanks for sharing!!
@sydjaguar
@sydjaguar 5 лет назад
sorry disagree. The iPad pro doesn't have a headphone jack, the USB C is a compromise. The Surface Pro 6 is a great work machine. Yeah, I agree about the USB C but I have a surface dock and it meets all needs. Otherwise, good review and great camera angles!
@EJYu
@EJYu 5 лет назад
I think your point about the iPad Pro's USB-C port is arguable. But other than that, yeah, I see where you're coming from. And I totally, totally agree with you on the Surface Pro 6 being a great work machine. But there's definitely still a lot of room for improvement here. Anyway, I also have a Surface Dock that I use extensively with my Surface Book 2, and it's good for the most part! But I still think that the SP6 could've been an absolutely killer machine had it been equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port. High-bandwidth ports are always welcome in my eyes. Now, the wrong way of approaching this would be if Microsoft were to completely replace the USB Type-A and Surface Connect ports with a bunch of USB-C ports like what Apple had done with all their MacBooks. THAT would be frustrating, no doubt about that. But after seeing how they handled I/O on the Surface Book 2, I'm pretty optimistic that USB-C would just be an addition to the existing selection of available ports. Perhaps Mini Display could go―which I wouldn't mind too much―but I also wouldn't want anything more than that to be replaced. That would make for some great I/O. Don't quote me on any of this though; I could be wrong if Microsoft does decide to do something very Apple-y. Anyway, thanks for watching! And thanks for the comment too! It makes for a really good discussion!

As for someone who has used this for only month and above, I would say this has been one of my best investments right now. I could do Artworks and write essays at school without even worrying about the weight. Though it does heat up a lot and photoshop or illustrators being a bit laggy and crashy. I've just bought one, as an upgrade from a low range late 2010 laptop. I'm not bothered too much about the aesthetics, it looks nice, but besides I think its a case of function over form and it manages to do both really well. I don't think usb c should be such an issue. The few devices that I own which support the physical c-type port don't support the transfer speeds so it makes no odds to me. And the few that I have all come bundled with C to A leads. I think actually there are very few things in the real world that could actually utilise usb 3.1 speeds, a theoretical maximum of 1250 megabytes per second, even my fastest memory cards for my devices can only do 120 megabytes a second. The current fastest Cfast and XQD cards all run speeds within the theoretical maximum speeds of usb 3.0, so I don't really know, other than a hardware plug style perspective what real advantage a c-type port provides. I'd love to see a common example of needing this speed and hardware style if there is one though.
@EJYu
@EJYu 5 лет назад
I'd love to make a video showing these common examples―it's been on my mind. But I've been really busy lately. :/ I won't go into that right now, though. I can see your point about USB-C not being essential by any means to (I guess) most of the general PC users out there. But I still feel like it would've been a nice addition to this device's port selection-and it'd be especially useful for many power users out there. Good observations though! Thanks for the comment!!

@@EJYu I've got devices that are 100% USB-C and I don't use the ports on those except to charge - In 2019 for many the ports don't get used that much. Using Surface pro 4 for over a year and a half now, thoroughly satisfied with the overall performance. The only issue right now is that of the keyboard which has started ripping off from the edges that's taking away the overall look of the laptop. Microsoft really needs to fix this issue. Surface Pro is a tablet that can also work as a laptop while IPad Pro is a bigger version of an iPhone.

Surface pro 6 is ideal laptop for anyone looking to have a light weight device that can run full desktop programs. I agree about USB C or thunderbolt 3, but I don’t need external GPU or quick read/write speeds. I have a gaming desktop for all that. If you feel like you prefer your standard laptop and don’t want to replace it with the pro 6, just get the surface go, upgrade the OS to windows 10 home and use that surface go as your tablet/laptop sidekick, especially if you plan on ever taking notes, make the extra purchase for the pen and utilize OneNote. What’s great about the Go is that it’s smaller, cheaper and is not Microsoft’s vision to replace someone’s laptop, it’s your sidekick to your standard laptop. I love carrying my MacBook Pro for writing code and basic computing. I use my surface pro 4 for OneNote, where I take notes or design my code before I start writing anything. If you have any questions just ask me.

