I purchased an after-market carb on eBay for my Westinghouse WH7000EC because the old carb was leaking gas. The old carb was not surging it ran fine. The new carb is surging, I watched your video and did everything you did, drained old gas, and installed new fresh gas 93 octane. Took the plastic screw and its 2 mating plastic parts out, used a wire carb brush, and flushed the carb with carb cleaner. I reinstalled everything only to find the surging did not get corrected. What do you suggest I do next?
Great job...I've been trying all I could for two months on a CAT 3600..no luck.. runs and surges.... wish this mechanic lived next door..I'm 97 years old and can't lift it to get it back to the store for service... any one in Naples Florida who can do this???
I bought my Honda 2000 used (barely) and it was surging on eco. On a whim I added some sea foam. I’m sold on it now. Ran it thru & have had 10 years of service since without even a hiccup.
Can you not just adjust the carb sometimes and or clean it? Are you saying a surging engine is always bad gas? Don’t intend to knock your opinion. I am not a pro just curious as I have worked on several small engines especially carbs. PS noticed you sad 90% of the time. My bad!
DANG! Generac with less than 70hrs total use, always surged and got tired and found this video. Fixed in 15 mins 😩. You got my like and subscription. 👏🏻
Had my champion 4500 open fram start surging at work....... Found this video and it cleared it right up. I just disconnected my spark plug and did the above repair. I did not drain the fuel.
I had the same problem with a lawnmower with bad gas. I got to get one of those pumps since it's a good price. Seems like those jets get clogged up fast even on mowers. I got to do that with my tractor cause it surges a little. Oh that sounds good. Thanks to you and your videos I am confident to take the carb apart. Thank you Andrew.
I've had a backup generator since the hurricanes of 2004 tried to move my FL home to Kansas. I've had to rely on it only twice since, but every year before hurricane season begins, I fill several gas cans, adding some Stabilizer and Marvel Mystery oil to the cans. I use "only" non-ethanol fuel. I'll put about a quart of fuel in the "empty" tank and run it until the engine quits, never leaving fuel in the tank. After nearly 20 years of mostly garage storage, it will start on 1-2 pulls every time. Any fuel not used by the end of hurricane season is emptied into my vehicles. No problems whatsoever.
Make sure your generator has an in-line fuel filter in the hose between the tank and carb. If not you can probably get one at Lowes or Home Depot. They're usually easy to install. Because the carburetor jets are so small, they clog up easily so having the gas filtered can save a lot of work. Most manufacturers don't include a gasoline filter. Why? Maybe they'll save .25 cents and make more money on service work?
WORKED OUT PERFECTLY , THANKS FOR SHARING , MY GENERATOR STARTED SURGING @ ABOUT 3 HOURS OF BREAK IN SO I WAS PISSED OF THINKING I HAD TO CLEAN THE ENTIRE CARBURETOR , EXCELLENT VIDEO KEEP THEM COMING !
@@RepairGang where I live, there's no such thing as "gasohol". It's just the regular Shell v power super unleaded premium or the Total excellium 95 and yep, these 2 brands have a decent shelf life of 6 months to a full year because they already contain additives. I use total excellium 95 for most part and it has a strong old school petrol smell.
Changing the fuel is what fixed it ... All the rest was a waste of time , surging is caused by a main fuel circuit lean .... Main jet is located in the float bowl ....
Good job! Always screw your idle air screw in until it stops and count the turns so it can be put back the same way, you don't want to run them too lean.
Idle screw has NOTHING to do with air fuel mixture!! It is an IDLE SCREW. You should ALWAYS set min and max RPM with an induction tach according to manufacture spec.
You can turn the idle screw "IN" before you remove it counting the turns it takes to seat it. Then after reinstalling it turn it all the way in till it seats then open it the same amount of turns it took to seat it before you removed it and it should be almost exactly where it was. Thanks for the video.
you are the man! I've dismantled and cleaned the carb jets multiple times in the past but this time I was stumped bc it was still surging.. you saved me so much aggravation with an easy fix... thank you👍🏼+1
Did the same as you and still surging somewhat. Now I cant wait to try this. I did not know that pilot screw has 3 holes, I cleaned 2, and the bottom hole was plugged but I thought that was by design, realize now I have to remove and clean that gunk stuck in there.
You don’t adjust the idle on a generator. There is no idle. The governor adjusts the engine RPM according to the load. The screw you were adjusting is only Used to hold down the pilot jet when the engine is used on a generator. The screw should only be turned in a few turns to keep the pilot jet in place. I learned this from James Condon on Utube. He is the generator guru.
