I had surgery 5 years ago. I too felt fine afterward. But mesh is a foreign object in the body. Your body changes over time. Mesh doesn't. Every now and then I feel extreme pain in the area where the mesh is. Most days I am fine. If I knew then what I know now I would have insisted on surgery without mesh even though the risk of reoccurrence is higher. My advice is to continue to work out, diet and exercise so that your body doesn't make too many changes.
I had laparoscopic mesh back around 2001 and never had any complications. Not long after the surgery I never had even the slightest reminder that anything had ever been wrong. I ran the marathon that year, and in those days did weight training until decades later when COVID closed down the gyms. I still run, but at my present age very slowly.
Reading some of these comments in here I can’t believe people want so long with an inguinal hernia. I had one in 2009 on the right side. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life. I was in Germany at the time and I couldn’t wait for the doctor to get me in to get it done. He used mesh and so far so good.

Female, 64 y.o., 115 lbs. : Had a left side Shouldice inguinal hernia repair 40 years ago- still holding strong through a very active life including 40 years weight training. Fast forward to a new inguinal hernia on my right side. Pretty disappointed that surgeons in my area only do mesh repairs now. I know I’m n = 1 for my very successful & sturdy open/Shouldice repair, but I really don’t want mesh and I especially don’t want general anesthesia. Ugh.
I had my surgery last week and so far so good, I know that you who are reading are doing well just like me, don't be afraid, just maintain your health to have a better quality of life and fully enjoy your life.
The medical device industry is not as well regulated as the drug industry. I looked into mesh for my repair and decided the methods products were still being developed. Went with Shouldice repairs as they have been doing them for over 80 years. I am very happy with the results.
I had three hernias repaired on March 21 of this year. I'm 75 and live in a cabin off grid in NW Montana. I have to cut my on firewood etc. I have always been fit, Thank God for that. I taught Jujitsu in the basement of the local bank here when I was sixty. Like I said, I've always been fit, but I have to tell you, yhe first week was just hell. Getting in and out of bed to go to yhe bathroom or put a log on the fire was near impossible. The second week was better and today Im back to working out. My surgeon told me that they have a new mesh and that the old one was problematic. He must've been right. I feel great. The first six weeks were sucky, but since then its been all down hill. If you do get hernia surgery, make sure to stay hydrated. Going to the bathroom can br very painful if you don't.
Bilateral inguinal hernia mesh six years ago, problems immediately after, no problems showed in tests and after a five year long fight i went out of state for removal surgery and it was wrapped around blood supply left side. One year later i figure out (not a doctor) i pulled a pelvic muscle that affected the testicle cord and that the mesh made these issue's worse. Just starting therapy after six years of deteriorating pelvic muscles. Natural repair advocate here the mesh in my case was tight and continued to tighten after surgery.
@@shadygrizzly I went to Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Talk to Dr Rosen or Dr Krpata Good luck with your recovery, I'm slowly making progress with therapy.
Omg. I think this is what is happening to me . I'm getting soooo sick and nobody can figure out why . I had two hernia mesh implanted and muscles repaired by my pelvis . Now I feel like there's a tight band in there. It causes horrible constipation, horrible reflux, I desperately need help . Has anyone else gotten really sick from these ? Brain swelling , high blood pressure , brain fog ,hormone problems ,panic attacks ,etc
it's abit similar, that after i got my laparoscopic surgery done, i felt something that i've never felt before in the past (before surgery). initially i felt discomfort around my pelvic and groin area, urinating feels like a torture and it felt like im having a UTI, but it doesn't burn when i urinate. after 4 weeks have passed, the pain is 80% reduced, and i am still having around 20% discomfort. I then turned to TCM that alleviates the discomfort i am having. I went to the local TCM practitioner in my area and he prescribed me powder capsules that supposed to reduce the discomfort, the TCM medication i consumed is similar to the patented TCM medication that you guys can find on the internet called "Ba Zheng San" - but my local TCM practitioner added few more herbs on top of that. I've been taking it for a week and it gives me around 10% discomfort. I know that TCM doesn't work the same like Western medication, TCM works slower but sure, but at least no harsh side effects like many antibiotics do. On top of the TCM i took, i also consume quercetin supplements and been doing kegel exercise too. l am just hoping that this will get resolved soon in 3-6 months.
