We saw the original Winters Tale at the Surf Theater in Huntington Beach,Ca in 1974 or 73. In those days to watch a surfing film you had to go to the movies. No video,DVD,cell phone,or internet,or computer for that matter. No Surfline cams,or forecasts. You went and checked it personally, never knew what you would wake up to find that day😎
I totally agree with you Jordy. We waited for the films of the great American surf film makers to be screened at our local beachside cinema. The next day we all wanted to surf like Miki Dora, Lance Carson, Dewey Webber, Phil Edwards etc etc etc. Lately the original version of AWT has been screening in cinemas in cinemas. It has been re-mastered by The Surf Film Archive, which is searching for many old surf films and re-presenting them on the big screen. Thanks for your input, Phil
We watched these movies in Auckland Newzealand at the crystal palace what a hoot great memories thanks for posting it's a long way from the 7os and still enjoy surfing
They used to show surf films in the 1970's at the firehouse municipal building in Seaside Park,NJ in a big room. All us kids would go it was a total stoked experience for us as all we got to surf were crummy summer waves on the Jersey shore at that age.I remember seeing "A Winter's Tale", "5 Summer Stories" " Pacific Vibrations" and a few more I can't remember the names of.
Surfers and places from my youth , as a 70yr young surfer , memories are sweeter when shared . We had it so good , no one will ever know except a surfer .Enjoyed the commentary so much . Thankyou all . A must watch ! for all surfers .
Hi Stevean, thank you for your comments on our film, it makes all the time and effort worth it. Also, it's good to know the commentary works with the film. Phil
Brilliant. I knew of your film when I was a grom, but didn't get to see it until this recent digital age. That era you so beautifully capture in The Making of AWT. Brings back amazing memories of being a young 70s surfer.
Hi Steve, glad you liked the film, it was fun to re-edit 'A Winters Tale' and have the digital version look so good in this format that so many people can enjoy it at it's best . Have a look at 'Surfing In The Sixties - Mona Boys' which is my favourite. Phil
What a fantastic film, epic shots! Brings back so many memories. I started surfing on the southern US east coast in 1972, at 16. Trip to Hawaii in wnter 1978. Got to see big Pipe and Sunset with my own eyes! So much style in the 70's. No one does bottom turns at Pipe anymore. People free-falling down that face was so radical. Definitely more dangerous.
Thanks nettwench for enjoying our film. A lot of work went into re-editing our 70s film ' A winters Tale'. When we get a response like yours it is very satisfying. Phil
Thanks so much, I made a Super 8 surf film in '73 High School, SoCal, and we studied Morning of the Earth, Pacific Vibrations, Nirvanic Symphony. This really brings back the memories of that era, as it turns out, YOU BLOKES spent your life in the best way possible. The editing and footage here is first rate, gotta watch a few more times.
Thank you 😃🤙 awesome content!! I was born in 1970 and I’m just trying to surf now can’t believe I’ve left it so long. It’s crazy how late in life you realise what can give you the most joy was always underneath your nose. Thanks again really enjoyed this 👏🏼
Thanks Steve, thanks for your input. It definately was a lot of work, but once it's finally finished it is great that so many people enjoy the film. Phil
That was Awesome 👍 Thank you for sharing those memories. I grew up on Maui, and would visit the North Shore every winter. Such great memories you brought back. Good movie quality for the time. I remember not to many humans around back in the day. Loved the Lopez footage. Mahalos .
Thanks so much for taking me back to those days. We seemed to have so much more time then and we were lucky have grown up in the surf environment. You captured it perfectly in A Winter’s Tale. It was great to see our heroes again and I love seeing them flick out. It was a legitimate move in those days to avoid the swim. Thanks again.
Hi dcsbike, all the work put into updating AWT is worth it when people like yourself appreciate it, thanks, Phil. Also as a keen cyclist in and around Sydney I really like your mountain bike videos. Keep up the good filmmaking.
I miss the care free and soulful styles of surfing during the 70's..We surfed not for the people watching on the sand and their screaming approval yells. Now a days whenever a surfer gets barreled or do a radical maneuver they gesture to the cameras and spectators watching... Cheers!
Cheers that brought back a heap of great memories. That was my era of surfing but should have had more kneeboarding ( only because that is what I rode ) x Sydney lad
Good Onya Chaps....Inspirational stuff then and now . Full flashbacks watching this.....Thanks and Kudos for re-creating/releasing this Classic .....Straight into the Archives . Gold.
Amazing footage and narrative, but why choosing music that is not part of that era? The soulful music of the early 70's (Morning of The Earth comes to mind) was an important component of that surf experience...
Thanks for posting this video. As amazing as today's surfers and surfboard designs are, I still love watching the vintage stuff, especially the Aussies. I think all my favorite surfers except Michael Ho, were Aussies. The surfing still has a creative and progressive flair. I love the little flick turn from MR at 11:30...what year was that? Thanks again and so long from too-much-surf California.
great film! It might be too late to change this, but the only thing that was distracting were the really edgy songs during the first half of the film. Hearing someone scream, "we want retribution" over and over just didn't seem to fit with the footage. Thanks for sharing though.
I invented The nightcap! A neoprene cap with a light! I had the honor of talking to George greenough before I embarked on my adventure! Thank you George!
Wow, that's really cool inventing the cap and light for George Greenough. Guys at Byron Bay tell me he still tears waves apart on his rubber mat. Thanks Phil.
I started surfing in 1974, picked up my first board at a garage sale, 7,2 PinTail Single Fin, Mark Warren, I was 8 years old, I learned to get back on the tail & turn it. What a great time we had in those uncrowded day's, still surf when I can get to the coast & wing a swell, thanks for the memories, Legends 🖐😎
Hi Sharon, I had met Peter Simons a few times and he was a very good photgrapher. Making this film was all about memories of past for us and many others. Phil
Hi Waxhead, the Angourie footage of Bruce Channon and Mark Richards was filmed in 1970. Lennox Head and Broken Head was filmed on separate trips in 1971 and 1972. Glad that you liked film.Phil
great stuff! just one question.. did he say that Nuuhiwa won the '66 World Contest in San Diego? (about 32 minutes in..) that was the year that Nat Young won the title..
Hi, I'm glad you liked the film. David Nuuhiwa won the International Championship on the 10th of May 1966 at San Diego. Phil. I hope that it clarifies the narration for you.
I dunno - but for mine, the music soundtrack is completely incongruent with what is going on on film.....which is amazing - and the narrative is wonderful too....just imagine if there was a more complimentary music sound track....Australian music from the times being shot ,maybe?
Hi William, I guess surfing competitions have demanded that style of surfing. Have a look at films with Dave Rastovich. He is a smooth stylist who does't surf comps but is regarded as one of the best surfers around. Phil
Hi Jed, at least you liked the footage and stories which was the important most part of the film. I guess you can't please everyone with the music. Thanks for your input. Phil
Ya I loved the stories and all the footage so much that I was upset by some of the more modern style music that didn’t have the same soul and was too harsh that I had to mute the sound in those bits till certain songs ended ha but I still enjoyed the whole film and will look for the original now, thanks for your reply, best Jed
