My grandfather was in La Union when the war started. He joined the resistance group formed by US and Filipino army officers who escaped from the japanese forces. He was later recognized by the military and was given with the rank of corporal. He was supposed to be given benefits for serving but his corrupt captain tricked him and his platoon who were mostly illiterate to surrender their documents and sign fraudulent papers. The ironic life of my grandfather. he fought for the freedom of his own country but it was his own countrymen who left him to poverty.

really the light tanks were quite evenly matched. Both had 37mm main guns. The Stuart had a 3 man turret which made command and control easier and the Japanese Tanks had diesel engines so they did not catch fire as quickly as ours. Whoever shot first and the straightest generally won. In the battle he talked about the Japanese medium tanks had hand cranked turrets and a low velocity main gun made for supporting infantry with HE shells and our tankers really took it too them. Our boys fought so hard. :( Read Thunder on Bataan about our tankers.

There were many, and a lot of Filipino guerrilla commanders as well. Their efforts, both Filipino and American guerrillas were extremely valuable. Not only because of the intelligence gathering, but they were basically an organized partisan force. Unfortunately these guerrillas and their efforts were somehow chosen to be ignored/underappreciated by the US government, to make it seem like General MacArthur did most of the work. This did not only mean that the efforts of the Filipino guerrilla commanders were underappreciated but also the American guerrilla commanders inside the Philippines as well, which is also sad.

An excellent historical presentation. All credit to the brave Filipino and American defenders of Bataan. It is absolutely remarkable how long they delayed the Japanese particularly considering their lack of effective resupply. Instead of days or weeks they held out for months - far past the fall of Singapore. Pity so few Americans know today of this heroic episode. But Filipinos are aware of this great heroic effort. The Japanese never fully conquered the Philippines thanks to the many effective Filipino Guerrilla groups.

The reason its not known or taught is because it was a humiliation to the usa jingoistic narrative, so defeats must not be allowed to be shown in the education system??, its funny how mericans are so quick to remind britis about Singapore but totally gloss over the fact that Philippines was the first dommino to fall in the Pacific theater, or is it done to deflect the guilt, look over there not here sort of deflection...

My dad was a sergeant in Philippine Division HQ at Ft. McKinley & then at Mariveles, Bataan. He along with 3 privates escaped just before the Death March, joining refugees who helped them pass for civilians till they got off the peninsula. After recovering from malaria he joined the Resistance, gathering intel on Japanese activities until 1944, when he was assigned to train and lead a company of guerrillas for the liberation campaign. There are countless stories about the war that will never be fully told in the history books.

He was part of the Malansad Raid, the capture of Japanese train supply convoy in Libmanan, Camarines Sur, that led to the death of hundreds of Japanese Armies. He was also part of the Pasacao ambush, that killed several high ranking Japanese officers while on their way to Nueva Caceres (now Naga City). My grandpa died last 2010 at the ripe age of 102.

Now for a video about the Guerillas fight against the occupation, until the return of major Allied Forces on the beaches of Leyte. So often the fight of Americans, Filipinos, Chinese, and others against the Imperial Japanese occupiers are forgotten by those without a connection to the islands. Of the Sailors aboard many submarines, who offloaded Filipinos from Hawaii and California, who helped reconnect the guerillas to the larger war against the Empire of Japan. About the hundreds of small Guerilla forces who fought in their own ways to harass and weaken the occupiers. About the civilian internees who waited for a rescue that would finally be done by the 11th Airborne Division. And many more stories that are long overdue to be told.

@@charlesplayzeverything4386 Hmmm I think he has a point. The Philippine republics at that time was weakened by their own war of liberty against Spain. America knows this and when they offered to help the Philippine against Spain which is in this point had already trapped most of the Spanish soldiers in Intramuros which they did a mock battle against America which was just a plot to get them out of there and keep the Pilipino out of the capital. Treaty of Paris happened. America troops barred them from entering and even started shooting at them when they didn't stop because its a really big sin going back home right? But, also the problem was this... The Americans had no point or even right to buy, step foot, and conquer a newly born nation. The thing is the Philippine American War should have never happened. They killed alot of not just soldiers but, civilian too, Also look up human zoos, And made the foundations to keep the Philippine not being able to utilize its full potential. I do not in all fact hate America but, this is basically what would happen if France decided to just invade America instead of letting them be free. America would be too tired to fight, they would still be divided, and would be completely totaled by the French army. Because this is basically the equivalent to it.

