Another one here. And I was surprised to see you emphasize a pair of clear safety glasses. I learned that lesson about 40 years ago hiking through a mix of trees and bushes during twilight. A leaf (or a couple) brushed one of my eyes. It was instantly painful and very uncomfortable for awhile. It could have been worse - especially conifer needles or a bare twig. I realized then the utility of carrying a pair of safety glasses for negotiating woodland and brush. You are the first and ONLY person I have heard mention it.
as a long distance hiker who has used sawyer filters since 2009, I can recommend that you add a few hose washers to your kit (available from any hardware store). That rubber seal ring you will lose and then the filter is about useless. Also, what long distance hikers do in the winter with sawyer filters to keep them from freezing is open the end where water comes out and blow air using your breath through them to remove as much as water as possible (like backflushing it with air). As long as its not full of water, the water can't expand enough to crack the filter but little droplets that might remain can freeze and it does no damage. Also, your shelter laying against your clothing .... if it rains or its cold you are going to be soaked from condensation that forms on the inside.
Thank you those are good tips. For the shelter I recommend taking power naps(15 minutes to 2 hours MAX) because it's meant to cover ground fast. But if this was an all night shelter condensation is definitely an issue.
@@sharpridgehomestead if filter shell breaks, you know its effd. But it you got a drop of water in the filter hollow phourus fibre and that damages it. You wouldn't even know it, but bacteria and virus can pass.
@@spidergamez look into the sawyer company and what they do that doesn't get a lot of attention or media coverage. But outside of that, there is a reason a LOT of knowledgeable people recommend them for water purification and its because they are the BEST of the best. I've seriously had to filter water that had animal feces in it ... cow feces at that ... because it was the only water source for the next 20 miles. And it wasn't like it was running water, it was a metal tank with water that some cow just walked up too and took a dump in lol .. I honestly would bet my life on sawyer filters working correctly when you need them too. More than once I have had to filter very questionable water and I am fine, outside of this third arm that started growing out of my back a few years ago (joking)
Subd and liked. More realistic bugout bag than others I’ve seen. Here is some things I do. I use a black 20 liter pack ( common color), and put my extra clothes in it rather than an extra sack. If you buy an xtra large polyester long sleeve cammo shirt for your area you can slip it the shoulder straps through the sleeves and the shirt over the pack to cover and reduce its signature in the field or woods. I carry two black 55 gallon contractor bags. One as mattress and the other to slip my feet and legs into. Small summer bag or poncho liner with an SOL brand mylar double size heat sheet, which is quiet and less likely to tear, safety pinned to the inside of the sleep bag or liner will take you down to freezing with extra clothes. And either a nylon poncho or 2mil plastic sheet for tarp. Duck tape corner of plastic sheet and put small slit for stake or tie a marble or button in corner to make away to attach cordage for stake or to tie out. I use a tough but squeezable drink bottle for unclean water with the Sawyer water filter. Easier to fill and squeeze, and use the collapsible bladder to back flush so syringe not needed. A Sawyer or platypus 16 oz or liter bladders better for carry of clean water. Once consumed rollup and just store. Easier to bring a few in case you need to plus up water. I pack a 2 cup pot n lid, or a GI cup with foil lid and fork and spoon, and brew kit. I use a cold steel shovel a lot. I sharped one long edge and the tip of the spade, and then dulled the other long edge so I can grip it with my hand. Then I shortened the handle where it attaches to the spade so I can get one hand on the wood and the other hand on the metal color. And bought the nylon sheath. It is easier to pack and chop with the shortened handle,, and I can make large curls for kindling. It’s an ok splitter. And ok digger. The screws can be removed ( best done at home first and the hole widened slightly) so that a longer branch can be attached to make it into a long handle shovel. And it is a good machete. And a great self defense baton with the sheath on it Can’t shoot everybody that wants to do you harm. A spade can be carried legally where other items can’t. And it appears less dangerous than a hammer. I like seeing what others do with their buggout bags. Thanks for doing the video.
You definitely would have condensation issues with this setup, is also best to carry a metal container, a Canteen and cup would be great, what knife you will use? Is best a full Tang knife or small hatchet to process wood, the nightvision is ok if you are special OP but in your case I would invest on better quality gear instead of nightvision, if you want a good reference kit you can see an older video Alfieaesthetics survival kit
Traveling at night without night vision is doable with practice in most conditions (except very cloudy with heavy rain) just do not look at any light sources, try to not even look at the stars or moon. A weak red light can help if you can't see but a sharp eye will spot you. Night vision has back glow though and makes a distinct little glow around the face of the user which can be spotted by a sharp dark adjusted eye. Plus if your nods get broken you're basically blind for a half hour. Night vision is very nice for seeing distant things quickly though.
