Surprising truths about legalizing cannabis | Ben Cort | TEDxMileHigh

In 2012, Colorado legalized cannabis and kickstarted a multibillion dollar industry with every product imaginable -- brownies, gummy bears, granola bars, even lube! But to say that we’ve “legalized cannabis” is mistaken -- we’ve commercialized THC. In this fascinating talk, expert Ben Cort examines the impacts of this growing new industry on everything from policing & arrest rates to LGBTQ issues. Sober since 1996, Ben Cort has seen the devastation that substance abuse can bring first hand as well as the joy that is recovery. He spent the last 10 years inside nonprofit drug treatment and education programs like Phoenix Multisport, Stout Street Foundation, and The University of Colorado Hospital. He is the author of Weed, INC., a professional speaker, and a frequent guest in the media. Ben is a husband, father of three, and an avid sportsman. He enjoys fly fishing, hunting, mountaineering, and bike racing. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The flaw that negates most of what he said: it is unimportant whether weed is 1% or 99% THC because people want to get only so high. All that high potency weed/etc does is require the user to consume less for the same effect. Basically, this guy assumes that EVERYONE who uses THC wants to nearly obliterate their brains with COLOSSAL levels of consumption of the stuff. That's like saying that everyone who drinks any alcohol wants to get totally, completely hammered, every time. High potency weed is a good thing because it means we don't have to have as many inputs (soil, fertilizers, pesticides, electricity, etc) in order to get X level of output (in the form of being high). It also means that people who consume THC via smoking will inhale less smoke for the effect they desire. I have yet to see anyone address this.

Drank alcohol pretty much every day for 7 years,now a little over 4 months no alcohol. Cannabis has really helped me with that. I filed in heavy to Cannabis after quitting because I had not used it in 5 years and with all the newness around legalization in my state, it was exciting. But I hit a wall and noticed in cutting back on cannabis. Not wake and baking, smoking less and mainly only in the evening. I can see myself only using a few days a week and on weekends soon and then just a few times a week. I'm ok with that and I'm so much happier and healthier. I can't take back those 7 years lost in a cloud, but I can look forward. 34 is not the youngest, but certainly not too old!

I eat an edible and drink tequila almost every day! Oh yeah, and seafood! Today I got high, walked in the over 100 degree weather and ate the biggest shrimp burrito I have ever seen! Made my Mexicans, of course! Life is what you make of it and if people want to get high and drink alcohol, that is the poison that makes them happy. Everybody is allowed to do whatever they want. Some people want to sober up and some people are happy as alcoholics. My uncle drinks every day and he's happy even though his eyesight is failing because of the poison. But yeah, that's why people tell you to pick your poison.

I have been an occasional pot smoker for 49 years. Based on my experience pot is not nearly as dangerous as alchohol, cigarettes, or even sugar. A pot smoker is more mild mannered than a drinker. If I had to choose between a alchodrinker and a smoker to drive me home I would choose the pot smoker. I think the laws against pot have been a travesty of justice and reprehensible. When alcohol came off prohibition law enforcement decided that pot was going to be targeted because minorities used it and it was competition for the alchohol industry. Religion called it the devil's weed. The tobacco industry blatantly lied about the benefits of tobacco. The over consumption of sugar causes more health problems than pot.

What we need is good regulation. It seems no one wants to regulate, they just want to legalize. I started using cannabis when I was 27, last year. Still not a daily user, still not causing problems for me. I just think that it's counter productive to punish me for this. Taking away my job and drivers license (if I were to get caught) isn't gonna make me strive to be a "better person" in the eyes of society, it will ruin me.

It's not pots fault the dispensaries are in "low income" neighborhoods and "located near the poor" when dispensaries first emerged they could be any place and they were! Then came zoning! And 95 percent of cities zoned them out!! The only cities here in Michigan now thanks to these zoning ordinances, are yes the more run down ones! Probably because the city could really use the funds, unfortunately more prominent neighborhoods don't "need" the money and zone it out! Trust me dispensaries have no issues opening in more shall I say "high class" towns! I'm sure prefer it! But unfortunately it's not allowed! And that isn't some persons scheme to get rich from the poor! Those people don't control the city ordinances, I'm sure they who ever they are would love to price gouge "rich city's" here in Michigan it's zoned out of everywhere except the big major city's (which yes have low income people's) catch 22 here damned if you do damned if you don't!

THC is a succesful pain reliver, reduces inflammation which can help people with arthritis and other conditions, reduces some of the pain and nausea from chemotherapy, stimulates appetite which can help with certain eating disorders and chemo, is generally more safe and less addictive than alcohol, far less risky than opiods in treating pain, THC can also trigger apoptosis (cell sucide) in cancer cells,THC removes amyloid beta protein from the brain which is a neurotoxin that builds up and leads to neurodegeneration in Alzheimer patients, and who knows what else? Anyone that finds out something to exist based on an add or if you find something ls appealing based on its advertisement this is normal but anyone that can believe what an advertiser says is dangerously naive. Anyone that tries a product without verifying the facts and statistics first is doomed to a life of being totally controlled by corporations. Anyone that can be swayed by propaganda they did not verify is doomed by their own stupidity and mental weakness under all circumstances. Information that is given to you by someone making any corner of profit of of an item or service should only introduce you to a product but it is a moron beyond endless stupidity that believes such info without verifying facts via other sources.

