It could depend where the side of the mountain was. Most places in the UK ban campfires and wild camping......but yes, I realise you were being theoretical.
@@HowardOfficialA lot of parents claim their autistic children will only eat the major brands but sometimes you wonder if they're projecting, or at least how the kid randomly reached the conclusion that they must only have branded products.
The skin on my dear old Mum's homemade rice pudding was amazing, and only bested by watching the muppets on a Sunday evening with fried up Sunday dinner leftovers😋
Glad to see you are recovering well. First time I made rice pudding,I thought I hadn't put enough rice in so added a little more. When it was cooked and mum put spoon into it...the whole lot lifted out of the dish... you could of filled a pot hole in the road with it. Needless to say I know better now than my 14yr old self did😊
In the late 70s, I worked in a CoOp creamery in the middle of Wales. We made butter, cream, evaporated milk, powdered milk and rice pudding. We made rice pudding to about 6 or 7 different recipes for different retailers. The higher quality puddings with the premium label, such as Ambrosia, had more rice and less sugar. The lower quality had more sugar than rice. All made in the same factory. The marketing would have you believe that these things are made by the retailers, but it's not the case. The main difference is price!
I worked in a fruit and veg canning factory and we canned fruit and veg for a number of different retailers. If we ran out of peas for example for one retailer we would take the labels off another retailer and relabel the tins. My wife worked for a well known pie factory and they did the same with the pies.
@@cindy5562 all kinds of things, peas carrots, beans, fruit such as peaches apples, pears, cherries, mangos, apricots, and all different types of jams. The company was Goldhanger fruit farms in Tiptree Essex.
Aldi is the best thing that has happened in British retailing in the last 50 years from the point of view of consumers. When they came to these shores British supermarkets had the highest mark up in the world. Aldi and Lidl have kept them honest.
@@jontalbot1 I have seen Asda doing price comparisons to Lidl.. I mainly shop in the Lidl, bear me or Aldi.. Asda is as near as lidl but very little I buy there.. I hate the self service for the higher prices I pay..
@@soniaclarke1171 I never understood price match. Why would I go to your supermarket because youre offering the same price as my favourite supermarket?
I like mine straight out of the fridge, never mind spoiling it by heating it up. I was brought up on Ambrosia because I don't think anyone else made it. My mum did make her own and it always had the most marvellous skin on it. These day, I would go with the Aldi version. I used to sprinkle a little brown sugar on mine when I was a kid, but these days it a bit of jam.
My mam used to insist on heating it up - but refused to buy more than one tin - realising that it was not enough, she would then, in a bid to make it go further, go to the sink and then proceed to douse it in copious quantities of Northumbria’s finest council pop! She did the same thing with other tinned “milk pudding” products - sago, semolina, tapioca, macaroni (yes, you used to get sweet macaroni before macaroni cheese was a thing) - only bought one tin of the product in question and added water to it, as “It makes it go further!”. Did the same thing with spaghetti-type products, ravioli and even beans in tins - and don’t get me started on her tinned soup! I like those things cold as well - tin to bowl to mouth! Best with jam in - wonder what it would be like with Nutella?
What could be better than a tin of rice pudding for lunch? - Two tins of rice pudding. Personally - I do prefer the Aldi rice pudding. Ambrosia has got too sweet. Grated nutmeg on rice pudding is good.
My nan had a little jar in her cupboard that contained about 5 or 6 nutmegs. She only ever used one of the nutmegs that had s slanted edge from where it had been grated. Half a nutmeg lasted her about 10 years look!
@@Juliukas101 Not quite sure how that is possible, I go through a LOT more nutmegs. Essential ingredient for white sauces and above all mashed potatoes!
@@gustavmeyrink_2.0 Yeah she only used to grate a little bit. I've never thought about using nutmegs until just now and that memory just popped up in my mind! I remember the local bakers used to do custard tarts with ground nutmeg and I can still imagine the smell and taste in my mind.
Hello Gareth 👋 glad you are feeling better now hope your family are keeping well, sending you all love and prayers 🙏 God bless you all including your Mum and Dad .
