Surrogacy is an assisted reproduction technique where a woman, known as the surrogate, agrees to carry and give birth to a child for another person or couple, referred to as the intended parents. Surrogacy arrangements are generally categorized into two types:
Traditional Surrogacy: In this method, the surrogate is inseminated with the sperm of the intended father, making her the genetic mother of the child.
Gestational Surrogacy: Here, an embryo created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the egg and sperm of the intended parents (or donors) is implanted in the surrogate. The surrogate has no genetic connection to the child in this scenario.
Surrogacy offers hope to many individuals and couples who are unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term due to medical reasons. It provides an opportunity for them to become parents and experience the joy of raising a child.
Surrogacy in India has been a notable destination for surrogacy, particularly for its lower costs and availability of surrogate mothers. However, the surrogacy landscape in India has undergone significant changes due to regulatory reforms aimed at addressing ethical issues and preventing exploitation.
