Let's face it, visiting a timber merchant for the first time can be terrifying. How does it work? What do you do? Where do you go? So many questions have to be found out the hard way.
In this series, I am going to settle that confusion. I am going to be visiting various timber merchants around the UK in order to get a broad view as to how they all work, what to expect, and how to go about purchasing timber.
This will allow you to fully prepare yourself before visiting a timber merchant, and make informed decisions while you are there.
In this video, we are visiting Surrey Timbers who are located just below Guildford. This is my favourite timber merchant for spectacular one-off pieces and is the perfect starting point for someone who is intimidated by timber merchants. Brad was kind enough to give me a tout and show what they stock, what they offer, and what to do when you get there.

Matt, this is exactly what beginners like myself need to see. Thanks for doing this and look forward to the rest. My biggest worry ( apart from where to get it ) is price of wood and what we should expect to pay and why. When looking at this video I was constantly looking over your shoulder so to speak trying to get a proper glimpse at pricing. Also you mention about the cut list. So maybe you could offer some tips about making one up, advice on things to remember like if and when we should use final cut sizes etc..

Wood is priced generally by the cubic foot or by the foot length. A cubic foot could be 8 feet long but it depends on the thickness and width of the wood. So a cubic foot of 8x2 oak could cost £30 to £40. You could get a small project such as a coffee table out of. Just visit a timber merchant and ask to see what they have and then ask about the price. Tell them you are just making enquiries and go and have a physical look at the wood. They will always let you look at it.

@@bighands69 yes generally but when they sell air dried one offs the price is usually different for every piece as you can’t value character- I run a sawmill and sue drying timber merchant with 20 years experience

This is such an important video for beginners! Thank you so much, Matt. I was lost in a sea of confusion with engaging with this stuff. It’s funny, you can buy all the tools and watch all the videos but getting the material can be the difficult thing for so many!

Thanks to Matt. I ordered 3 planks of thin padauk box making. I wanted the hobby pack but can't afford it at the moment. I asked local Wenban Smith "Do you do hobby packs. Small planks for making boxes?", was told "No and I don't think you'll find any timber yards that do that". They were wrong. Thankfully we have Surry Timbers. I'll have to practice on scrap wood first as still struggle with the dovetail joints and even cutting straight.

What is your biggest concern/worry before visiting a timber merchant? Who is your favourite timber merchant in the UK? What else would you like to see from this series?

Apart from not being able to find anywhere like this near me (b&q or similar is all I can find) my biggest worry as an absolute beginner is that they’re geared up for blokes in the trade and I don’t have a clue what to even ask for. I did manage to find a recycled timber specialist and squeaked ‘anything that isn’t pine’ like a muppet. The guys were really good and I got some mysterious but beautiful hardwoods I had to remove the nails from but it was fun to try a new material. You’re right, it is very intimidating but this was a good insight and I hope this series helps others! Knowing types of wood to go for would be a big help.

As someone mentioned below, somewhere in Essex would be good! Last time I went looking for a woodshop I spent quite some time driving around from their website and not finding it. Don't think it was the one mentioned below though (or their website got better)

Brilliant idea for a series! I'll look forward to seeing where else you end up. In the South West, Yandles near Yeovil and Interesting Timbers near Wells come highly recommended. Biggest concern for me? I don't usually go shopping for specific pieces of wood. I want to browse and get inspired by something. Not all merchants are set up to accommodate that. And I like to know the price up front so I can make a value judgement for myself before committing. Finally - open at Weekends (or at least Saturday) is a factor since I work full time. Keep them coming Matt!

You have to look down on them. You are the crafts person they are the sales persons. You are always in control no matter what. You can buy or just say I am not interested. You always hold the upper hand with them. No matter how funny they are becoming with you.

This is probably the nicest and most organized hardwood dealer I've seen. I don't got to many of them but the ones here in the States I've been to are no where close to this kind of quality. They actually seem really nice and professional towards the hobbyists as well.

America has a far greater range of wood merchants than the UK. Nearly every state will have several large timber merchants and then a series of smaller ones that supply direct from the larger. America has a proper timber industry that the UK has not got. Canada like the US has an amazing timber industry. I would say your problem is that you do not know where too look and you are probably buying from big general stores which really only sell average quality for the average person. Unless you are unlucky to be in a part of America that simply has no timber merchants. If that is the case you are going to need to locate one and travel to them and get the wood delivered in bulk because that is what I have to do.

a brilliant video I'm a 65 year old fart who loves woodwork, but boy have you opened my eyes. I just loved seeing all these types of woods. I am interested in building very small projects using walnuts, maples etc, jewelry boxes for family , stuff like that, just wish that warehouse was up here in Yorkshire. Just watched your video where yiu made the large table in 24 hours, brilliant, well done lads, will be watching more of your videos , from Garry In Barnsley , South Yorkshire, the land of flat caps, and wippets, althought never seen either lol

Matt, this has been such a helpful view. I, like a lot of people, have felt intimidated going to a sawmill. Fear of being ripped off, needing to make rushed decisions and potentially costly mistakes. Nice work!