That’s why u have assault packs snapped onto the ruck, if ambushed, drop Ruck, take assault pack. Kill enemies, retrieve gear, loot bodies Or die and no longer my problem🤷♂️
Night only hide and blend in with the earth by day. Thermal vision solar charger by day. Socom 16 silencer 10mm glock 12ga with silencer. Carry ammo food water and medical nothing else. I sleep on the ground and wherever. I don't set up any camp no fire no lights at night. I've walked the Appalachian trail from Georgia to Maine. I know what I'm capable of and what I'm not my limitations
Very good setup. Add dryfruits, cookies, chocolates, nutbars, protein bars instead of emergency ration. Add a prefilter for your Sawyer. Get a larger bag and keep it 1/3 empty instead of carrying a small bag fully packed and spare bag.
Love BOB videos that have thoughts behind it beyond how much crap can I cram in a beg. If you don't like the camo of the fanny pack, use Rit dye. I have the same US fanny pack UCP camo and dyed it brown. If you need to wear eye glasses, look for snow goggles that will fit over your glasses, use clear lenses. Some metal bottles can weigh as much as a plastic Nalgene and you can boil water, important in winter if your water freezes. To minimize pack size, carry critical gear spread out in pants and jacket pockets; this is harder to do in very warm areas where you may not need a jacket for most of the day.
Great video. I am under 14lbs for my pack. I use an 28L pack and use the compression straps on it so it's more like an 18L. That way I can add some extra items if I have time. It saves the extra weight of carrying an extra pack. Plus, I can forrage and add some items as I am moving.
Some great tips. Thank you. You had stuff to keep you from getting killed or injured and to maintain mobility, and to protect your core temperature, and to get away to a safe location. I would add a SOL double sized Mylar sheet. It’s quiet, tougher, and inexpensive to your poncho cover. Bugging out would be out of desperation due to danger. Ideally before the chaos by car or after the initial panic by bike or eventually on foot. You should have picked several spots within a 20 mile area of your home or apartment where folks would not typically go to, yet near fresh water. Second you will place food or other supplies caches hidden at your home, and on the way to your hide site. But not at the hide site because it could be compromised. Both your cache and hide site must be hidden from view both on land from housing, stores, or parking lots, and from a road or trail and from the air. Some plastic green or brown Harbor Frieght tarps can keep things water tight and can be unseen with leaves or other vegetation on top. I would make 4 hide sites to start with, and have a total of 10. Start your cache with white Jasmine rice, curried rice, salt, macaroni, canned meat, and canned beans, oilive oil and vinegar for wild greens, mio to add to water, different types of tea and coffee, hard candy, spices for grilling fresh meat or fish. Jello goes great hot or cold, and can be mixed with snow, baby wipes and TP.. Cache container should be rodent and water proof. Ammo cans best, 5 gallon buckets with resealable lids ok. I agree with a small pack concept. Stay away from roads as much as possible. Small fire before dusk under a tree to disparate smoke. Move about late afternoon till dusk, then again just before first light till about noon if shielded from view. Use HEET alcohol cat stove at hide sites or smokeless fire sparingly, like a Dakota fire hole. Your bag should have important paper documents or at least digital copies, but you could cache them in the ground near your house for later retrieval, because your domicile will be looted. The bag should have a small toiletry grooming kit, extra nylon underwear and spare wool socks, top and bottom thermals, black, green or brown fleece hat. Safety glasses and leather gloves, bug net, SAK, pepper spray, Mora or skanvik knife. Small pruning saw. Mid weight fleece warming layer. Clothes should be earth tones. A poncho liner and SOL Mylar sheet make a great sleeping bag or cover. Klymit makes a compact 1 lb sleeping matt. I always bring a nylon rain jacket with hood and poncho. Found out about glide the hard way. I like the Sawyer as well.
You ever been in a country when everything goes south? I have. The assumption is that this is gonna be a surprise. Truth is, it happens quick, but the signs are there way before and people ignore them...every time. Better to get out of Dodge before you need a bug out bag. Your ideas are sound. Forget Nalgene, get single wall stainless you can boil water on a fire. Grey man is wise. NVG is wise. Always better to pay attention to signs, and be gone before you need to bug out. Have stache spots on multiple exit routes. Arm yourself. Lone wolves die alone and have shorter lifespans than well trained military units of well informed brothers. Never be afraid to show your face. Fear no man.