Daoat talaga kinalat sila

Plano na talaga i-surrender ng US yung Philippines nung una palang kasi mas naka focus sila sa Europe, tsaka alam nila na ma li-liberate dn nila yung SEA after nila matalo yung Germany and maka recover yung Pacific fleet. The moment na nag declare ng war yung Japan sa U.S talo na agad sila based sa military superiority and supply, na conquer lang ng Japan yung SEA based sa speed and not raw power. Btw try watching "Yōjo Senki" world war II theme anime.

In my opinion, the USAFFE retreat in Bataan was a huge mistake. That place was a trap and no escape route. His troops should scattered and fought as a guerrilla from the start. Do saboteur and ambush till the large US convoy arrive and regroup in some point and do counter attack.

This video forgot the battle at the Guagua-Porac Line of January 3, 1942. The Japanese 9th Infantry Regiment pushed at Porac between the regimental lines of the Philippine 21st and 22nd Infantry Regiments of the 21st Division of Gen. Capinpin. The 21st Infantry Regiment collapsed, and it was up to the 21st Field Artillery under Col. Nemesio Catalan to pound the ground at point blank range for the next 6 hours. Col. Takahashi pulled back that night to Fort Stotensburg with his Regiment halved. Gen. Homma and his staff were surprised on the staunch defense at Guagua-Porac Line that they had to reassess their position to the point they didn't do anything on January 4. Wainwright ordered the forces that night to pull back again. The incident at Guagua-Porac probably gave the Japanese a foretaste of what it would be like when they will hit Bataan, and made Gen. Homma less aggressive costing him unfavorable reviews from Tokyo.

If it would not have been for them, my family line would not have had existed by now.

Terrific re-examineination of our brave but poorly planned, supplied, and trained forces. Noteworthy is how a dramatically smaller Japanese force (initially), mobile (bicycles), and aggressive and confident forces (training) reflects on American force distribution, supply, and mobility today. The concurrent fall of Malaya and Indochina also was by a much smaller Japanese force whose mobility (bicycles) and aggressiveness combined with superior training resulted in a swift demise to Britain and her Allies.Control of the seas and skies had a dramatic depressing effect on American morale, particularly as Japanese aggression had been obvious to those watching events for some time in Washington . Is there anywhere that we are repeating this disastrous progression of events today? And how can we assure a different outcome today-absent nuclear suicide?

Invasions Running Concurrent?? No, not at all, germany hadn't even declared war on the states yet, or merica wasn't even officially on record as being allied to any nation yet?.. Typical Whataboutism? Phillipines was the domino that fell first, im sick of mericans putting brits through the wringer with spitefulness, and trying to deflect the heat and shame through their own incompetence, so much for being stoic loyal allies thats stood by throughout history in thick or thin through being likewise cultures and ancestry???, and they're supposed to be friends and faithful brethrens, so faithful in fact they will quite literally throw their allies under the bus....

In the United States, FDR was fighting a battle within the country against the isolationists that didn't want the country to go to war. I understand that! What I don't understand is that FDR KNOWING that war WAS imminent did so little to re-arm the US military. For example, the US knew the strengths of the Japanese Navy & Air Force, but did very little to level the playing field. American fighter planes were much slower than Japanese Zeros, etc etc. Had the US done a better job of preparing the PI for an upcoming invasion or attack, the Japanese would have paid a higher price for invading Manila. But we see the same military incompetence at Midway, Guam, Hawaii and all across the board by the American high command. Later, videos make McArthur out to be a military genius but I beg to differ with that analysis. When the US finally declared war, the high command decided to attack Germany first, totally ignoring the plight of not only the POWs in the Philippines but also the innocent civilians, who paid a terrible price for their captivity under the Japanese regime. My dad had a statue of McArthur, as the savior of the PI, and we were forbidden from making negative comments about him (in my dad's presence) but the US military did a horrible job of preparing the PI for the upcoming war... and much of that falls on McArthur! Sorry dad!

"Poorly trained or not." These Philippine Reserves fought better than the professional British-Indian Malayan troops in the South. In fact the Japanese were so pissed off at them after that they had them do the death march.... (Probably it is because they were fighting on their own land rather than being a Colonial Unit) Edit: No offense to British-Indian troops, I think they fought very well in times.
