Looks like the Opposed Twin runs as smooth as the V Twin. I guess years of experience taught you that widening those jets was the most common fix and how much for each. I'd love to have a Twin, but both of my lawn tractors came with Single OHV. Another great one, Don. Thanks

I have had quite a few of those engines over the years and I currently have two... One of which is that exact same machine. I had to replace the foam gasket on the throttle shaft on mine to get it to stop surging. Mine ran great until i hit a big bump which compressed the foam gasket which was rotten and that made it lean. The machine was a freebee so I was doing a bunch to it at the time anyways. What I love about those carbs is how easy that top comes off when I get water in the fuel, its an easy fix. Something to watch for when reinstalling the top of the carb is that the float can get jammed up and the fuel with over flow out of the carb when you start it, simply loosen the 4 screws and shift the top a little to get the float to be free moving.

A lot of times when my opposed twin Briggs surges at idle, I will go full throttle and then quickly throttle down while at the same time pulling the choke. This apparently creates a high vacuum and sometimes clears the jets. There can be another problem besides dirt in the jets, but this often works for me on various lawnmower engines. Thanks for the video.

That’s pretty cool about enlarging the Jets I think that’s from the EPA where they made Briggs make the Jets too small we’re trying to see if they environments what they think but when you make those big engines star for fuel, they don’t work very well so you got to give him the gas if they needed to keep them running Good job look forward to the next video.
@YesteryearGarage

Yea I find that a lot as well, especially with 2 stroke stuff. I’ve fixed so many little weedeaters and blowers by tweaking the H/L jets out 1/8-1/4 turn, problem is you gotta have a 21+ piece driver set to have a chance at having the correct one the adjust it with. They are set up on the cusp of being too lean to begin with that the second something changes, like the engine breaking in , it won’t run at all. This causes people to just throw them away every year or 2 and buy new. How good does that sound for the environment? Most of the stuff I’ve fixed has been “throwaway stuff” but it’ll definitely last more than 2 years
@80SWoods
@80SWoods Год назад
I’ve thought about the need for this when it likely ran fine for years since new until recently and I assume that these carbs are set from the factory at peak performance/efficiency and when the engine wears over time, the reduction in compression changes the amount of air and fuel sucked in from the carburetor so you have to richen it slightly to compensate.

I have this engine in my 1996 lawn tractor and I had the same issue 2 years ago. The problem was the hole between the fuelpump and the bowl was partially clogged. To check this, you have to remove the barrel with the float, and crank the engine and see if gas is squirting of the hole I also cleaned the rest of the carburetor. I don’t have that Walbro carburetor, I have the Nikki 6 which is similar but the pattern on the fuel pump cover is different in the Nikki 6 carburetor with 4 screw instead of 3. The tractor had run perfectly fine since I cleaned that hole. This engine is the best lawn tractor sounding engine ever.

Dony, I have been watching your repair videos for a month or so now and they are very educational, full of wisdom, and formatted in such a way that is really helpful with up close angles on what you are working on. Do you have any videos that show transaxle repairs or conversions? I would love to see videos on those and learn as I am currently working on a similar project myself. Respectfully, thank you.

I've the same engine, carburetor, craftsman mower and had a similar surging problem. Repeated jet and carb cleaning, replacement of the inline fuel filter, carb pump kit etc. nothing fixed the problem. Finally isolated the problem by drawing gas through a short length of gas line from a cup of gas and through the inline filter. Doing that, no more surging. Solution: The connection of the gas line to the gas tank located under the rear seat. The hose where it pushed onto the barb fitting of the gas tank was deteriorated and cracked. It didn't drip of leak gas in any obvious way but once I cut off that first inch of fuel line and reconnected it to the tank barb fitting the surging problem was eliminated. The cause? I assume that air was being sucked into the fuel line through the cracks around the barb fitting but I don't know that to actually be the reason. My doubt is that the fuel filter is transparent and I don't recall observing any air bubbles going through that filter. None the less, cutting off the section of bad hose on the tank barb fitting is the point when my surging problems ceased.

Do you see many of these engines up in Canada? I own 3 of them as they are one of my favorite small engines to have around. The carburetors leave a lot to be desired, but the Walbro can be retrofitted with full mixture adjustments which make it better to deal with. But the sound, torque and reliability are what make them great to have. Great video!

I'm in Ontario and this 21 HP opposed is the 1st of about 30 riders I have restored. Only bad thing I have read is that this engine only uses an oil splash type system so if I owned one I would use synthetic and always keep the oil level high for the upper piston.
@AtomicFallout757
@AtomicFallout757 11 месяцев назад
@@tommagiera4784 Yes, that is probably the biggest downfall of the B&S opposed twin. They did make a number of engines in the later years which used full pressure lubrication, but they are very rare and often bought up by those interested in these engines when they do come up for sale. If you're really lucky, you will find a 46 cubic inch, full pressure lubrication opposed twin (as most of them were 40-42ci with splash lubrication). I still hope to have one myself someday when the opportunity arises.

The first jet was the high speed jet...not the problem. Did the motor serge when it was new? If no, then why does the jet size need to be bigger? Seems to me that there is not enough fuel GETTING to the jet.
@jb8478
@jb8478 2 месяца назад
Yeah, I am actually confused by his wording. Is he actually enlarging the jets by barely drilling them out or was he just "enlarging" them by getting a small enough drill bit to unclog them? It looked like he just poked them down in the jet holes to free them up instead of actually drilling it, but then he did say you could use the air to blow out the shavings. Either way, you would be correct in saying it wasn't getting enough fuel.

Thank's Donny, my hesitation comes from fact this as been a great engine like you say , but in the last year it is hard to restart when hot. The motor is very clean for perfect airflow. I do have this surging problem which you've showed us how to fix. Some say my shaft could be slightly bent with the flywheel turning and hot can reduce the coil efficiency. My suggestion would be, before you open the jets with the top off, that you check/verify that the float level is correct. To me it seemed like it was. Also, putting the float at its upper/higher end of the spec can help it run better, and can be reversed if you don’t like how the engine runs.

Are there Chinese carburetors for this application that do have adjustment screws? Or are aftermarket carburetors banned from having adjustment screws?
@AtomicFallout757
@AtomicFallout757 Год назад
You can get aftermarket carburetors for these engines, however they use the newer "Nikki" design which does not have any mixture adjustment screws whatsoever. The older Walbro carburetors (such as the one featured in the video) can be easily retrofitted for full mixture adjustment, but doing so on the Nikki is more difficult and would probably require machining. It's unfortunate because the Nikki carburetor is a superior design otherwise, mainly due to it having a transfer slot for eliminating flat spots that the Walbro carburetors commonly suffer from when throttling up quickly.

@AtomicFallout757
@AtomicFallout757 Год назад
@@gadasavideos8564 The Nikki carburetors for the opposed twins use what people refer to as the "4 screw fuel pump" design whereas the Walbro uses the "3 screw fuel pump" design. The screw count refers to how many screws hold the fuel pump together at the front of the carburetor, making it easily identifiable as a Nikki or Walbro. You can see in the video, the tractor Don is working on has 3 screws on the fuel pump, indicating a Walbro. There are more differences between the two of course, but that is the giveaway.