I’m allergic to milk so haven’t had rice pudding for a long time. I must try making it again with a plant based milk. My favourite way is baked in the oven, egg yolk whisked into it, a layer of jam, meringue on top and then finished off in the oven to cook the meringue. Gorgeous! 😋😋😋
Hi Gaz, hope everything is going well. Yeah I always get the Aldi rice pudding, nice with a tablespoon of strawberry jam. Being on a tight budget it’s a no brainer for me. Hope you get back to 100% soon pal.
lovely to see you Gareth, doing the tastings. Wishing you every success in beating the alcohol. It isn't easy when we have addictions. Mine is chocolate. I dont cause anyone harm but myself.
I used to shop at Morrisons all the time but in recent years, they have become very expensive. A recent survey showed that they are the most expensive main-stream supermarket of the lot!
If you buy from ALDI make sure you get this brand. They do a cheaper one as well but it’s very watery. Ps. My ALDI reopened today after a complete makeover. So smart and tidy, well done.
When they first came to the UK it was literally pile it high and keep it cheap as that is what the German stores are like. Germans don’t care what it looks like but Brits do. A lot of people will not go into a shop they don’t like the look of. Retailers say we are the Italians of North Europe. Aldi have done a brilliant job of adapting to British tastes and that is why the stores are now a lot more attractive.
Ambrosia Devon Custard is another one thats shot up in price during the last couple of years; I find Aldi's custard is basically more or less the same taste wise and a lot cheaper in price. Only negative for me is that Ambrosia do the pots and Aldi's comes in cartons.
Clubcard prices are for those that don't mind giving Tesco all their info for them to use and sell on to third party's. I had a Clubcard for a few years but the only info they had that was me was the address everything else was fake. When I moved address I didn't bother with updating the card details and they probably send letters to the address I used to live at back in 2008/10.
Not a rice pudding eater -- haven't had it in a dog's years at least -- so my standards are suspect. Because of that, this is something I would have to make from scratch, with a real vanilla pod and a cinnamon stick. Boiled sultanas.
Last few ambrosia cans i have had seemed more watery and undercooked compared to how it used to be, they seemed to have cheapened it...deffo not like it used to be
Rice pudding tinned was always a treat as we were rolling across the German countryside, sausages tinned in the BV in preparation for the evening park up.
You could have made a big pan full for that price Gareth . Pity you don't live near me in Hull ,I would have made you some lovey . Any news on your jaw yet ❤❤❤❤
Cheers Gaz 👍 you had me at a dollop of jam with rice or semolina 🤤😋 What a difference in the price though 😮 but mum's is the best 👍 Have a wonderful evening Gaz and family ❤
We like it cold with some tinned fruit (minus any of the tin juice - drink that separately lol). Lovely treat. Thanks Gareth, so glad you're getting there chum 👍.
I went through a phase where I'd stir in a cadburys flake while heating it, talk about a calorie bomb and no wonder I'm type 2 now 😂😂 Got an own brand from an Irish supermarket a few months back and all I can say is the cats loved it.👹 Great money saving review Gareth. I'll go England 3 Switzerland 1. At least some of us Irish shouting for our neighbours 👊👊
The funny thing is Gareth I could never stand home made rice pudding but I could sit with a can of Ambrosia and a spoon and eat the whole lot no problem, good video big pal
Blooming heck it’s been years since I’ve had rice puddin, definitely a big heap of strawberry jam or lemon curd. I remember my brother putting Nutella in his (heathen 😂) Cheers Gaz 👍🏼🇬🇧🇬🇧
Good to see you back on the road to recovery could you consider M&S hot chicken curry in a tin once you are fully healed tried this myself and was quite impressed for a tinned curry.
Hi Gareth. It’s nice to know you getting a lot better now, but bloody Nora £2.00 from Morrisons compared from the other main shops . Another great video, definitely get some Aldi rice pudding. Regards mark
I do love your honest reviews Gareth. I must try the Aldi rice pudding with some jam in it. It looked very tasty. Every penny counts these days. Thanks so much 🙏
Good to see you're finding foods to review....do prefer a homemade rice pudding with a skin ontop, but these aren't too bad....the tin ones got to be warm personally 😋 glad to see your on the mend.... hopefully you'll be munching on a juicy steak soon 👍
I've only had home made rice pudding. I've always put raisins in it. And I'm pretty sure it was at least 70% rice. I'm thinking I put eggs in it. The last time I made it I was in my mid 20's. I'm 67 now.