@@ahsnap9103 I had an inguinal hernia on the left side an since surgery 7 years ago an everything has been great until last this August I injured myself at work a week after having a heat stroke and stood up too fast from a stooped position and felt my left testicle pull really bad an had immediate pain an a limp. And since then I've been having stabbing pains on the left side of my pelvis and it feels like it's the mesh or something internally stabbing me along with testicle pain. I've had 2 panic attacks and have been to Dr's, urologists, ER's and none of them are exactly sure what it is. They think I pulled a muscle when I injured myself an now that the mesh is pinching nerves. An causing the pain. The only remedy I've heard so far is getting nerve ablation or nerve blocking shots. And It just doesn't sit right with me. I've already been on pills an could still feel the pain an they just messed my stomach up. But they also have found an epydidmal cyst on my testicle thru an ultrasound an just looking up symptoms on google it seems to me now it could be the cyst causing the pain. Had non-mesh repair in 2014 -- all good thus far (I'm 78). In the initial consultation, the surgeon asked why I wanted non-mesh; I told him I had heard little positive about the use of mesh. He said "no problem" as he knew some 20+ methods to repair a hernia and would decide on the method to use when he got in and saw the condition of the nearby body parts. He made no effort to inform me of the benefits of mesh use -- maybe he did not think them to be great enough to bother informing me. Post-op, while I was still out, the doctor my wife that the method he used had a 15% failure rate in 5 years.
I had a bilateral inguinal hernia repair years ago. They used a mesh that was like a flat spool or 2 disks connected in the middle. I forget the name of it. It seemed like a good part. I haven;t had any problems with it. I have to say that it was a painful recovery. I think that it tore the muscle on a seated leg press machine.
they used to but the rate of recurrence was very high because abdominal wall pressure is very strong. The expansion of the internal abdominal wall tears a primary suture closure back open which is why they began using mesh. they are coming out with mesh that fully absorbs and disappears over time therefore its your own collagen covering the defect after abosrption.

I hope you are telling people that the mesh can leave people disabled, lose body parts, can fuse and migrate into other tissue. Recurrence can happen with mesh too, the Shouldice centre is better equipped for recurrence. As a patient whom has had a defective mesh implanted, I can safely say this surgeon knows very little in how mesh can harm people.
@englishwithmaya6096 Plastics indeed pose health risks due to the chemicals they contain. These include bisphenols and phthalates, which disrupt the endocrine system and have links to reproductive harm, cancer risk, and metabolic disorders1. Additionally, tiny microplastics, found in food, water, and air, can leach chemicals and present their own risks12. Plastic production is high, and its non-biodegradability threatens the environment3. Thousands of chemicals in plastics, some unregulated, may impact health4. In short, while plastics are ubiquitous, their potential harm warrants awareness and efforts to reduce exposure. 🌍🚫🔬
Yeah man, and an untreated hernia can kill you in the worst case scenario. Thats how most surgical repairs work....its not as good as simply not having the original injury in the first place, but the risks are worth it when compared to leaving the orignal injury untreated. @@computerblue01 of course. Really the worst day was day two, but in fairness, they had warned me about it. It’s because your surgeon will put some internal anaesthetic which wears off about 48 hours after the surgery, and that’s why day two it’s the worst time. Now don’t imagine some horrible unimaginable pain. It’s just sore, and then you go online to find out why you’re sore, and you find out all these horror stories which, as you say mainly reflect how things used to be. But to give you an idea I was back at work on day five I’m a musician, and on day eight I was on stage giving a piano concert. I have been literally pain-free since about day 8. I kept forgetting to take the painkillers that they prescribed me because I wasn’t in any pain. You’ve got to be careful and remember not to lift more than 5 kgn it’s easy to forget because I really felt absolutely fine and normal. I’m going to be four weeks since the operation in a couple of days, and they will let me start lifting my own bag to go to work, which is the only thing wasn’t allowed to do. I have full trust in the doctors. Listen carefully to what they tell you about after-care, listen carefully to the physiotherapist, who will visit you either just before, or after surgery, and do the very simple physical exercises that they give you. It’s really important that you don’t just lie in bed, that you move as early as you can so that it heals not just in straight line, but actually it heals organically around your body movements. Roughly 24 hours after surgery I was up by myself in the house, going up and down the stairs, Was completely independent and didn’t need any support walking. You will be absolutely fine. Listen carefully to the advice and be proactive, move as early as you can, and do the physio exercises. On day one I could barely do them , but then it gets better. And that’s the thing - to do them a little every day. You have to lift up your knee and on day two I over did it and it sent shooting pains, but that was because I forced it. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Where are you having it done? I was in central London.