Tip use a hammock and a tarp to get you off the ground and a better night sleep. In 60 seconds you can have your tarp up and out of the rain. Then the hammock and your napping in the rain all comfy. Secondary add a Shamogh to your kit..
So dont use a big enough pack but carry a fanny pack a smaller pack and a empty pack inside the small pack that youre carrying to be able to carry more stuff?
Everyone should spend a night (preferably a couple) with their bug out bags. Too many people theorize and throw shit in a bag. The only way to really improve is to have a few bad nights testing out your gear and making needed adjustments.
Nice to see a video where the importance of clothing is mentioned. When I first got into hiking some years back I stupidly made the mistake of beginning my hike layered up with too much on my person only to end up sweaty and cold. Some great points in this video
You get it, lightweight and able to move. NODs are excellent, very few people have them and hence moving at night means you will see fewer people and most who have NODs are not going to want to engage with you or harm you if you come across them in the early days as they are clearly on their way somewhere specific and not interested in going off plan! After 14 days there will be a load of inch bag owners who had nowhere planned to go sat in the woods hungry and lost.
Yeah running into someone else who has NODs might be a little startling. You are right that someone with these would probably steer clear of you. Thank you for the support.
Remember folks, your needs will vary depending on your environment: City/Urban vs Rural/wooded, Tropical vs Desert. Terrain will dictate your gear choices more than you think, despite your knowledge level. Shelter type, water quantity, weather protection are all things that will heavily dictate what you will need. Great video with great knowledge, but pay attention to HIS environment he is prepping in and then compare it to the area you are in.
I do like the idea of travelling light like this. But my issue is that you never know when you might have to bug out, so the 'bulk' in my pack is the clothing. I could be in a suit at a funeral, my kit in my car, and if I needed to bug out for any reason, I have the clothes there. I don't have to rely on having to have the clothes on my person. In my job I even have to wear specific clothing, so if I ever have to bug out from there, I would need the bug out clothes to hand.
Based on the fact that there’s an actual meta to how these types of videos are made, I can tell you tried solving each problem on your own. One of the meta things is bring a Bivvi for making leaf mattress. Approaching something challenging without seeing how others do it tends to bring new prospective, thanks :D
May suggest that you consider using a Crye Precision Nightcap in lieu of the skullcrusher that came with your night vision device? It's smaller and easier to squeeze into your pack.
Hi, nice video and some good tips. What doesn't sit right with me though is the backpack system. On the one hand a small lightweight backpack for unobtrusive moving that is only 18l but you put a 20l backpack in it to fill with stuff from the car? How do you carry it then? like a turtle, one in the front and one in the back, in your hand? That's very uncomfortable and impractical for longer distances. Same way you put a military kidney pack in which you stuff your clothes and it looks like a big backpack on your back together with a small backpack. So your idea of a grey man, even with your clothes (almost like a uniform) with velcro on the shoulders etc is more conspicuous and less practical than a larger approx 40-50l backpack (that you threw away at the beginning). Which you can put the few things you have in a small one, but still have plenty of room for clothes, car stuff, and will carry you much better, more comfortably over longer distances, etc. And with normal clothes you'll be less conspicuous and look like a tourist than in your current outfit.

You’ve articulated the problem perfectly. Solving the problem is extremely difficult. Night vision devices affect depth perception. Very difficult to travel over rough terrain. No trauma kit? Unless you have a cache or bug-out location deep in the woods, I can’t see the need for a compass. You should already know where you’re going and how to get there.
Good video. I am planning to lighten my gears. In principle, the hiking set also works as a bug out set. Many preppers have really big and heavy backpacks. But it doesn't work as you said. Winter brings its own challenges and then light equipment is not enough. That's when you need a pulka and skis. In deep snow it is hopeless to walk longer distances with or without snowshoes. Even heavier equipment moves well on the pulka. Skiing saves energy when you don't have to lift your legs up. A bug out situation in the winter would be the worst possible scenario.
It also occurred to me that molle webbings and molle pockets increase the attention of people because of the military appearance and increase the weight tremendously. To put it a little more pointedly, even a small molle pocket weighs more than the equipment intended for it.
32l scree is my bug out/day hike bag. I can attach a compression bag to the bottom with my sleep gear/warm clothes. Aquamira tabs and sawyer squeeze with 2 smartwater bottles, kitchen & food in the main. My tarp and poop kit strapped to the outside. There’s a lil more just no room to write lol
Better carry an extra gasket for the sawyer. If you lose the gasket the filter is useless. Put a couple of tealights in your bag and use them to make a super shelter.
