There was a brief moment during this crazy night that I thought it might be my last. Things got really crazy when we got caught up in a snowstorm at High Camp, en route to the summit of Mount Vinson, Antarctica's tallest mountain.

Eva, you might appreciate a book by Richard Byrd, the arctic explorer, called Alone. He spent 6 months living in a remote shack by himself in Antarctica to collect weather data. Of course he endured many storms. His books on his expeditions in Antarctica and the work done at his settlement, Little America, are also riveting and fascinating!

As someone who has done a lot of camping.. that heavy wind and seeing that tent go wild... yeah. that would scare anyone. Much respect to you. It will be an epic memory for life.

Sure, but it helps to be aware of the risk. I think however storms with lightning in the moutains are more scary. Happend to me twice, then you know all electronics need to be turned off, and lay to ground hoping for the best.. Sometimes its so bad, you need to even go out of the tent and lay low in the grass..

@@Gaudine When i was in the army i had bags to bring with, sometimes i still do that, or i simple burry it down with UL showel. Eitherwise Bidet or Eco Friendly wipes. Girls normally ise a antimicrobial wipe on nr.1

The greatest moment of any human life is the moment when death becomes real-the certainty that death is near and “I” will be no more. There is a sweetness added to life from then on that is worth any cost. Sadly, few civilized humans experience it any more, which explains our incredibly hollow, shallow, meaningless and empty lives chasing after any sweetness to life at all-searching in all the wrong places and coming away only more empty. You are a very fortunate human! Thank you for giving back and being a beacon to the path of the truly good life.

I got caught in a tent in 40+ MPH winds in Oregon and my tent was blowing away with me in it. I was SO GLAD to have my parents’ trailer to escape to! I can’t imagine what a terrifying experience this was!

yeah i had a similar one - I just thought however that these guys had zero chance of survival outside tents during that storm. No option but to make the tents stick and work. Am not sure it was so clear for them when they decided to weather out that storm on the mountain.

@@MaximusMerideus first, credit to the guides to keep a stove, etc., in their tent. As for survival, it's a fair question but think, what if her tent went the same way as the cooking/dining tent, rolling down the hill with you inside in 60 MPH winds. 1. off the edge of a cliff. 2. If it was snowing, you might end up in a valley covered totally but in the nice warm sleeping bag. Hind sight; reduce the surface are of the dining tent (lay it down) and build a round igloo out of square blocks.

@@MaximusMerideus What I meant is they wouldnt be able to walk down in that storm alive if they lost their tents. As for sleeping without, I think the only way to make it would be if they had some loose snow and they could dig themselves into the snow completely (or had the time and energy to build a snow hut). The sheet on the frame keeps the wind chill off them and retains some of the heat from their breath. I don't think you can survive in sleeping bags only without snow or ice cover.

I can remember spending a night in a storm when the poles snapped and had to use my feet as the main centre pole for a couple of hours while the walls slapped my face consistently. Well done to you for giving us such inspiration & sharing.

How did you manage to record so much footage in such cold conditions? Did you bring 100 batteries or several power banks? I imagine there was no random power plug somewhere around 😅

I also wondered this. I don't know how GoPro batteries perform in such cold temps, but I'm sure they can't last very long. I'm honestly surprised they worked at all.

@@jima1135 yeah, right? I just came back from a trip where I ran through 5 GoPro batteries in a day, with temperatures barely falling below -15 Celsius. And even then, the camera would just die on me frequently, so I am really positively surprised about the amount of footage gathered here

Today in the UK, we were struck by storm Eunice with winds between 50 and 90 miles an hour. I fully appreciated the fact that we were safe and sound in a brick house with central heating and double glaze windows. On the Tv they announce The Isle of White had a record breaking storm winds of 122 MPH . I thought our storm was bad but nothing like yours, glad you have come through it safe and sound. Must have been terrifying.

