John the black birds are the actually filing and dive bombing or floating on surface and going down at wading river there always on the water where I fish but never seen them take flight and bomb the water yet ?
Fishing Green Harbor, MA this summer. The predominant bait right now and should continue to be are bunker. I was planning on doing some light tackle bass/blue fishing with bucktails. What color and brand should I use for this type of fishing
Thinking about hitting the surf fluke fishing has slowed to a crawl in my back Bay Area. Not happy about that so...your thoughts on summer surf fishing worth trying? Thanks in advance hope to see more videos soon!
Do you think that the 9'/VS200 combo is a good setup to have for Long Island? I want to bring a very similar combo of what you use in the video to LI and maybe Montauk and fish for a week. Thanks in advance.
Hi John, how did you cut the butt off the blank? i tried getting a good guide on how to do it but couldnt find anything. before i try my luck at a bait and tackle store. i wanted to know how you did yours.
I am here at central cali and it seems that I spend about hr and I don't catch any striper, when I switch to perch rig then I catch a perch, does this mean that there are no stripe bass at the beach I am fishing at?
John, great video. If you were fishing similar conditions at night would you be more inclined to drop down in weight to slow down your retrieve speed, or do you find that the same retrieve speed will work day/night??
Another excellent video John. I was wondering, do you get many fluke fishing with jig & pork for stripers? Also have you tried Gulp Alive belly strips (about 7" long)?
My reel is pre-spooled with 25 lb monofilament and it would be a pain in the neck to take that off. I am going to try Robert Moses On Sunday. Hope the monofilament works. For blues, should I use hopkins lure or 3/4 oz bucktail?
Ship Vacations It forms knots because when you reel in your lure, the line has too much slack so it doesn't lay on the spool evenly and tightly so when you go to cast, it tangles. your lure may be too light or your retrieve may just be too slow (hence the slack). Hope this helps.
John, I have 25lb monofilament main line. Is that good for stripers? Also I have the same setup for blues with a 60# steel coated leader. Is that good for blues, thanks and is Robert Moses State Park good?
Can you tell me what size tac clip your using on the buck tail?whey not use a dropper loop on the buck tail and change it that was.? I'm asking so I can learn from it not to criticize.
Hey John. When I fish the bucktail, a lot of times it seems to be dragging along the bottom. Even when I speed up the retrieve it still happens. Any advice?
do you have any problems with line lay on your VS? I always spool up at home and would rather not have to go to the shop to get the hourglass line lay I heard works better with VS'
Hi John, according to the Lamiglass site the GSB 120 1L casts from 2 to 4 oz. Is there any different technic to casts a 3/4 oz bucktail using this blank? Thanks.
+Sóstenes Barros I've used that blank in 9.5 and 9-foot length, cutting from the butt. 3/4-pounce BT is just fine. 4 ounces on the uncut 10? Sounds heavy to me.
+John Skinner Fishing Thanks for the answer, John. I got this information from this page www.lamiglas.com/blanks/saltwater-surf-blanks/. Sounds heavy to me too. Maybe I did a misinterpretation of the data Sorry about my english. It's not my native language.
Hi John, I believe that its likely to apply your teaching most anywhere, but I didn't know if you ever fish up on cape cod, where, if you don't have a boat, it often feels limited to where you can go, and at the same time, so many types of options of locations with different bottom composition, bait changing, tides shifting constantly, etc. I so badly want to get better and put in as much time as I possibly can, but I am very much still a novice, and would love any suggestions you may have to help me. (p.s. I live in orleans, but I do try and go wherever I can for the fish - outer cape, and lower cape predominately, as time limits everything.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing yes, the canal has become an overcrowded destination sadly. People pack in there in summer every 10 ft trying to fish any available opening. It's also a very different set of gear needed (and about a 45 min drive to get there). The seals are bad, but worse toward monomoy and Orleans and some eastham. I often try to get to Wellfleet, truro and such. Nothing like inviting more and more great white sharks because stupid people want to protect every seal. Sad part is, they aren't even cute ones, they are big, smelly, ugly things that just make it a problem for us fishing folks. 😕
I very recently started to tie my own bucktails, could you give me some insight on what I should use to coat the threads after tying them? I just bought your book "Fishing the Bucktail" and I am going to start reading tonight. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks. :)
Hi John... thanks for your advice. In Ch. 11 you mention using lighter smaller buchtails maybe 1/4 oz or slightly larger in current around bridges. Do you recommend an Uncle Josh tail for these light buck tail applications?
Got it. I was writing about the bay situations I fish in the spring, and that a 1/4-ounce difference in weight can make a big difference in how your bucktail performs when using the lightweight bucktails appropriate for that setting. For example, a 3/4-ounce jig will perform much differently and a 1/2-ounce jig.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ooops didn’t mean to send wasnt done....maybe I misunderstood ....in Striper Pursuit. Ch11 p. 104. Para 1 you write about ‘narrow areas’ and ‘pinch point’ later on you mention ‘bridges’ which can be pinch points. In para 2 you write about ‘buck tails in the 1/2 to 1 oz range’ ... “1/4 oz difference in weight can make the difference” then “it’s fine to start heavy and back off on weight” ... b/c I use 1/4 oz buck tails but never thought of adding a tail to ine that small
Got it. :) I live in Northern California near Pacifica, CA. We get pretty could Striper runs on the beaches from Spring until September/October. Not quite like the cows on the east coast, but some good fish on occasion. Doing my best to get em and I always learn from your great videos. I've gotten a small amount of Stripers on Hopkins. Do you ever use spoons or chrome?
Great, thanks again. My Dad recently caught a nice steelhead just past the lip of the surf about a month ago on a Kastmaster. Beautiful Steelhead and a nice quick release. I just recently bought a 1oz. blue stripe Kastmaster with a white bucktail(single hook, crushed barb). Going to try it out tomorrow morning and or this weekend. Thanks for getting back to me and all the great tips.
Jason Rodriguez use a miki thats the ol skool pacifica lure..try other beaches to many people on pacifica beaches now..the big fish are still here just gotta try a differnt beach
John great video always enjoy your videos. But watching you dragging the fish along the dry sand gives me the chills. Def not good for the fish. You should be doing that in the water. Thanks
I have to disagree with your rod selection a fast action rod would be a better choice for buck tails moderate action rods are better for treble hook baits.