A 'I have a lot of stuff and you can come take it' is a defeatist mindset. I'm not sure that it matters whether it's a MARPAT ILBE Gen 2 or something blue. They are both big rucks that have a lot of gear in them a desperate person might need. Remember the Mattis doctrine, 'Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.' If you're having fun you're hiking and camping. Real survival isn't fun.

I like how you’re thinking here about keeping things light, but I think you’re underestimating shelter, I can see you getting really wet really cold then you’re going to wish you had a bigger bag, dying is easy but suffering is hard
Given your stated goal, I think it's not bad and will work if nothing goes wrong. The only change I would advise is to use a compactor trash bag instead of that kitchen one. They are much sturdier and likely to keep those clothes dry. They are like small contractor trash bags. I did like the fact that you included a ground cloth. Many have a tarp for overhead but nothing to keep them dry from the ground. Personally, I think your kit is too light. Mostly in the lack of flexibility of the situation. For example, if you end up in a rain storm that makes travel unsafe, that tarp size is going to make you miserable. Also, say you're with someone much less prepared, you have no way of assisting them. I'm not saying you have to help, but are you planning to ignore all of your fellow man, including the kid who is lost or separated? If the idea is a bugout bag, you're probably not the only person on the move. It's always easier to ditch unnecessary gear to lighten your load than it is to acquire needed gear in an emergency.

Well, at least he's thinking about bugging out. I have ton's of criticisms but ill save those.please folks do your research and practice. I got a chuckle out of the compass navigation tips the most. And I failed land navigation in an Army course. I was a 2nd time go.
I get the concept of gray man but if you are forced to bug out then chances are so are a lot of others. I doubt that the type of bag you are using is of much thought to anyone else in times like that. Tactical looking bags would be considered normal with that type of a scenario
Given his setup he should just use a regular store bought water bottle like a lot of light weight hikers and keep a full one instead of an empty bottle.
After a recent revelation of my own regarding the whole "light is the way to go" mentality I've come to realize that mentality is great for a "car bag" but for your main bag it is idiotic, you're unnecessarily introducing struggle into a situation in which you're struggling. Contrary to what he said in the beginning of the video I've come to realize that some of the people most equipped to ACTUALLY bug out are backpackers themselves, the backpacking community has been doing essentially "simulated bugging out" for decades we just call it camping, which if you look at most real world refugee situations that's basically all you're doing, you're camping (whether urban or rural) until you can get to a better situation. Everybody talks about being a "gray man" and while there definitely are things to make yourself less noticeable, if you have any sort of backpack in a situation where people are desperate, you're gonna be a target regardless of whether or not your pack has molle straps. It seems like everybody wants to be a gray man but if we know that everybody wants to be a gray man then that literally makes nobody a gray man because you're no longer gonna ignore the gray man. I think you should build a bug out bag out like a camping backpack first and then start to tailor it slowly towards niche applications such as bugging out, that's how you'll get the best result that you'll actually feel like going out on weekends to test instead of just throwing in you're closet and claiming "I'm prepared". I absolutely due think that you should either work on your fitness enough or tailor your bag in a way that you can still run with it on, but a big bag like the type he disregarded in the beginning isn't inherently bad by itself
Why would a national park be a bad idea? I know a ranger station near by, only used for housing during wild fires. I figure if there’s enough shit in my truck to survive then I just need long term shelter.

The additional bag to carry gear kinda voids your theory against carrying big bag and being target however if you had an additional person with you then it'd be a go. I agree to carry extra bag though even can use for a stuffed pillow.
I agree and was thinking of mentioning your exact points. The backup bag is only 20 L so it is very compact and low profile. It would definitely be great to give it to an additional person or use it as a pillow. Thank you for the feedback.
A lot of good ideas here. Highly disagree with the shelter though. I almost think you are pranking us with that shelter. Get some cordage. Ditch the mylar. Maybe look into the SOL escape bivvy if you are set on that philosophy of use. "If I can't see the threat, it doesn't exist...." I'm sure you know you have to tie the hood of the poncho off if you're going to use it as a tarp, right? Right?!
Things like these are personal lol, and if it works for you thats all that matters. Something I do have to ding you on are your nods, well not actually those but you don't have any protection for them besides the ziplock bag. I actually hand make an nvg carrier thats molle attachable, water resistant, dust proof, padded, and the best part.....it has faraday fabric inside it. This will protect electronics inside the bag from electromagnetic radiation, as well as rfid, HEMP, cellular, tracking, and hacking. I also make them in whatever colors you would like, I do have some milspec 500D cordura in wolf gray 😉 I didnt only comment for this reason lol it was your accent if you want to call it that 🤣 where abouts are you from?