Hiya Matt. If you are going to visit timber merchants you might want to talk to Tim at The hardwood offcut shop in Brentwood. He supplies lots of hobby woodworkers and turners, is very knowledgeable and helpful about what he sells. it is such a friendly place to buy your timber from whether its a blank for a bowl or a huge slab. you always feel comfortable asking questions and he always takes the time to answer them. In my experience this isn't always the case at other places iv'e visited.

I can highly recommend a visit to The Hardwood Off Cut shop in Brentwood Essex. Tim is a great bloke, not only does he sell wood he will also help with any woodworking problems and pass on advice, it’s like a toy shop for woodworkers.

I don't live to far from Surrey timbers, only been there once but I thought exactly the same as you Matt, just like a shop for gorgeous peices of unusual wood, I fell in love with so many but couldn't afford the ones I liked 😂. When my wallet is full of money instead of moths I will go back there! I've just opened my own little workshop so hopefully I'll be visit that place again soon. Cool video by the way. Brilliant video Matt, just the sort of thing that is useful to newbies like me. I'm just getting into the subject as a hobbyist and having merchants that understand the hobby woodworker is great. I hate that patronising stance that some outlets give you when you aren't a professional chippy. Just wish they were nearer to me up in Yorkshire.

Surrey Timbers is one of my favourite suppliers for exotic hardwoods for guitar building. I'm presently using some ovangkol that I bought there to make a neck, and am also finishing off a guitar made from bubinga and wenge that I bought there, together with a top that I bought at Timberline (aka Exotic Hardwoods) in Tonbridge. I'll definitely be going back there again in the near future.

Constructive criticism - you started the video relaying how stressful a first time visit to the supplier can be . Maybe do a video role playing a bit through a typical visit. How to spec out your needs to the supplier, how to request to plane a bit of a board to better see the grain, how to properly get a quote, etc.???

Okay this video was an awesome taster. Would love to see you go through the woods and discuss their common uses etc, alongside indicative prices for certain pieces. Would love a vid like that to complement this one! I'm refitting our home from scratch (ripped everything out and back to the 180 year old brick) and I'm a bit crazy about seeing gorgeous wood in a reasonably raw state around me when it's finished - tables, fitted stuff, wood panels (not so much in raw for this one...), etc!

Super helpful video. I too have worried about needing to buy blind online or buy minimum board feet at a timber yard. This place seems right up my alley! Makes me look forward to visiting as a hobbyist rather than being intimidated by the prospect. Obviously not all businesses are equal, and my local may be different, but it seems if that's the case it's worth shopping around for one more hobbyist friendly.

My biggest concern is that I'm not from the country I live on, so the wood species have different names: - Do you have XYZ? - What is that? We have something like this, is called XWW, does it work for you? But I'm not from the UK nor live there, but the struggle is the same when I see your videos, luckily I can recognize some wood species just watching them

Coconut palm is nasty stuff. Tried to turn a piece once. Never forgave the guy who gave it to me. You can turn it end grain though.... You should go through the difference between kiln dried, solar kilns, vacuum kilns, and air dried lumber. Standard kiln/kill drying is workable, but the other 3 are far better to work with.... I don't have a wood buying problem.... It is all for research!

Seems really nice!. Taking the time for a customer and letting you make a choice between boards is so important. I usually go to a very large supplier, where this sort of attention to customers is not present.

OMG, Matt... such an orgasmic variety of beautiful woods! I never knew such was available in the UK (I'm an ignorant sort) - I've been there a couple X-mas' ago... I **LOVE** your country (I'm from a part of the US called "New England", but my blood is Canadian - Métis). I'm a musical instrument maker, so my eyes bugged out even more in the upstairs part of this video - I've never drooled so much at a RU-vid video before! LOL Such beautiful pieces... thanks so much for this video! ^_^

America has a much better woodworking industry than the UK. Tools are far more expensive in the UK and timber is far harder to locate as well. B&Q is the nearest think the UK has to home home depot and it only offers cheap terrible pine that is as expensive as hell. A dewalt saw that can be hand in America for $300 would cost about $700 in the UK. Houses are far smaller in the UK as well so it means very few people have the ability to do woodwork. It is usually a hobby of the rich and I am not exaggerating.

