ive had a lot of success on the hot, flat calm days bringing fish to the surface with the pencil and then landing them on the spook. when the water temps were lower they would hit the pencil and i had a lot of success. now i think they watch and are drawn to the area by the pencil, but they hit the spook more regularly. cannot wait for the temps to drop a bit because the fish all seem to be generally good sized this year.
Great job landing that fish, sir! I live in SF Bay Area, unfortunately stripers that size is almost impossible to hook up on top water surf fishing down here. Keep up the great work and videos🤙🏽
Thank you again for an informative presentation. You have previously stated that you use ca. 3' of 50 lb B.S. fluorocarbon leader attached via a barrel swivel (a method I generally use) and I did wonder why you use such a heavy leader on 30 lb mainline. My guess is that this for abrasion resistance in situations like we see here, but 3' seems a little short for this. Even though connection knots can be made that will pass through the rod guides with a minimum of clatter I don't really like this solution and I just wondered what your perspectives were on choice of leader set-up.
Hi John my name is Levi Donaldson. I just moved to northwest arkansas and discovered stripers here at Beaver Lake. I haven't caught one yet, but its only a matter of time I guess. John I just wanted to say great work and I am quite impressed with your channel. I am a software developer here and I am entering the writing field around angling as well. I would love to get some of your material (especially if you have anything on sharks) and continue to learn from you when possible. Thanks for the great content.
Again ,a great no nonsense video . Cracking conditions and a superb fish on my favourite lure! What is the typical terminal attachment you are using Mr Skinner. Ie mono to a snap link?
Big fan of your videos, I too fish here on Long Island with a couple of my friends. We dont go to many spots other than this dock near Robert Mosses(where we get kings, stripers, fluke, seabass), and i was just wondering if you can mention some good spots you would suggest. Thanks, awesome videos.
I see that you use a Van Staal 200. I am in the market for a fully sealed reel to match my 9' 3/4-4 Mojo Surf. I will be using it for both open beach and back bay conditions basically for everything. It will be fished underwater quite a bit and the fish I am targeting are big blues and other species that get up to 60 pounds. I am currently out of the states for a few years and the weather is always on the warmer side, so the cold causing a VS to lock up would not be a factor. Would you recommend a VS200 for this type of fishing?
Do you fish year round for stripers? All hours of the day?Seems I have no luck during summer months during daytime. Was told best to fish at night or just before dark and justafter sunrise.thanks
Hi john... How long is your leader and what size is it ? do you tie your lure straight to your leader or you use a snap swivel? Thanks for posting this very informative video...
Scott Shevlin Match the color of the baitfish in your area. When in doubt, go with white. Yellow and chartreuse are also good colors. Most people will opt for white and yellow. Hope that helps.
Hi John... I just purchased your book and discovered your you tube channel... I just purchased property on pebble beach on the north fork. I went fishing last week and kept getting my deadly dick lure caught in the rocks... Needless to say I lost all my lures... any advice?