In my case. Surging Honda GX 390 on a generator was surging only under 1/2 tank of gas. Tried solving it with new or even no gas cap, new fuel hoses, fuel filter, petcock, flushed gas tank, new Genuine Honda carb and even used aviation fuel. Still it would starve out near 1/4 tank and would only run while spraying starting fluid in the carb. Surging = Fuel Starvation, especially with less than half tank of fuel in my case, even when it was new. A generator runs at high speeds all the time requiring the highest of volume of fuel in the line at all times. Generators are designed to be low profile and an inherent flaw is that the fuel tank is (TOO LOW) just slightly above the carb fuel inlet for gravity feed through a hose. At high speeds and especially with little fuel in the tank causes a weak flow to the fuel inlet causing starvation/surging. MY SOLUTION: I discovered that by raising the entire fuel tank by 8" gave me MUCH better fuel flow down to the carb and the surging went away even with almost no fuel left in the tank. You can definitely see the difference (before and after) with a see-thru clear fuel filter which should always be at least 1/2 full during operation on a high speed motor/generator. Another mistake I made was storing Ethanol fuel for more than one season in my shed. The stuff goes bad and causes havoc on small engines. Periodically check the color of the stored fuel in a glass jar. It should be clear. If it is golden/urine colored, DONT USE IT in a small engine.. Car engines don't seem to have a problem with the aged fuel. I had about 20 gallons of yellow colored fuel and added a few gallons at a time to an almost full tank of gas in my car and it burned it with no problem. I hope this helps somebody as I almost gave up and it cost me $ and lots of time, but I won and learned a valuable lesson that nobody ever suggested to try.
7:10 - Adjusting the idle screw on a machine that never idles. Looks closely at that screw. It doesn't touch ANYTHING, since its purpose it to hold in that black plastic thing that sits on another jet. Horrible DESIGN. I know you did not design it. Don't know why everybody thinks they should adjust a screw that doesn't do anything.
Always use premium gasoline or Non Ethanol gasoline in combination with Stabil gasoline stabilizer. The ethanol in these gasoline gum up the jets and carb. It’s best to clean the carburetor bowl out while you’re at it. All the gum from the gasoline sits in there.
I have had bad experience but it's anecdotal evidence. I'm pretty sure if a customer followed the instructions it probably be a good idea, but that's okay. We're allowed to disagree
just run the gen out of gas to shut it down no need for premium or to add anything its worked for 30 years heck i use a gen 4 hours a week every week to power my water pump the gen is a 1998 model sold in 1999 and still purrs like a kitten ive opened the carb 1 time in 23 years 1 time
@repairGang: If your generator does not have the auto idle, sometimes called economy mode, then turning the “idle” screw will have no effect on idle adjustment. It didn’t look like your generator has the auto idle feature, but I may be wrong as I couldn’t see the whole front panel. The screw you were turning, on a non auto idle is to hold the jet (the small black tube you were cleaning) in the carburetor.
My fingers are getting tired of having to explain why this happens. First and foremost, stop using gasoline with ethanol. Use what is called 'rec' gas or recreation gas that is usually 89 or 90 octane. I usually buy 5 gallons each season and add 2 1/2 ounces of stabilizer to use it for the snowblower, lawnmower, power washer, chipper/shredder, generator. A gallon of that is used to mix with 2 cycle oil for the trimmer, chain saw and blower. The 4 cycle engines all have fuel shut off valves with exception of the power washer. Ever time I run those machines I turn off the fuel just as I am finishing with them to empty the carb of fuel. The power washer has a drain valve pin cock on the bottom of the carb float bowl. Never ever leave fuel in the carb for more than 60 days. Especially if you use 10% ethanol fuel. Ethanol hardens fuel lines and clogs emulsion tubes and needle valves in 4 cycle carbs. On 2 cycle engines, it hardens fuel lines and destroys carb diaphragms, metering and/or pumping and fuel filters. These little procedures take no time at all to do and what time it does take is well spent eliminating the issues the guy in the video had with his generator. If he would taken the carb off, he would have found jet holes and the holes in the emulsion tube clogged just enough to cause the 'surging'. extended storage with ethanol can make a mess. Usually means buying a carb kit or new carb. I recommend spending the little extra on the fuel cost so as to not have to rebuild stuff and when you do need the engine to run, it will run the way it is suppose to run. enough said.
I have a brand new duromax running rough on propane and gas. Non ethanol. If I hold the auto choke lever further open further than it’s auto position it goes away. Is there an adjustment for that?