I build my own custom guitars down in Portsmouth and I use Surrey timbers ..they are awesome..they have a great selection and do great prices ..and at times do you a good deal 👌👌👌👌👌

Being an apartment, mostly hand tool woodworker having hardwood delivered and at a manageable size is great. Most shops in town are construction timber only.

Theres a place in west Sussex called English Woodlands timber which is also a nice place to visit. Just like Surrey timbers. Highly recommend it as I'm studying furniture making at college.

Very good to see. Wanted to know what they are like and if I can give them a list of cuts I need and they cut it up for me as have no power tools. Appears they will. Good for people who have projects and need the wood cut for them.

I with our sawmills here in America were like this. Everyone I have every been in, or worked for. Carries a hand full of species. Most of which is stored out in the elements.

I noticed that the pieces with price stickers display the measurements in millimetres, but they're priced by the cubic foot. What a cockeyed system. It's as daft ( well it is to me ) as the US system of pricing in board feet and measuring in quarters, ie. nine quarter is two and a quarter inches, seven quarter is one and three quarter inches. Why can't they just sell it by the foot/metre at different prices for width and thickness? Having said that, it definitely looks worth a visit.

This is vastly different to how I can buy lumber as an individual here in Sweden. Any lumberyard here has mostly pre-dimensioned yellow pine and different kinds of man-made products like particleboard, masonite, and MDF. They may also stock some oak, but only as lengths of ready profiles for framing windows and doors. Only one company here sell hardwood and they only accept companies as customers.

UK is not much better to be honest. There are very few timber traders in the UK and most people would have to travel to find one. The biggest problem people have in the UK is the price of tools and high cost of housing. 40% of the population in the UK live smaller properties with no ability to do woodworking.

Is it sad that I live in western Pennsylvania, the heart of America’s hardwoods, and I have no mill like this to go to? I hear how common and available hardwoods are in the northeast, yet there are no sellers like this around. Factor in drive time and everything else and it’s simply cheaper for me to buy good lumber from box stores.

This is such a great series, Matt. I live in the West Midlands and would really like some help with this. I’ve posted in the comments a few times that I’m new to woodworking (so, sorry if it’s getting a bit boring), and any help regarding tools, techniques and sourcing timber is very welcome. You have some great videos, and this is one series I was hoping for. Nice one, Matt! So if anyone can recommend a good (or great) timber merchants in the West Midlands area, I’d be very grateful. Hi, good to see the walk around at the timber merchant but is there any chance you could give us an idea of what we could expect to pay for a few examples as you go around?

Yes definitely, I know these timbers can be expensive but literally have no idea on price so a couple of examples would be brilliant.

Exotic woods are very expensive normally but not always and you really have to do your research to get a good idea of the price. Now normal good quality everyday woods such as Oak, Ash, pine and walnut usually come in 8x2 or 8x1 or 6x1 sizes. An example would be a cubic foot of 8x2 oak would be around £30 to £50. That would allow you to build a small table out of. Just go into a timber merchant and see what they have and explain you are just looking and pricing the wood. 99% of timber yards will help you as they are thinking that you will be a regular customer for them to tap into. They may ask what you are doing with the wood so just say it to them.

bighands69 : thanks for spending the time to go over that and I suppose the common sense answers to most of the questions makes a lot of sense. My main concern was with how off-putting it is to go into a place like that having no idea, ahead of time, what I can expect to pay. Particularly when there it is unlikely the is anywhere else nearby to compare prices.

Hi can I ask you if you found any in Aldershot Hampshire I’ve got not transport other than my wheelchair and have zero wood and still trying to finish my shed so I can sort it but company who built it giving me problems as shed leaking and they keep trying to shift blame on to us. Not sure where I can go to get some wood when needed as hopefully going to try and do end grain chopping board for wife and sister

Hey Matt.. I've purchased rough lumber once in my woodworking experience. I am looking forward to going back. I was one who fell victim to not having a cut list, lol. I did pretty well off the top of my head. I did have a bit left over of inr species and bought just exactly what i needed of the other with little room for error.. just got lucky. But i was wondering. When choosing rough cut wood for your project, how much more in size should you take in consideration for dimensioning to ensure you buy what is needed? Or how much material is, on average, lossed in dimensioning rough lumber to get to final dimentions? So for ex: you're final dimension for, lets say, an end table top is 1.25"×12.75"×16". The top is made from 3 laminated pieces measuring 1.25"×4.25"×16". What size rough lumber should be purchased for the top? Thanks for your time

All serious woodworkers should have a wood stock of their own. SO every time you have too much left over it goes to the stock. This then will allow you to do projects as you wish. I do not go with cut lists but go with a rough estimate that is normally too much. If you are going from project to project with just enough wood it will mean someday getting stuck.
