Many, many years ago, I worked for a lady who's brother sent her sassafras root which she kept in a pot of hot water all work day. We drank that tea. Loved it. That was 53 years ago. 😂

I remember drinking sassafras tea in my childhood. My sister's godparents had a farm in Kentucky.y dad was stationed at Fort Knox and we would go visit on the weekends. I learned to pick tobacco, drive a tractor, slop the hogs, and gather chicken eggs. I would pull cobs of dried corn from the caged silos and give it to the horses. We would go to the back barns of the farm to see the hundreds of white turkeys they raised for the market. Those birds were loud! Great memories.

Here in Louisiana we grind the Sassafras Tree leaves into a filé powder (pronounced feelay) to make filé for our gumbo. We also collect some of the roots to make root beer. I can’t believe y’all have some growing wild. Lucky you. I bet freeze drying the leaves would make it much easier to make filé ( feelay) powder.

Jason or Brooke, get in the habit of when you go to town and buy hardware items to get (2) bolts of different sizes. They just slide in your pocket. Come home and place in a jar on your work bench. It will save you over the long run. My grandfather would save glass [big] pickle jars. And when he died, he had at least 3000 bolts, nuts, and screws of different sizes. And he had a pickle jar of belts and gaskets as well. He would get so mad if he had to run to town for something that broke. It's worked for me as well over the years.

Cut you some sassafras roots 5-6inches long. Wash it like you would vegetables and put it in a pot to boil. You can store the roots in the freezer in a zip lock bag. Add sugar and let it steep a bit covered. Then drink it. Taste like rootbeer!!!! I like to pour it over ice. You can freeze dry the leaves then blend up. You then have the herb file' is good to sprinkle sparingly on gumbo .Y 'all are blessed to have it on your land!!