E. J., very nice job on the review! I do however partially disagree with this and most other reviews that place so much emphasis on the type C usb port. Would it be nice to have? I guess so, but I for one would probably rarely use it. What I DO use is the type A port. I also very much appreciate the magnetic charging connector. If I need to connect to my larger desktop monitor I use the Microsoft Surface Dock. Anyway, thanks again!
@EJYu
@EJYu 5 лет назад
I mean, I know that I would be using USB-C if it were on the Surface Pro 6. You know, I feel as if some people are just uneasy about USB-C on laptops b/c they don't want today's Windows laptops to be going down the path that MacBooks went. (USB-C everything.) In that case, that's definitely not the way to go, for sure. I do think that USB-C ports would be very nice to have (especially if they were Thunderbolt 3 ports) on a laptop, but only if they will exist alongside ports like USB Type-A and maybe some display I/O ports here and here. USB-C by itself is frustrating to administer on a laptop, no doubt. I'd hate to be carrying dongles everywhere I go. And then there's the discussion about those who are dependent on Type-A being forced to transition over. When I talk about USB-C in my video, I'm talking about the Surface Book 2's approach to port selection. But anyway! You do make some great points here, and I don't want to talk any further, haha! Thanks for the comment! It makes for a great discussion!

I don't understand your frustration with the design. The front of the device is still so futuristic in 2019. The only hardware thing I'd complain about is no Thunderbolt 3 at $1000. But the iPad Pro doesn't have that port either (also, it still runs iOS löl)
@EJYu
@EJYu 5 лет назад
Honestly, I really hate bezels, so I _really_ want Microsoft to shrink those bezels (at least a little bit) next generation. Bezels are _not_ futuristic. And that's my thing w/ both Thunderbolt 3 _and_ USB-C too: it's really annoying how the Surface Pro, Book, and Studio lineups aren't equipped with Thunderbolt 3 at such a premium price. I really want Microsoft to add at least a USB-C port to future generations of the Surface Laptop lineups―and the Surface Pro lineups too as long as they're TB3 ports―WITHOUT having to remove (or downgrade) any of the existing ports on those devices. (Except for Mini DisplayPort. I think that's arguably okay to remove.) I _really_ dislike the port selection on MacBooks, but I also _don't_ hate USB-C at all. And after seeing what they did with the Surface Book 2 in terms of port selection, I'm really optimistic that Microsoft knows what to do. (Hopefully I don't have to eat my words.)

You mentioned eGPU and sure that would be a nice to have but I don't think that many people would use it. I don't think eGPU is very popular at all even on devices that support it. I do agree it would be nice if they'd add some more modern ports, but perhaps the need for something new and shiny is just a sign of the world in 2019. If it doesn't add anything functional it's not a huge issue for many. I am a developer so I don't copy media around on thumb drives etc. and I don't have to connect external peripherals except for a monitor when I'm at a desk, and the Surface Dock is ideal for that - All of my peripherals are wireless so I don't use ports on devices in general. I avoid physical media at all costs but not everybody is like that. Bear in mind, I am one of those people who doesn't care that phones dropped headphone jacks.

Very good review! What is another pro with the new processors is that the i5s are fanless, which is just wonderful. Yes, the Surface Pro is lagging behind the market and the design is a bit stale (but I think still stunning). The sad thing is, that in this 2in1 category there really is no competition. There is the Lenovo X1 Tablet, with a larger, arguably better display and 2 Thunderbolt ports. But it has abysmal battery life and terrible speakers. And that's about it, the Eve V is a disaster, the Huawei Matebook E has Y series processors and is not widely available. The HP Spectre Folio is more cumbersome in every way. Dell 2in1s are getting old by this point and were never great to begin with. And the iPad Pro, while being an amazing machine cannot replace your main computer unless you're willing to make very serious compromises. So while the Surface Pro 6 maybe is not the Surface Pro refresh we are waiting for, it is the best 2in1 on the market right now.

I think this is the most honest reviews I've seen so far. I bought Surface pro 6 entry level matte black with 256G SSD as a design student 2 weeks ago. Look I have some mix feelings too, even though I did enjoy some discount as a student. Two days into usage, I notice that the back stand support lead surface coating was coming off; bringing back the awful memories I had with the Surface RT. No USB-c support. It feels good, but I feel some of the vital elements are still missing.

Wait: that iPad comparison is very misguided: yes, the iPad pro has USB C, but they lacked at the begining mouse support, you can't still connect am external drive and lots of dongles are not compatible with an iPad, making the USB C port VERY underused, at least you can actually do stuff with the surface's port. Also an iPad cannot replace your laptop, this has been very well established already by everyone. So yes, the improvement was greater than the surface's, but the surface is still waaaaaay ahead, I would dare to say they are not competing in the same category. One is a laptop that can be a tablet capably, but with clunky software and the other is a tablet that if you squint enough and are desperate enough can barely be used as a laptop. This comparison was SUPER simplistic. And I love the iPad, but come on, don't trick your viewers.