Agree. I have a small umbilical hernia that developed during my pregnancy and was thinking about surgery....? But I decided not to risk my life, it's too much risk and untold possible complications. I have an umbilical hernia which I believe was caused by throwing up when I was on chemo and radiation. I actually threw up my jejunal feeding tube until it was a couple inches from my airway. The Surgeon said in 20,000 operations , he had never seen that. It had been protruding out of my stomach valve for several days, and now the valve is less efficient. (Replacement peg tube was put in after that.) I could see on the scope pictures the old tube displacement. The doctor let me watch on the monitor. 15 years later, I was wondering if I needed a hernia operation. The Surgeon who was going to do the operation was going to use a round patch that was a little larger than a silver dollar. I felt like he was doing assembly line hernia operations (he was talking fast). He showed me the patch. I cancelled the surgery. I don't think, years later, that the patch would have been nearly large enough. Fat protrudes, and I push it back in. When I weigh less, it affects me less. I nearly died of the treatment, but it cured me.

Had my surgery done with mesh 6 months ago. Had a much longer recovery with a decent amount of pulling tissue type of pain than what has been stated of 4 to 6 weeks. As time went on is did get better but certain random movements cause knee dropping pain. Recently had a sciatica problem which needed Therapy core strengthening exercises. A month after starting therapy things were getting better for the sciatica and we pushed a bit more (took it very slow and light at 1st). Then got more aggressive somewhat with therapy and also the next day I tripped and fell with NO obvious pain at all. Got up quickly without a problem. 2 days later my hernia pain (which never really went away. just some random movement causing pain like tissue and/or nerves fibers pulling apart) got so severe it dropped me to my knee and needed to have the surgeon look at it after 6 months. He said no infection or swelling and gave me some pain meds. Now 2 weeks later and I still have a lot of pain and soreness. Feels similar to a week after surgery with the sharp burning, pulling apart feeling I kept having but the core muscle don't feel weak. I've read all the problems some people have had and just hope I'm not going to be another one of them. I will say, there's plenty of studies about mesh problems, some of which down play the %'s of how many patients complain about it. But I've see enough people and read enough from others who have problems to know that it's not a very small amount who have issues. My doctor has been said to have a great reputation for the surgery, but although he's got a decent bedside manner I feel like I didn't get much input of the possibilities. I did do research for a maybe a week. More about which type of surgery was best. Open, laparoscopic or robotic. Not as much about the mesh issues down the line. I've now dug deeper and am hoping I'm not one of those with constant pain. Before this latest setback I could swing a golf club after a few months and do most out door work around the home, except digging or really heavy lifting. Now, I can only function with easy stuff. I'm hoping the fall I had just ripped the scar tissues, but that ripping tissue pain never completely went away before the setback. Just had less occurrences. People who may read need to know not just about the good outcomes. But those who have to deal with the bad too. It may be something to deal with for the rest of your life.
I'm at day 6 post laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair with mesh. I feel great already. Post-op checkup tomorrow, and expect to be back to work the day after.
10 months ago i had inguinal mesh repair on my left side...about 5 months afterwards i started going to gym again - no issues...but in the last 3 weeks ive felt a very "tight" feeling at the surgery site .. and when i cough i feel stabbing small pains .. what is going on? I went to the doctor and he got me to cough with his hand over my left side and he said there's a chance i could have re-opened the hernia .. I am so pissed off right now..i'm having a scan in 2 months to see wtf is happening ... when i dont move for 2 days then the coughing issues/tightness etc go away .. but whenever i'm active it flares up...can someone put me at ease ?

