Survival Skills: An Inuit's Ice-Hole Walrus Hunt

In this riveting scene from Robert Flaherty's groundbreaking docudrama "Nanook of the North", we witness the Inuit hunter Nanook's incredible strength and tenacity. Armed with only a harpoon, Nanook ventures out onto the treacherous sea ice in search of the mighty walrus, a dangerous prey but vital for the survival of his people in the harsh Arctic. Spotting a walrus surfacing at a breathing hole, Nanook springs into action, hurling his harpoon with deadly accuracy. But the battle has just begun. With the harpoon line tied around his body, Nanook engages in a desperate tug-of-war with the massive creature beneath the ice. He hauls the line out 10, 12 feet, only to be dragged back, sliding across the frozen surface. Again and again he pulls, his very life at stake should he lose his grip. Realizing he cannot win this fight alone, Nanook signals frantically to his fellow hunters. We see them racing across the ice with their dog sleds, rushing to aid their friend and leader. At last they arrive, and together the men strain against the line, pitting their combined strength against the walrus. In a final mighty heave, they drag the animal to the surface, enlarging the breathing hole with their knives to haul it out. The exhausted but triumphant hunters quickly butcher their hard-won prize, dining on the raw blubber and flesh. Their families will not go hungry. While likely staged for the camera, as were many scenes in the film, this sequence nonetheless captures the life-and-death struggles of the Inuit against the unyielding Arctic environment. It is a testament to their skill, courage, and cooperation as a community - qualities that Nanook embodies. Through Flaherty's lens, the "fearless, lovable, happy-go-lucky Eskimo" become vivid and real, their daily heroism forever immortalized on film.

One of the strongest prohibitions in the frozen north is toward cannibalism. Life is so hard that to eat, cannibalism is too easy. and would destroy all culture.

its also important to consider that the inuit often ate their meat raw. generally this isnt an issue for them, but illnesses and stuff pass much more easily from closely related species than distant ones.. and humans are pretty closely related to humans XD

Lots of exaggerated falling down for the camera and teasing that poor dog to get him to snarl for the camera! Film makers haven't changed any in all those years! Still "creating" artificial drama!

I wonder why the rope isn’t tied securely to the harpoon handle? Might make it easier to gain leverage and for others to help!

Of course, due to treaty obligations nowadays, Eskimos and "Native Americans" in general, are allowed to hunt, unlicensed, unregulated, and during seasons closed to the rest of us, utilizing outboard-driven aluminum boats, snowmobiles, four-wheelers, modern scoped rifles, and who knows what modern technology on their "Traditional" subsistence hunts. I say let them eat Spam and drink beer!

So hold up a minute. My dude has a GIGANTIC seal under him, and it's wrapped around his body, with some sort of, what I would have to imagine is natural cordage, and... somehow he isn't like... "compressed" to death? I'm not doubting the footage or the way it's done, to be clear. It's just kinda crazy to me that he's able to not... idk. Maybe I'm not making any sense.