Watching this, and the circumstance with the heavy winds blowing violently on a remote, frozen, uninhabitable continent far away from civilization and comfort, really does put into perspective how good we ultimately have it. I am sure that since you left Antarctica, it really allowed you to open your eyes to what is important and what isn't being back home. Much respect and adoration Eva 🙌🏻

I feel exactly the same way as you do. Im living in a tropical place where we battled with storms every single year. But Eva’s experience in a tent in the middle of nowhere below freezing point made me sick worried that they could be blown anytime soon. It scares the hell our of me! And yes isn’t that insanity for wanting more?

@@avenuesaco9532 It really scared me, too. I wouldn't call it insanity - I just think there are some people wired to feed off of adrenaline and our fearless adventurer Eva is one of them. I've never looked at a mountain and said "I want to climb that." I'm more the "I'd like a table with the mountain view" type. I'm all about stepping out of comfort zones in a general sense, but to push my body to the limit or place myself in life-threating situations where I'll possibly freeze, plummet to my death or be food ... yeah, NO THANKS. I'm just glad there are people like Eva who share their travels like she does. Now I don't have to second-guess my hesitancy - if I watch an experience and have such a visceral reaction to the danger, it's a validation of my caution. My clearly non-existent inner adrenaline junky can live vicariously through these vlogs.

In Boy Scouts we have been taught that in the event that you are in a snow-laden area & you do not have a tent, the best thing to do to keep out of winds & keep warm is to make a snow cave which is basically a personal igloo. Keeping the principle of the igloo in mind, shoring up the sides of the tent with snow as high as possible would help in blocking the wind & thus puts less strain on the tent. Something to consider in such a snow storm.

Eva, glad you are okay to talk about it. I have been stuck some times in the past that could not go forward or backward and had to just stay hunkered down. It is so so easy to lose you way only 100 feet away from the camp and get disoriented where you can hardly see any landmark. I don't know how well GPS works down there and and leaving "trail breadcrumb" here is out of question with that crazy wind. I sure wished to have been there as this is experience of life time. Be safe and looking forward to your successful return to civilization.

Yeah it's pretty crazy here in Germany right now 😅 We have had some gusts of up to 130kmh in the last couple of hours, but at the coast I heard things are way worse

Bro, 6 degrees Celsius and 122mph gust in a house feels better than -35-45 degrees C and 60mph gust in a tent, in Antarctica. In Isle of Wight, people were in their protected by warmed houses whereas those people were out in Antarctica, protracted by... tents. The worst that could happen to those brits is to be temporarily cut off from water and energy supply. In Antarctica, the worst is that you'll freeze and die.

Totally different in an house or building which are designed to resist it and besides only 122mph in some places and mostly not, besides it's only news because it was England, much faster speeds have been recorded in Wales and Scotland.

I would have dug a shallow pit in the snow/ice and put the tent up in that. Lots more wind protection, particularly when you back fill with snow to fill any spaces. It was clear that little bit of ice you put around the tent wasn't going to do much. Rather you than me in such an environment, I'm designed for heat, not cold.

I like the idea of digging the floor out then putting the tent in the hole--if the tent is deep enough the wind would overshoot you but the next danger would be freezing you over and suffocation .. so, thanks for taking me along with you, the video is all of Antarctica experience I'll ever need

I understand that the after storm feeling was amazing but is it worth to put yourself in really life risking situations, only that you can feel thrilled again and feel truly alive? Don't get me wrong, I fully understand the adrenaline rush and the exhilaration after an event like this but seeking it, for the feeling of it... I don't know! (yes I'm probably a scaredy cat lol) Anyway, with all my heart I wish you safe travels and adventures, you are a special and very strong person with a big heart, enjoy your life dear one!

I really felt your anguish during this video, & although I saw last week that you did reach the summit, l shared your relief in surving this experience. I agree with you, keep on truckin'. Thanks for the information you shared previously about when you couldn't get your Defender to start, and it was something you could sort out by pressing your key fob twice. My cousin has just had the same problem with her Freelander, she was going to be waiting for hours for breakdown to arrive. We watched your video, tried what you had done, and it worked!!