Then, I have chosen to use a product that is pre-made, and pre-packaged like almost everything else in our world. Nobody is forcing me to buy their product. The true corruption in the selling or distribution of any product comes from the criteria of the consumer. We should you even drink moonshine on occasion if it's 75% alcohol? The less amount of alcohol, it allows you or should I say the human body, to deal with the effects way better long-term. But if you have a habit of drinking moonshine every Friday, at 75% alcohol, is going to have bad effects on your body in less time even if drink just a little bit and on occasion.

Your vision is not folly thought out, the more money that goes into big cannabis corporations the more publicly available cannabis will become, which, in turn will cause there to be a greater incentive to do further research on the plant. You have to weigh up the pros and cons. You may not like supporting big companies but in doing so you do have positive effects. However, while sticking to home growing and dealers will keep cannabis culture underground, hidden away from society, remaining a taboo for much longer.

@Hombolicious
@Hombolicious 5 лет назад
This statement doesn't make enough sense. While there is theoretically a upper limit on how many receptors are active due to THC this isn't a simple calculation. THC binds with receptors in the brain, how much of the time each receptor is being activated is based in large part on the concentration of THC in the synaptic gap. When a THC molecule binds to a receptor it activates it then after some time detaches and floats away. The lag or delay between another THC molecule binding and reactivating the receptor is related to the concentrations of THC floating in the synaptic gap. As you increase concentration you reduce the time delay between bindings and so increase activation. The assumption in your comment Seph is that you ingest some weed, and the receptors bind and stay bound until the THC gets metabolised. That isn't how it works. Increasing the concentration both increases the total time receptors are activated and how many receptors are being activated simultaneously or in near succession. Lower concentrations will lower activation rates higher does will increase them. You obviously do not understand the mechanisms of how the neurons communicate pharmacologically.

The problem is the way it is being legalized. It isn't being legalized so that you can grow your own but so that those with money can do so and make huge profits. For example, in kansas it's some a $3k per acre just to apply for the permit and then the cost go up from there and that's to grow hemp for cbd.

I wish dispensaries sold old school red bud, Acapulco Gold, etc. Great taste and mellow high. We used to say pot doesn't give a hangover (in moderation), but this new super weed can make one quite foggy afterwards. I can't smoke it now because of my job. Someday... Nevertheless, I learned that the thing I liked was the peace of mind, and have learned to find it through other means such as meditation, mindfulness, and being content with the simple life rather than chasing material possessions. 😁😁

I’m curious: to everyone who started with marijuana and ended up moving to other and worse drugs, what age did you first try weed?

I started smoking pot at 15. I have never moved on to another drug. I still smoke daily in a state where it is not legal and have no problems having a supplier. I am 63 yrs old, full time worker, own my house free and clear, and haven't had any tickets or accidents driving. I think it should be legalized nation wide.

Ted talks are usually informative and interesting. This guy has an agenda to push and shame on you guys for giving him this platform.

smileybeatworx hey I agree and disagree with some of the stuff this guys saying but everyone has a right to free speech and Ted is a platform for all speech and I’m pretty sure for the most part when someone is speaking informatively about something they always have an agenda

Ok then let's follow that path! If it becomes profitable then the capitalist capitalizes! If it's leagal then I can grow my own I don't need a middle man. Let's not create an american cartel you know like tabaco, alcohol, oil, guns, politicians, lawyers, doctors. Need I go on? Oh ya AA NA!

LittlepigStore, LLC I would still like something with a nice flavor & 5-10% THC. And definitely labeling about pesticides or other growth chemicals applied to the flower.

We review legal cannabis in Washington state, and this needs to be paid attention to, People need to recognize where the money goes. These fools are everywhere.

What is extremely bizarre is that this is exactly the same conclusion I came to last week as I toured many Dispensaries in Maine. The Commercialization and Industrialization of THC.

The difference between medical marijuana and recreational marijuana is the same thing as the difference between medical prescription drugs and recreational use of prescription drugs. Medical use is doing the amount the doctor suggest and for the purpose of treating a condition and and recreational use is just doing whatever amount you want for pleasure over and above concern for specific condition treatment. Look up the difference between "self-medicating" and medicating under doctor supervision and that's the difference between medical and recreational anything whatsoever. Whether it's marijuana that were talking about or some well established and widely prescribed pill is really irrelevant.

The prices were supposed to come down after legalization, but the taxes the states charge offset that. And the increased THC content is offset by not smoking as much to achieve the desired effect. "Natural" means not made in a beaker.
