A follow-on to last week's video where I made a mistake installing an SPD. It turns out length is important, and your wives/girlfriends/boyfriends etc. have indeed been lying to you about your laughable choad. Sorry to break the bad news.
This is a re-upload as the footage from the tester screen got lost in rendering on the original video. Very annoying as it had over 1000 views and several comments before I spotted it. Sorry.

I wonder how many people think its called a buzzbar instead of a busbar because of your either not knowing or because of some speech impediment.

@@dsesuk I was talking to a contractor in his late 30s, telling me how all he's ever done is sparks since he was 16 whilst he was doing one of the most anal eicrs ever, and then went and spoilt it all by saying BUZZBAR. Bet your related.
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 года назад
Sorry Mainline, that was flippant. Honestly mate, that's all I've ever heard it as, so maybe it's a regional variation? I have just thrown it out to a Whatsapp group I'm in whose members are other local sparks and some of the lads I went to college with. Only two have responded at the time of writing to say they too use "buzz". I don't think that's my influence - they don't watch this rubbish, they all think I'm a knob. I got some stick for saying MegaOhm instead of MegOhm on here too, generally by people who thought I was referring to Megger as a brand and didn't realise I was using the unit prefix for a million. I know it wrankles with you as you've asked before, but we yokels in these backward parts seem to put the zeds in. I've no idea why. I will see what other results come back from my straw poll and update you (if you're interested).
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 года назад
We're now up to three responses. They all say Buzz thus far. The last one had something to add about anyone who says "Bus", but you don't want the detail of the wording. Maybe more responses will come in tomorrow - I suspect the majority of the lads are pretending they've got better things to be doing on a Friday night, but I know they're all really like me... watching Naked Attraction on E4 with one hand wrapped around a cheap lager and the other down the front of their trousers.

@@dsesuk I don't think a 'career long' video on 'errors' is helpful to anyone (but may be a major book publisher would be interested ;-) ). I believe, Main switch enclosures are an exception to the non combustible enclosure regulation because in order to be a 'similar switchgear assembly' to a consumer unit, it must contain one or more type of overload protection, which it doesn't.. That's my understanding of it anyway.

Good stuff. Thanks for the update and the good guidance. Ive had a few issues with those Wiska glands though, There is nothing to hold it in place, other than a ridgy bit. As you wrestle with the tails they can pop out, and can be very frustrating. So much so, that its urge protection you need more. Stopping you throwing the board through the window. A cable tie round them helps a bit.

Another good video keep them coming! I have asked niceic about the double pole plastic isolators they said as long as there is no MCB or fuse in the enclosure it doesn’t have to be non combustible enclosure Also those wiska tails grommets are good but have no real strain relief, so I tend to use them if i need to install the meter tails in 2x2 trunking or if I’m bring the tails through the back of the consumer unit.

Just watched this and noticed the SPD is protected by an MCB along with a lot of talk regarding the tail lead lengths. We are concerned here about very short duration surges and was wondering if a study had been done to see how much the "current coil" inductance in the MCB affects the effectiveness of the SPD function as this is effectively an addition length of wire not to mention the inductive effect. The older ones of us will remember the days when we used to fit an inductor inline to the feed of a radio (Audio or CB) in a car to suppress the alternator whine. Also if the instructions say that the second SPD shown can be used on a TT system BEFORE the Type S RCD how can we be sure that an L>E failure (if that's possible L>N>E?) in the SPD isn't going to raise the CPC potential to a dangerous level before any internal protection kicks in given that the TT earth rod may have a significant Ze?

@seanpassant3174 4 года назад
@@dsesuk Should always be parallel. SPD's are great at dealing with very high frequency short term over voltage but actually don't deal with load through them all the time very well. It will change the performance of the device if you install it in series. Type 1 and Type 2 should only have load in them during a fault ideally. Type 3 devices are different and can have load through them all the time but are usually restricted to 16A as a result.

Great vids David, informative & funny & lets be honest, you need a sense of humour in this game. Just checked the Lewden instructions for type 2 & 3 SPD's & looking at the wiring diagram for each type of earthing arrangement it's not showing an earth from the device when used with TNC-S. Obviously it's a PEN arrangement so wondered what your thoughts are on this. Can the earth wire be omitted or is this a printing error perhaps?
@seanpassant3174

Definitely an error, all an SPD does is create a temporary short circuit to earth so you need to have the earth connected. If it isn't connected.......where is the energy going?