Friendly suggestion: stop dropping the pump or gas cap on the ground. It can pick up a few grains of sand or dirt and then get dropped right into the gas can or tank.
Dude, that's the quickest fix I've ever had to an engine problem. My generator is not too old - maybe 4 to 5 years, but I still try and start it every 3 months or so and let it run for a while just to keep the carb sort of fluid and fresh inside. Still, it developed the surging issue; found it when I started it yesterday just for maintenance. I had it running straight again within 5 minutes just by following what you did. Well. almost. The carb cleaner never would exit the jet on it's own. I had to clean the jet with a wire first to get it to come out, so it was clogged pretty good. Thanks for the help. Good job on the video.
good video. watched after I spent 2 hours searching for that damn pilot jet. had to take it off completely and clean all the passages whit a thin iron wire. now it's works like new
I got myself a new Dual fuel Carburetor yesterday and it was a nightmare to install (because the frame was in the way) after removing the engine from the frame , installing new carb back on the frame . My generator wont run, neither on LPG or Petrol, it starts but cut off within a minute the sound was like yours at the beginning . Petrol is new and so is the carburetor
When you used the brush to clean out (?), your hand covered up what you were doing, so that was of no value. Also, the orfice that controls the fuel is inside the small black tube you removed from the carb, running parallel to the length of the tube. Carb cleaner probably won't remove the blockage...you have to run a very thin wire or mini drill bit inside the little tube to clean it out. Very important step you left out!
So you're saying you're still surging change the spark plug? Check your gaskets you might have to take off the carburetor all the way and fully deep clean it
I had the very same issue on my 10K watt generator. Watched your video and did exactly what you demonstrated and it is up and running just like new. Thank you for sharing this!
@@RepairGang i had the same problem with my generator reving up and down but mine did it after it got clean up just like you did , before it dint start up at all and was puring out gas whenever i try to start pulling the rope , any reason why any help whould be great
Hi. my petrol generator Generator Model# SPG 8500E2 starts then dies after few seconds. I can accelerate but will die. There is a lot of black smoke too. When I am starting it makes noises like it is shooting (I think it calls backfire). I have got the Inlet & outlet valves changed. Can you help to give me some light to find out what could be? Please let me know your Facebook so we can chat there but I will add the info here too to support you. Thank you so much!
Hello. My older Coleman generator (5hp tecumseh) recently had a new carb installed and still surges when not under a heavier load. Would adjusting the idle jet help? Or can the governor be adjusted somehow? Thanks.
That screw you took out is your JET SET SCREW. Unless you have an inverter generatot, this screw sets your rpm of your engine. The rpm speed of the engine determines the cycles per second (hertz or frequency) of your generator head. In the US we have 60 hz, Europe is 50 hz. If you do not have a frequency meter you should start by turning this screw in all the way while counting the turns to get back to a ball rpm speed when you reinstall it.
Put some SEA FOAM in your gas tanks . Wonderful stuff , eliminates water , stabilizes the gas and cleans gum out of carbs . Once got an OLD Snow blower , badly neglected . Poured SEA FOAM into a dry gas tank to pull it thrue the carb and it started and ran...on only SEAFOAM ! Years later , that motor is still running trouble free ! Ontario Canada .
I've often seen the surging due to water in the fuel bowl temporarily shutting off fuel flow into the main jet. Remove the bottom fuel bowl center screw, drop the bowl, clean-out the bowl and reassemble. Lucas Ethanol gasoline treatment works great, green bottle/color, add to regular gas. Nice job on the video, quick and to the point.
@@RepairGang everybody has an opinion but i have proof with equipment and vehicles to back up my opinion. Jeopardise your equipment and your viewers mine will run proper when needed. Have a good life .
Thanks!!! For anyone who found theirselves in the situation, if you intend to store it for "next time" be sure to run fuel with Stabil added for a few minutes, then empty the tank, run it untjl it stalls, then drain the float bowl. Lastly after the engine cools remove the spark plug, squirt a tablespoon or so of 2 stroke oil in the cylinder, crank a bit, then replace the plug. Now when you try to get it going next time, it should work.
Sadly my familys own generator has been neglected SO MUCH, but the thing runs anytime we need it to...old old fuel, rarely used ect. I fix them at my job and see how they get bad real fast. 95% of it is old gas.
