I just listened to this SACD again today and it really set the gold standard for surround IMO. When I want to introduce someone to surround, this is the goto disc :)
@@lifeinsurround Another Bob Clearmountain you say? Which one was that? i always try not to miss your reviews, esp. a big one that involves someone like Bob
I have probably listened to the surround mix of this 500 times. It truly improves on the atmospherics of the stereo layer to a stunning extent. As a home theater calibrator and designer its the reference that I use to evaluate a room and speaker placement post build. A perfect mix and the addition of Always Unknowing was a great mix with some superb guitar work by Neil Hubbard.
Excellent! I hear Avalon might receive an Atmos release. Curious whether I'll like it better than the 5.1. I think Bob Clearmountain might have done the Atmos too.
I FINALLY got my hands on this one! I had no idea there was just a SACD stereo version until I bought it! Ohhh I was extremely upset when it came in the mail and I put it in my player! I should’ve known it was the stereo version because it was only $20. There’s a guy on eBay that I usually get all of my DVD-Audio discs from and he finally got his hands on the multi channel SACD version of Avalon and so I bought it. The thing about this guy is every disc I’ve ever bought from him has been in near mint or brand new condition with the original cellophane , lovingly packaged and mailed in a timely fashion. The original asking price was $199 which I probably would have paid but I waited a bit for it to come down in price. I still paid $140 for the damn thing but it’s genuinely worth it. My Cadillac doesn’t play SACD discs so I converted it onto a USB thumb drive……..it sounds AMAZING!! I can’t go on enough about it!! I’d say “Avalon”, “Brothers in Arms” all surround sound releases from Porcupine Tree, “Gaucho” and “Brain Salad Surgery” are the mixes by which all othered are judged. It’s that good!
Roxy Music Avalon sacd 5.1 is definitely in the top ten surround mixes of all time. I really can’t think of any mix I have heard which tops this one. Very discrete mix. I purchased this years ago at fair price but it is hard to find cheaply anymore.
Sometimes you got to get these titles while the gettin' is good. It sure seems to me that more labels should repress their most popular titles. There is money in it.
The first CD I ever bought, when CD players just came out and there weren't many titles available yet. I think they were about $30 and players like $600 or something. Beautiful album and one of the best sounding CDs you will ever hear. Every instrument is perfectly recorded. I have HDCD remaster which is great but even the original version is still amazing. And I just heard that bonus track Almost Unknowing today! A real gem that should have been included on the HDCD version. Unfortunately I've no surround system. Must sound incredible. Nice review.
Comrade! I have been SO busy with my internship that I am WAY behind on your channel: 854 subscribers! Da Phuque! Any hoo, I recollect seeing this before but this is a new and improved version! Do you still have the old one? Can we still see the comments? I miss you and this channel. My internship ends mid-December. Ima have to binge watch me some LiS! Stay Surrounded!
The Return of Clement! You've been missed. The original cut of this review can still be viewed if you have the link. The experiment was to recut the same footage in the most positive way possible and see if viewers like it better. The 1st video had a like percentage near 50 and this one is near 100. Some of your comments were used to guide the recut. Don't forget to take time to Disturb the Universe and Live Life in Surround!
@@lifeinsurround I love you, comrade! You're the best. Seriously. When I get a tv, my thought was to make a tribute video reviewing DtU! Back to the grind. Stay Surrounded!
I GOT THIS SACD LIKE 17 years ago I think. To me, I think this is the best produced 5.1 sacd I have heard, this and Foreigner no 4 and dire straits brothers in arms.
Def. the gold standard. Even the stereo and the OG vinyl are brilliant 7 or so years ago, maybe more, when i got into SACD i seen this for sale at 900.00 So now at 100.00 that is quite a price drop eh LOL
Just seen this - i love the stereo / HDCD version already, and the record is also no slouch. However, on ebay uk at the moment, the SACD is between £70 to £100 which i cannot justify.
Have you ever heard Mike Oldfield-Tubular Bells 2003 dvd-a? I think the 5.1 on that is a thrilling ride. ELP-Brain Salad Surgery dvd-a and the Sanctuary 5.1 are absolutely stunning.
I love it when the original recording and mixing engineers to the multichannel remix. It's usually extra-special that way. This is truly a top-notch mix!