Tinned is quite nice but really not the same thing. As others have said nutmeg on top is good and raisins is a good idea. For variation you can add coconut milk
Ambrosia do a Traditional Rice Pudding that has sultanas and nutmeg in it, that might be worth a try if you get a craving for it. I will say that the 9% rice is because it’s put into the tin raw, so it’s 9% of the volume of the can is uncooked rice that then cooks and swells through the retort process in the can and takes (if memory serves me correctly) around an hour and twenty minutes to come up to temperature, cook and cool down enough for the cans to be handled/labelled.
My mum used to make rice pudding in a Pyrex dish back in the day! I've always grown up with ambrosia but this is your 2nd comparison vlog for me (first was weetabix one) where I have now been converted 👍
Tesco's Stockwell Rice Pudding costs 25p. Don't shake the can before opening, pour some of the liquid out to thicken it up and bingo! If I've got an aerosol can of whipped cream on the go I'll add some of that, mix it up before heating and EUREKA! It's as good as any similar product in my opinion.
Anbrosia used to be the best tinned rice in the 70s, it tasted like it had carnation milk mixt in it now its a bit like your Fray Bentos pies gone down hill!!😊
hi Gaz from down south. when it comes to Ambrosia you are paying for the name as its long established. our Tesco sells it and seems to do quite well, just depends where you are at the time shopping
*Sweet Review ‼️🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻* Pardon the pun lol Cook hack tip for you- there’s nothing like homemade. Well, get a few cheap tins and a tin of evaporated milk, bit of extra sugar optional and put it all together in a dish and put it in the over- allowing for the skin to form on top. A very good cheaty way to have the taste of homemade
I think that’s a no brainier to go for the cheaper one, they both look similar. I love my rice pudding cold with a we blob of jam thanks for the review ❤
Please try the aldi posh jam, it is absolutely beautiful especially the raspberry, the only problem is getting hold of it, as it comes in mixed boxes of raspberry strawberry and blackcurrent, all of which are good, but raspberry goes fastest, so sometimes you have to search.
I've tried a few of the cheaper brands and if I don't try to compare them to Ambrosia, they are fine. I haven't found one yet that is as creamy as Ambrosia but still acceptable. I've started making my own rice pudding in my slow cooker and it's lovely, nicer than I used to make before.
Never mind the Aldi one, I buy the Morrisons Basics Rice Pudding for 25p and it is spot on 👌I've been pedantic enough to weigh it out of curiosity, and it was 380g and not the 400g on the can, though I know that is approximate, but I don't hold that against it! Sometimes the basics stuff can be pretty good, though I wouldn't recommend the Morrisons Basics custard 😬
Never been a massive rice pudding fan, traumatic Grammar School dinners probably the reason. That said, the review tempts me to try the Aldi product. New Aldi literally opens today in my town. Just opposite Lidl.
Good review, rice pudding is the ultimate comfort food for me, if I ever compile a list of 'last meals', it would be in there somewhere. My mum used to do hers in a loaf tin in the oven and it spooned out very dry, almost like a cake, over which you poured milk and sprinkled sugar. The rice pudding in school was a different beast altogether, more like the tinned stuff, but lovely in its own way. It looks like there's very little compromise for the Aldi one here, for half the price.
(793) I prefer to make mine, about 20 minutes before its done pour in a big slop of Drambuie and a bunch of sultanas. Little kids put jam on rice pudding.
Haha, I just came home from a shopping trip to Aldi and I'd bought two tins of their rice pud. What you need to try is their Dessert Menu custard in the 500g packs. Someone else did a comparison of that and voted it the best. I always have some in stock!
Hi Gareth, So lovely to see you looking well & I bet you are beginning to feel better from the inside to the outside side 👍Thanks for the taste test I am 100% with you Aldi, first time but for me the only way to eat rice pudding is cold all the best Lin 👍🙂
Ambrosia has always been dear compared to other brands even there custard is more expensive than the original Birds custard( I know that is in a packet but you cannot buy a tub of custard powder and still save money) thanks fir the review I know where I will be going to get my rice pudding.
Check the origin ovil if it's GB DE002 then from the Ambrosia factory in Devon I have that on a tin of Tesco Stockwell!!! I have also had Lidl with the GB DE002 code Ambrosia has more cream. Best regards from Devon🐮🐮
