See what the surge arrester (overvoltage limiter, SPD) serves in the electrical installation, how to connect it and what to look for, to use a 3-step protection limiting the effects of class overvoltages: B, C, D.
In order for the SPD surge arrester to work properly, it is necessary to ensure an efficient earthing installation with low resistance, so that in the event of a surge, the current flows to the ground, protecting the electrical installation of our apartment or house.
It is worth to use limiters for all cables coming to the house, i.e. phase and neutral conductors. Because not only from the Phase side there may be a surge, but also from the neutral conductor, so we protect both phase and neutral. The appropriate modules can be purchased depending on your needs.
For example, in an apartment if we have a single-phase installation, we buy either 2 modular SPD class B and C, where we connect L and N from the top, and a protective PE wire from the bottom.
Alternatively, we can buy 2 separate one modular SPD class B and C surge arresters and set them in the switchgear next to each other.
For example, in a house / flat if we have a three-phase system, we buy either 4 modular SPD class B and C, where we connect L1, L2, L3, N from the top and a protective PE wire from the bottom. Alternatively, we can buy 4 separate one modular SPD class B and C surge arresters and set them in the switchgear next to each other.
SPD is assembled at the very beginning of the electrical switchboard so that the path to the ground for overvoltage is as short as possible (the least resistance). The protective conductor should be of the appropriate cross-section, minimum 4mm for a small flat with a single-phase installation, up to 16mm in a large house with a 3-phase installation, but this must result from the electrician's project, of course in copper.
