Come explore a section of the D&L trail between White Haven, PA & Mountaintop, PA. This 11 mile section will take us on two former abandoned Railroad lines and along the way we'll see some incredible & beautiful sights, including an area that I didn't know existed and is only accessible by trail. I'm also trying out a new ebike as well so we'll learn more about that and see how well it performed on this trail.

What was your favorite part of this journey? If you couldn't tell, the lake was my favorite. Thanks for coming along with me.

I always like when u find things that only 'explorers' have the ability to spot. For example, that small, metal sign with no markings but appeared to be railroad related - only explorers see things like that. I doubt 'regular folk' would ever spot that.

Awesome foldability on the Cycrown! Looks like you had a really nice, comfortable ride, too! Love these rail trail videos for the gorgeous scenery! Had to chuckle at the "Beaver Hotel" on Creasy Creek, Lol! But hands down the best view was Moosehead Lake. Nice! Cool to see a phone booth standing there along the way, and impressive rock outcropping spot! Great job, Loved it! Thanks for bringing us along!💙🌞

That concrete post next to the cut off telegraph pole would have been post to hold wooden relay cabinet for track signals for the trains, they at one time used wooden cabinets then changed to steel, Like those cabinets you see at RR crossings.

As always, love how you tie in maps wherever your adventures are. I noticed on a pre-1940 map that a little to the west of the Moosehead Lake is a crossing over a river called Bear Junction. This was a rail line which intersected the D&L there and headed Northeast called the Bear creek rail and it went north up to Bear Creek. You can see the bed up to route 436 (probably a fire road now). And you can also traces of the bed to Bear Creek, but they are not marked once you get past 436. Thank you for the great time.

That's probably the same line that serviced bear creek dam on 115 for the ice business of Albert Lewis.

Those poles were dug into dry ground undoubtedly. Lake water must have risen, or maybe the lake was created/enlarged after the RR built in.

18:50 - on some railroads there are signs stating the sloping of the track so the train engineer would know if it's uphill or downhill. Might seem trivial, but it would determine amount of power that has to be applied to avoid getting slowed down or getting overspeed.

At around the 9 minute mark it looks like there might have been THREE lines since there's another raised section on the opposite side of the trail from where you found the ties. Actually right behind that old phone booth where you mentioned the old ties was the raised rail bed again. Kinda surprised that you didn't go explore it.

OK, you went by Moosehead Lake, wondering why the utility poles were all in the water. I think I can help. I have a topo map of the area from 1894 which hangs on my wall. It shows all the railroads and what they had for roads. I can send you a shot if you send me an address. It shows the then-active railroad past that area. It's the asme place, with an area right there called Moosehead. Further up, there's the trail you mentioned which is identified as Bear Creek railroad. The place that has the phone booth and the trail going off there is Bear Creek Junction. The map shows three structures at that point. My guess is at least one was housing for the workers. But, what is important to your enquiry is that I see no body of water inside of the curve at all. I can send a photo of it if you want, but I get the impression that the area was dammed up sometime past 1894 for an ice pond - where they would harvest ice in winter to deliver to iceboxes all over the area, before refrigerators were common. Railroads would often have a spur for the ice cars. Henry Drive in Rice Township had one when that road was also a railroad, to service the two ice lakes there. So, the utility poles pre-dated the ice lake is what I'm saying.

That’s the problem with the eastern part of the US, so much land has been sold and it’s hard to find places to go hiking, biking or camping that doesn’t have land posted. It’s a bit different out west where most land is still like it was during the frontier days!

There is access to the other side of Moosehead but you would need someone local to take you. Parking for 1 car , nothing to let you know there is a trail head and the trail isn't marked. Honestly, having seen both, the view you had is the better view. It's a much wider view from the bike trail.

The LV and CNJ combined track routes in 1965 from white haven (Frasers Jct) to save $$ on maintenance as they were both in financial trouble at the time , LV abandoned this portion in favor for the CNJ route that goes thru White Haven tunnel, had less grade and more direct. As you said in 1972 they pulled out of PA. LV was then heavy with the D&H-RR sharing business and trackage rights... CNJ route was leased from Lehigh and Susquehanna (L&S), they were the first route thru the Lehigh Gorge and grabbed the best routes, then the LV took over picking best from both roads, keeping some LV and some CNJ routes. Mostly from White Haven to Solomons Gap.