Lacking objective findings it has been impossible to rule out mesh erosions but plastic chunks in my Ostomy bag when NPO has been ignored. Please anyone help me… even the doctors were puzzled and one suspected erosion. Lost 25 lbs can’t eat what test can find this ???? 🙏🏼
Why they can't use or invent something natural innovation, something new to use instead of plastic , something which is not causing infection and anything toxic to body but in the same time it's strong and holds everything together without another tear
I had the daistisis Recti surgery 2 weeks ago and he mesh used is biodegradable and will be out my body in 2 years. I’m in the United Kingdom so maybe different mesh bin other countries.
I had an open double inguinal hernia worst pain I’ve ever experienced, nerves were damaged and had extreme burning pain for the first year, after four years lower abdomen is still numb! Had no pain before just a lump on either side, never would I get this done unless it’s an absolute necessity!!🥴
I’m confused because I had an inguinal hernia mesh fitted but after six months I suffered a failure so had the operation done again five weeks ago. The surgeon told me the internal stitches will not dissolve for extra strength. I now have two meshes in the area. I know these things can fail and I’ve heard of terrible pain stories on the internet. I say I’m confused though delighted that I haven’t had any of the pain associated with failure. Fingers crossed this lasts and post surgery pain on both occasions especially the second time was very limited.
@@thepatternforms859 no pain. Under the fading scar I can feel the edge of what's in there with my finger only but no issue to me. My surgeon was Mr Ragput Spire hospital Leeds. Fingers crossed it stays in place.
@@thepatternforms859 Hello.....update as requested Sadly it's failed but thankfully no pain. I'm waiting to see a surgeon but doubt I'll have it done again. There's a lot of pressure from within because of wind constipation and a month of caught and sneezes. After each operation I was very careful for six weeks slowly returning to normal activities.
I have an open full abdominal hernia repair in 5 days. I have had many abdominal surgeries and that is the cause of having several hernias all over my abdomen. Like I said, I have had at least 10 laparoscopic surgeries- some life threatening, but I am most scared about this one.
@@SURRYHILLSX Have you had Shouldice? Do you know if it's better than that new Desarda technique? It's difficult to find a lot of data on Desarda to make a comparison. Shouldice is a little far for me.
@@YourChannelOnRU-vid Have you found any new information about the Desadra technique? The doctor suggested me to use this technique, but there is not much information available about this technique and I am still undecided.
I had laproscopic operation before 4 week ago and now I'm feeling good I hope next month im complete normal as before my past life bt would like to say mesh is good option for hernia
I have mesh after a nick of the knife in a previous surgery, had to have a repair after that,iv been sick everyday since, an the pain to my stomach is so bad ,i never leave my house😢
I had hernia surgery back in November 2023, although I'm not feeling any pain I am however feeling some discomfort. I've noticed now I'm experiencing numbness on the left side of my stomach. Also there's like a red "ring" shape imprint around my belly button and the area at times feels very hot to the touch. My surgeon told me it's part of the healing process, as long as I'm not experiencing fever, vomiting, nausea or leaking I should be okay.
@knifeskill when you mention infection/bacteria working its way into the mesh as a possible difficult complication; are you referring to only post op or does this include the possibility of mesh infiltration by bacteria down the road, several years later from other sources of infection? Tia
have an epigastric hernia, I went to the hospital for 3 consecutive times, but the Dr there kept hesitating to repair because of high blood pressure, which arise during the time of operation. Is there any possibility or method whereby I can consider for this operation. My hernia size is 5_6cm.im from Papua New Guinea. I
any infos on biodegradable meshes, like gore bio-a? what timeframe for degradation is best for young, fit patients with a small hernia? i got mine from incorrectly using a lifting belt, so my coretissue is normally strong enough. just to make that clear.
Hi. I had a laprascopic inguinal hernia repair with mesh 3 weeks ago...I am still in a lot of pain. Pain from my right testicle into my groin. Also a shearing pain when I lean forward into my hip. Is this normal and will these pains go eventually, thank you Tony
I just had a umbilical hernia surgery on last Tuesday & I still feel somewhat muscle pain from the surgery I wouldn’t know if the mesh was bothering me I have discomfort here an there especially with moving a lot of