I just went through a hurricane in Florida central Florida Polk county Florida to be exact. Lost 50% of my roof. I would just like to say I was watching some RU-vid videos and this video popped up it just so happen to be the exact same generator that I was using and the same problem I really appreciate it tomorrow morning I’m going to go out and see if I can fix it the generator work but all it did for about 12 hours every day with surge up and down up and down. It did work and it did run it just surged. Videos like this are very helpful I really appreciate them thank you very much and thank you for all your help ❤
I'm really sorry you lost in the hurricane. I feel bad for the people who survived the hurricane. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and I hope you get your generator running
I've got the 7500/9500 with 2900 hrs on it lol, dont know their lifespan, on 2nd set of brushes, "fuel pump" is out so i just gravity feed it, its been little rough lately, i shall do this! Most small carbs do that crap cause cheap gas with ethanol. They wanted me to take it, all 200+lbs of it to idk...been a mechanic 40yrs. One review guy said he got parts under warranty, ill see.
Thank you for the information on where the high speed jet is located. Put on a brand new carburetor and it was still surging. Drilled out the jet with the next size up drill bit and now runs smooth. I liked the old days when these mixture adjustments were out in the open and not hidden and fixed.
Thank you, you just saved me a big repair bill, plus transport. I have a generator just like yours, that stopped running after only 10 hours of operation. I could not even find a repair shop willing to take it in, the only shop in the area listed for warranty repairs did not do that anymore.. Did not even know it was called "surging", until last week. A common problem, apparently. Then I found this clip, I did what you said, and now it runs perfectly. Thank You!
It didn't work, I screwed it in before removing it like the one comment sajested. Spray it. Will do it again, and this time, put a filter in between. Like someone here sajested.
No sense fooling with the 'idle' screw. That engine never idles as it is a fixed speed unit and always runs at the governed speed. If it didn't, the electricity it generates would have a variable voltage.
Thanks! This worked out perfectly. I used it on my Powerstroke 5000. Don't know what caused it because I only ran it twice in 3 years. I replaced the fuel added a cleaner and preservative and followed your instruction and smooth running. Thanks again.
Word to the wise. Don't use ethanol gas in anything that will set for a long time, as it will separate from the gas and foul your carburetor. Use ethanol free gas instead. Also if you have a tank valve on the machine, turn it off and let the engine run dry of gas to shut it off to drain gas out off carburetor then shut off the off switch. This will help keep the carburetor clean for future use. If you are using 2 stroke engines be sure to drain the 2 stroke fuel after use, as it will gum up carburetor if stored for too long.
Absolutely put it in you auto or truck they burn a thousand times hotter than a little Briggs & Stratton put put engine and its mixing with the fresh gas in you tank.
my 8000 watts generator runs and lights the whole house but when i put on electric stove to cook it surges every 2 minutes or so. and the lights flickers around house.. unlike yours that surges the minute you put it on , any suggestion. oh and i am only using about 3000 watts..
Hello, I have black max 3600, left some old gas in it, other day I tried to start and it wouldn't start so I took the carburetor out and cleaned it, put it back, put some new gas in it and I was able to started . Issue i am having, when I push the choke all the way from start to run it surge like you had it in the beginning of the video but if I bring the choke halfway like in the middle between start and run and it runs without surge. Any thoughts? Thank you very much!
Take off and make sure gaskets are on the right way cuz they're easy to put on backwards or put on wrong way. Also make sure they're not cracked. I'm pretty sure if you check the gaskets you probably got one flipped. Still fits backwards but it doesn't work right. So if you flip it, you'll be fine. Good to go
@@RepairGang okay so I ended up doing exactly what you did in this video, fixed the issue I was having but the problem is now, when I put load on.. it surge again... I am gona try to mess with carburetor, check the gasket like u mentioned.
Hello can you make a video step by step close up how to remove and install new carburetor on a westinghouse wgen 9500df generator, picked up new unit but carburetor was removed and no exact service manual how to fully remove and install new unit with the auto choke assembly ! Would love some help - westinghouse has poor service and no service tech in Phoenix AZ area Thanks Edward
Thanks for teaching me about that idler screw but, first five minutes of your running will be the fuel that’s in your carburetor bowl! Would’ve been better to have during that out as well…
That small plastic jet is the exact same on the uh...well they're called Gx390s ect, but little All Purpose Honda Engines, same carburator. You can clean the whole thing, even if its super nasty, but that small little plastic jet with the BABY small opening? Yeah that's the problem. Had one that surged even after a carb clean. I didn't know (for a minute) there was a small opening, poked a little wire through and then it ran like gold.
Yeah those Honda pilot jets. They do clog up up and they're so thin. It's hard to get anything to poke through them. I found a nice set of micro drill bits that I use just for those bad boys
When i released the gas from the carburetor, it was looking too gold, i drained it and it was nice as it should be, but it starts and dies, can it be the jet clogged up?
