Aloha! My name is JR Matsumura and I was blessed to be able to surf some private sessions on the “trestles” setting @Wacosurf . There were 10 surfers in our group. This setting pumps out consistent lefts and rights in sets of either 3 or 4 waves. Perfect for learning how to surf in the pocket and finding your timing. If I could lend advice to anyone going, I would have 3 main points.
1) Bring the smallest board you feel comfortable with. In this video I’m riding a 5’6 Twin Fin Flat Earth by @firewiresurfboards (no trailer fin). I feel that the performance twin was a good call as I wanted the board as loose as possible in the pool. It gets really slopey the further out on the face you go at Waco and the pocket isn’t wide and so you wanna bring a board that’s not gonna take you too far onto the shoulder.
2) Be in the best shape of your life. The sets reset really quick on the Trestles setting, so once you finish your ride, you’re booking it back to the take off zone and before you know it you’re up and riding again. So prep the cardio and the legs.
3) Have fun out there! Surfing truly is a blessing and the Waco pool is literally “Disneyland” for surfers. Tons of waves, no battling, no hassling, and no drop ins. Just a great time in some great surf!
