@George Job King Kenneth MacAlpin reigned from 843 to 858, so he's 9th century, not 6th. It wasn't only the English who never conquered Scotland, the Romans, the Vikings and the Normans failed to conquer Scotland too. The Romans built two walls to keep the Picts and Scots out of their Empire, Hadrian's wall between the Solway Firth and the River Tyne, and The Antonine Wall between The Clyde and The Forth rivers. The Scots invited the Normans into Scotland, possibly the start of The Auld Alliance between Scotland and France.

I think you might be confusing the Union of the Crowns 1603 with the Act of Union 1707 whereby the parliaments of England and Scotland combined and met in London. Separate and different events.
@ymg8057
@ymg8057 2 года назад
@@maconescotland8996 Exactly. James the 6th was offered the English, as well as the Scottish throne, which he already held, in 1603, on the death of Elizabeth the 1st of England, when she died childless, owing to him being descended from Henry the 7th of England. He was keen to bring about a union of the Scottish and English parliaments at the time also, but both parliaments were opposed to it back then. In 1707, at the time of the Act of Union (union between the Scottish and English parliament's) Queen Anne was on the throne, though monarchs now did not have the same power as a century earlier, when the Union of the Crowns had happened. I won't go into all the stories about possible/probable bribery of members of the Scottish parliament, to vote for a union. However, I seem to remember that the Earl of Mar, who led the 1715 Jacobite rebellion, had earlier been one of the biggest supporters of the Act of Union. This was the largest Jacobite rebellion to take place on mainland Britain, though I'm not sure if the one in Ireland, in the late 17th Century wasn't larger. People however see the Jacobite rebellions, as being about freeing Scotland from English rule, when they were dynastic struggles, had some support in England, the largest rebellion may have been in Ireland and by the 1745 one anyway, most Scots seemed to be opposed to the Jacobites, despite them seemingly becoming synonymous with Scotland, since then. (You just have to look at how tiny the 1745/46 Jacobite army was, compared to the Scottish Covenanting army a century earlier, which fought Oliver Cromwell in the 1650's! Many, of whose descendants incidentally, were the sort of Scots most likely to be anti Jacobite!)

The Unicorn is the national animal because in olden times they didn't see it as a pink girly animal. it was seen as a wild and un-tamable beast. It is shown in old coat-of-arms with a chain around it's neck because without that it was thought it would basically kill everything nearby. It was chosen because it was though to be the one animal that would kill a Lion which was on the English coat of arms.

Glasgow (Scotland) was also the first place to recognise a proper police detective. Not one that patrolled the streets, but one that Investigated crimes by garnering evidence, which would eventually be used in convicting criminals. This would then be used as inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. It also has the first person to be attributed to the mental health act (insane), which would later become Known as The McNaughton Rule.

Einstein called Scotsman Jame Clark Maxwell a genius. Maxwell's equations paved the way for Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity. Maxwell’s work was the basis for quantum mechanics & ultimately the modern theory of the structure of atoms and molecules. James Clerk Maxwell, born in Edinburgh, gave the world the theory and name of Electromagnetism. Maxwell predicted the existence of radio waves, discovered that electricity travels at the speed of light, and unified electricity and magnetism through his equations. Maxwell's achievements paved the way for radio, television and electronics. Astrophysicist Carl Sagan said "Maxwell's equations have had a greater impact on human history than any ten presidents."

Ireland is not in the United Kingdom. Most Irish people feel that being called part of the UK is a bit insulting. We are an independent, sovereign republic. The six-counties of the north of Ireland remains a colony of the UK. They call it the UK but people in Ireland know it's part of Ireland even though the British pretend it is somehow naturally different to the rest of the country which it has been a part of forever. Incidentally, I am Irish and I lived in Scotland for a year, some years ago. It's a magnificent and interesting country with fantastic people. Us Irish do feel a certain affinity with the Scots on a lot of things, but we are not British unlike our Celtic cousins in Scotland, all to do with history. We were a colony, they weren't. We are a republic, they have a monarchy. Outside of those things we're always happy to be in their company enjoying similar cultural ties.

Unicorns and lions hate each other, and it's said that a unicorn could always beat an elephant (where those two would meet, I have no idea, but that's the folklore), so it's pretty safe to say it could beat a lion. Also, dipping its horn into poisoned water would purify it. They chose an animal that is powerful and protective.
@roosterbooster6238

Tom Kenney the unicorn isn’t an animal it is a heraldic mythical beast like griffins / dragons etc.

Independent Scotland would have about 90% of the oil fields and 40% of the gas fields in the UK sector of the North Sea, and ALL of the oil to the continental shelf to the west. We have the biggest fisheries in the EU, and land 60% of the UK catch. Our whisky industry makes up 25% of the UK food and drinks income. We also make most of the gin.

surprising fact about scotland number 55 is we are almost split down the middle about independence or not,even the people who say no think there doing the best for scotland,,its how the media treat scotland thats the biggest thing,,,,,there is many smaller countries that thrive,but in scotland we are told,,we are too small,,,its nonsense but as time goes by we are realising we dont need masters from london,,we need good neighbours