David have a look at the terminals on ABB miniature circuit breaker range...ask yourself why these knobs who create all these rules and regs ...pages and pages of the drivel ...dont enforce a rule which would force all circuit breaker manufacturers ...to copy the ABB terminals reducing loose connection issues...you can clip a din rail or smaller wire in the back and the big wire in the front...pity ABB costs a case of beers and some.

great videos david keep them coming please. 2 things I want to ask and am not having a go and I have never done either before and yes could just ring nappit guys as I am a registered electrician but I know they can even be wrong sometimes and quite often look at things in different ways. 1. I was under the impression that a 100 amp isolator could be in insulated housing I know you quote the reg but are you 100 % sure that's the case if it is just an isolator. this is just for my own knowledge and have never installed one. 2. again as far as I understood consumer units, isolators etc. installed in garages without living space above didn't have to be non combustible I guess im wrong could you confirm it please. again is just for my own knowledge and would never do it anyway I install non combustible in garages without living space above all the time its just for my own knowledge.
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 4 года назад
Thanks Pete. The reg regarding plastic only mentions switchgear. My belief is also that a self contained isolator is exempt from this, but that's the problem with the regs, it doesn't define it for certain leaving some saying it's okay, others saying it's not. Personally, I would still fit such an isolator if necessary. The plastic thing is concerned with 'dwellings', and from what I've seen most people take that to include attached or even detached garages. I find it best to stick to steel, although I have fitted the odd insulated enclosure in, say, outbuildings at the top of the garden that I know nobody can argue with me about!

Great video Dave.

It might all be a load of nonsense. It's certainly true that these things squash the noisy spikes, but it's impossible to tell whether our modern gadgets are built to withstand them anyway. When you have a failed appliance, do you lament the lack of surge protection which might have prolonged its life, or do you just spin it into the bin and replace it without investigating why it failed?

The fire rating only applies to the enclosure itself, so plastic glands are still permitted, although I don't know how well these sort of tails gland would fare. It might be a topic for JW, he often has things burning next to his shed. If I tried that, the wife would knock lumps out of me.

That's interesting, I thought the whole point of those removable SPDs was so that anyone could replace them if they fail! Interesting to learn that isn't the case.
@ketas
@ketas 4 года назад
well, to replace a spd you need to know correct ratings? and i would rather prefer if installation is checked by electrician if surge was indeed that big? one needs to come by anyway because meter is now busted, assuming it might have only like 14mm movs in it? though, an accumulated damage over time could blow the spd but now new meter on safety, it's better than that let's say edison screw where you could push finger directly... here, you can't do it, unless you get live from nearby devices... but that's me, i know that, would the consumer also know, i doubt?
@Berkeloid0
@Berkeloid0 4 года назад
@@ketas I presumed they were keyed so you could only replace the unit with one of the same spec. If one has overloaded then a visit by an electrician might be a good idea but if it's just worn out from a long life of small surges then it would make sense to be able to replace it yourself. Although in that case I'm not sure you'd even know if it was broken or not (since the indicator on it would still show it's fine), other than your LED bulbs all start blowing again!
@ketas
@ketas 4 года назад
the indicator would always show a failure... unsure if you can crack the mov (well excuse me if it also contains gdt?) with surge to make it open circuit with device still intact but if it shorts, it would blow it's (thermal) fuse i expect that manufacturers of those actually subject them to destructive surges to test each type of their products
@ketas
@ketas 4 года назад
i didn't know how they implented the fuse but from this cheap one in m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FQXecTM8yuo.html i found it could be just spring loaded solder joint... it feels fairly rugged and designed to always fail safe... and actual reputable brand would be even better i guess
@Berkeloid0
@Berkeloid0 4 года назад
@@ketas My understanding is that MOVs eventually wear out after conducting a large number of small surges, and stop working (failing open-circuit). If this happened the indicator wouldn't show failure as it wouldn't have gotten hot enough to melt that spring-loaded joint. However I never thought of using an insulation resistance tester to actually test the MOVs so that's a good idea.

@dsesuk
@dsesuk 4 года назад
True Chris, that would make more sense. This is an existing enclosure they've used for the product, so it was designed as a small CU without thought of SPD's, and I suspect they won't want to re-tool to save us a few centimetres!

So the Fuse Box SPD box is better than the Lewden, as it can safely be used as the main incomer switch.

Yes, the Fusebox model is designed to be used both as a main isolator and SPD whereas the Lewden is for use as an SPD only.

On the Lewden, if the SPD fails, will the local 32A mcb trip? I cannot see what use it is as an overcurrent device in this situation. Is the local 32A mcb just for working on the SPD without switching off the whole installation?
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 3 года назад
Hi John. Some earlier SPD boards simply had the device hanging off the main switch. In the event of the SPD going short circuit, which is a potential failure mode, they were reliant on the fault current heating a soldered joint within causing it to melt and spring open. Of course, not everyone liked the idea of relying on that joint failing in time to stop your main fuse from frying, so manufacturers started putting in localised breakers to take the hit should the time ever come.

Fruity hangover now overcome! I now wonder whether the prescribed distances and/or CSA relationship from HENLEY (Splice) from Origin...and relevance of subsequent 'Tail Distances' to downstream DB/CU's go one way or the other to either losing/gaining 'SPD' protection from EITHER incoming out internal transients dependant on position Away from Origin OR Away from DB (ie final CCTs requiring protection). One last point, I believe that the 'catastrophic' Failure of an SPD mentioned by @PaulMeenan of @e5group might have some validity when you mention the reliance of melting of a solder point for some sort of ADS to components 🤔