Also, you can't call the surface's port selection lack luster when it has a displayport port and expandable storage.

If only its tablet mode was good. I wanted to buy a tablet and thought surface pro 6 just as a tablet might work but apparently thats not the case. Reviews suggest that just as a tablet the surface pro 6 is very clunky. Its near perfect as a laptop but if your just looking for a tablet, I guess for now Ipads are the way to go, until atleast samsung or huwawei make a killer tablet that can compete with an ipad pro.

They paint it, that's how they get the black color. So it DOES chip off. I use a Surface Pro 2 (Last black Surface before this one) and it's all chipped and it looks terrible... And I'm really careful and nice to my tech. However... it is like 5-6 years old at this point. The reason I still use a Surface Pro 2: the pen. It was the best pen, Microsoft really made a poor move by moving to the N-Trig technology. The SP2 uses Wacom, does not need a battery in the pen, and is WAY more accurate, responsive, and quick. As a student who takes all his notes on it multiple times a day, every day, for 6 years, that makes a huge difference.Nobody is really upset about this because it was really the SP3 that was a big success and is really popular and nobody really knows the SP2 exists. I've actually never seen another one in the wild before. Really rare computers. Really think and chunky... I love it!

Hi, I'm watching a lot of reviews for the Surface Pro and everyone pretty much says the same thing about their drawing experience on it compared to the iPad pro. I haven't heard anyone go into detail about it. Is it the lack of performance of the Surface Pro or is it just the way the Apple pencil feels when drawing that everyone prefers? Does Photoshop lag on the Surface compared to say Procreate on the iPad?
@EJYu
@EJYu 5 лет назад
Hey, great question! I can give you some more insight on this. ••• To answer your first question, I like the drawing experience on the *2018* iPad Pro better because of how nice and rewarding the second-generation Apple Pencil feels. It's just really fluid and has amazing response times. Paired with that display-which has a superior refresh rate of 120 Hz-, the 2018 iPad Pro is just super nice, refreshing, and fun to draw on. Comfort is capitalized here. You probably know this already, but I do want to mention that superior technology-when it comes to creating artwork digitally-may not get you to draw better; it's all really just a matter of comfort when it comes to drawing on a computer, and the 2018 iPad Pro paired with the second-gen Apple Pencil really appeals to my personal comfort spot well. However, that doesn't mean that the Surface Pro lacks in performance. Although I may really enjoy the 2018 iPad Pro and second-gen Apple Pencil more for drawing because of how it feels, the 2018 iPad Pro is still not capable enough to do a large chunk of my crazy large art projects. I actually still use Microsoft Surfaces more for most of my digital art projects because it can handle my more demanding projects (i.e. ginormous canvas sizes, etc.) much better, so to speak. (Notice how I'm really specific with the device I'm comparing the Surface Pro 6 to in my review. It's NOT just any iPad Pro that I drastically like to draw on more than the SP6. It's _specifically_ the latest iPad Pro as of this video. In all other cases, I think Microsoft Surfaces are better than iPad Pros for drawing because of the pen technology in the 2017 Surface Pen and the programs available to you since the SP6 has Windows 10 on its side.) Here's how I would break down my *hardware preference* between the iPad Pros (generally-speaking) and the Microsoft Surface Pro 6: 2018 iPad Pros > Microsoft Surface Pro 6 > Everything Else Apple Pencil (2nd gen) > Surface Pen (2017) > Apple Pencil (1st gen) > Surface Pen (2015) ••• To answer your second question, it depends. And it actually does. Let's say you're planning to draw on a canvas size of 4200 x 3000 or something around there. Both the Surface Pro 6 and most iPads could probably handle that in your preferred application for each ecosystem. (In this case, assume Photoshop CC would be used with the Surface Pro 6, and Procreate would be used with the iPad Pro.) Both can get the job done. The iPad Pro has a smoother drawing feel in my opinion. The Surface Pro 6 is more capable though. Unrelated, but thought I'd just mention: I have unlimited layers on the Surface Pro 6. I don't on my 2018 iPad Pro with Procreate (it's actually super limited). I can also work with big canvas sizes on my Surface Pro 6 without question. Procreate on my 2018 iPad Pro has hard limits. ••• Hm... hopefully I didn't leave anything else out, so... if I did, just lemme know. Hopefully, I'll see it. I can answer any remaining questions you'll have. (I did write this response extremely quickly, so lemme know if you need clarification on something too.) Thanks for the comment! I hope this information helps you. :)

XD If you ARE interested in watching it, I'd just skip to where I start talking about the Apple Pencil and my drawing experiences. There should be timestamps in the description somewhere or in a pinned comment, iirc.

@neptune2011fall Technically it could, but Apple would need to release a compiler for it. To me this is unlikely to happen as it would more than likely hurt their MBP sales. Its definitely possible for Apple to release a version of X-Code for it and to allow other compilers as well. Honestly, probably won't happen anytime soon. There is a hackish way to do it and thats to have something like TeamViewer installed on you main machine that would do the compiling and use TV on your iPad and sort of do a "remote" code type of thing. But since you are relying on another machine to compile for you...its meh. Another alternative would be to use AWS and setup an EC2 instance with whatever language you want to code in and SSH into the box. As you can see there are ways around it, but you're not enjoying the rather expensive hardware you purchased to do the actual compiling. I would love to see Apple allow the iPad to compile everything from C, C++, Swift, Rust, Java, C#. Would definitely be a fun time. It would be super cool to actually develop an iPad app ON the iPad.

For fucks sake, people need to stop crying about no Thunderbolt or USB-C on the Pro 6. I've been using the Pro-6 for about a year now, and I'm perfectly content with the USB-A 3.0 ports on the Surface Dock. The only device I currently own that uses USB-C is my Google Pixel 2 XL, and that is only for charging. Every other device I need and use on a daily basis, all my external SSDs, the audio interface for my DAW setup, ect., are all USB 3.0 devices with a Type-A plug.

Likely a far too late, but as a Surface Pro 6 user, I can definitely say that Blender works on it just fine. I've used Blender for a lot of things, and it handles it well enough, and I've done things like the donut tutorial, and the anvil tutorial, and it handles those just fine. However, when I subdivided the anvil for sculpting, it takes a little bit switching between edit mode and object mode, but other than that, it's fast enough. However, it is still just a laptop so don't expect it to have the same performance as desktop GPUs.

@EJYu
@EJYu 5 лет назад
I'm just a hobbyist digital artist, but I draw fairly often. Any stroke-stabilization tool (like Lazy Nezumi Pro, or built-in utilities like the one present in the more recent versions of Photoshop CC, etc.) could help lessen the intensity of the Surface Pen's jitter situation. I usually don't take these solutions into account in my reviews because I'm reviewing laptops and related computers as-is. But behind the scenes, yes, pen-stabilization tools may help to lessen the intensity of pen jitter on any of the Surface products.

@EJYu
@EJYu 5 лет назад
But you could say the same about Surface Connect. All we have right now is the Surface Dock from 2015. You see, the Surface Connect port has the bandwidth to support things like eGPUs, 10-bit displays, and R/W speeds that peak with (for example) external NVMe drives and such; however, Microsoft hasn't made anything at all to really take advantage of this port. (The Surface Book lineup's keyboard bases don't count.) Devices like those already exist for the USB-C interface though, and they work extremely well. I've spent a lot of time doing my own research on the Surface Connect port. If you think that Surface Connect's utility is higher than that of USB-C, I feel as if you haven't tried USB-C nor take advantage of everything that it's capable of doing yet.
@anzatzi

The problems with surface pro 4 are: when machine gets hotter (under load) ghosting on the display occurs (the open windows leave traces on the display like ghosting). Then problem with the type cover (it doesn't recognize the type cover, but when I reset the surface the type cover works again). I had both problems. Don't know if these problems are fixed on the surface pro 2017 and surface pro 6. And if new problems happen. So it's a great device if microsoft fixes those problems (and other problems).

With USB you could turn this small PC into a gaming beast with an eGPU. All 2019 should include at least one thunderbolt 3 port for future proofing.
@EJYu
@EJYu 5 лет назад
I don't think it's overrated. It's extremely useful. For people like me―who use fast external storage devices and wish to connect hubs and external computer components that can take advantage of high bandwidth ports―it would be _much_ appreciated. The thing is though, equipping laptops with USB-C needs to be done in a practical way. Approaching USB-C adoption the way Apple did (by making every port on a laptop USB-C only) would piss me off so much. USB-C needs to complement other ports―such as Type-A, audio I/O jacks, and the Surface Connect port in the case of the Microsoft Surfaces. --- Edit: On the note of future-proofing, I think future-proofing is honestly a joke, tbh. I used to think technological future-proofing was a very real thing with consumer electronics not too long ago, but, from what I've learned while playing around with the current generation of laptops, future-proofing is barely entertained by laptop manufacturers. If you replace that word with longevity, _then_ I can agree with MadOrange644's point. "All 2019 [laptops] should include at least one Thunderbolt 3 port" to maximize longevity.
