Bob Denver, Dawn Wells, Natalie Schafer, Alan Hale, Jim Backus and Russell Johnson, thank you all for the memories. I grew up watching Gilligan's Island and loving it. Time does indeed fly, as my grandmother used to say, but I'll always be able to tune in and laugh and smile just as I did so many years ago. Thank you for all you did and for such wonderful memories. You're truly missed. RIP
Thank You Mary Anne, I was born in 1963, so came home every day after school in Australia to watch Gilligan's Island - LOVED IT!! What a wonderful Child Hood
I had the most wonderful event happen to me. When my parents took me Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel for my 18th Birthday Alan Hale actually sang "Happy Birthday" to me with his staff. I'll never forget that experience. He was a wonderful man and will always be in my heart. R I P Alan and to all those that we lost
I met Alan Hale when I was a kid on vacation at a resort bar & game room outside of Tomahawk Wisconsin. Had no idea who he was but my Dad was having a drink with him at the bar and when I went over to get more nickles for the games my Dad said "Son this is Mr. Hale". I just said something like hi or nice to meet you. Then my Dad said "He's the Skipper on Gilligan's Island". Mr. Hale looked at me and said "How many nickles do you need little buddy?". I am 64 years old now but still clearly remember that day.
I was in the second grade when Gilligan's Island debuted. I have fond memories of my dad and I watching it. My mother thought it was ridiculous but my dad loved it. He loved slapstick. Then, as a teenager, I remember watching the reruns. So nice to take a trip back to a much simpler time! I loved growing up in the sixties.
My Husband and I met Dawn Wells at the Minnesota State Fair a few years ago. Never have I met a Sweeter Person and her and I talked as if we were old Friends! She gave such High Regards of Russell Johnson, well All the Guys and Natalie! This was so bittersweet to watch. I grew up on Gilligan's Island. My brother's and I watched it all through our childhood and when ever the world becomes a scary place, I search for Gilligan's Island reruns!! Now they are all gone except Tina Louise. Dawn Wells would have lived much longer if not for Covid! Even at her age when we met her, she was Spunky, such a Breath of Fresh Air! So Very Missed! ❤️
What has the Monkees Davy Jones have to do with Bob Denver? About Davy Jones, he never kept any turtle as a house pet back then during late 1965. Even Peter Tork never kept any turtle as a house pet. Every public spectacle has a different interest. 🐢 😒 🙄 😤 😐 😑 🐢
Did you notice that there were not too many Gilligan's Planet cartoon episodes compared to what's it compared to all of other cartoon shows? What I just didn't tell you is that I've added one extra character for the Gilligan's Planet cartoon series since the former Newsweek magazine newsreporter John Leland has insulted Professor Roy Hinckley just for not having a roommate. That extra character is the long, straight, white blonde hair crystal blue eye 5 ft. 6 black American woman named Teresa Dortch. She's the size of an Olympic gymnastics athlete. I passed her off as the 8th castaway.
thanks for sharing. I always suspected she was a very nice person in real life. Nice to have that confirmed. Sad that only Tina Louise is left. RIP to the rest of the cast.
The Golden age of television. I don't think it will ever return. But at least we have the hilarious, entertaining reruns, and insightful documentaries.
How could it return? Have you seen this latest crop of "actors"? Even if the actors grew into the rolls given them there is the fundamental problem of good writing! Without a good script it may not be worth watching, even one time. I feel the movie medium is producing products. It used to be an art. -ARS GRATIA ARTIS- ART FOR ARTS SAKE... Those are some beautiful words...
This is such a wonderful documentary. I had seen it twice before (years ago), and I was so happy to stumble across it again. Gilligan's Island was already in syndicated reruns years before I started watching it as a child, but it has always held a special place in my heart. I had the great pleasure and privilege of meeting Dawn Wells in person back in 2005, and she truly was "Mary Ann". You couldn't have asked for a sweeter, kinder, more ebullient soul. It's hard to believe there is only one "castaway" (Tina Louise) who is still with us. However, the wonderful legacy of laughter that those 7 people and genius creator Sherwood Schwartz left behind ensures that none of them will ever truly leave us--and that is something for which I will always be very grateful.
Fun group. Dawn Wells is AWESOME. Such a classy woman, from start to finish, literally the embodiment of the word. If you haven't seen a documentary on her, check it out.
Bravo! Excellent production. For many of us "old timers", Gilligan's Island defines a big part of our childhood memories. Good, clean fun without politics or vulgar sexuality. That's why it was so popular then, and now.
She was quite beautiful. In 1959, Wells was crowned Miss Nevada and represented her state in the Miss America 1960 pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_Wells
@@vivalarazausarmyvet4453 Who told you that garbage? Everybody died of 'Covid' in the last 2 years, whether they really had it or not. How do you think they increased the numbers? Why do you think the idiot in NY put Covid patients in the nursing homes, without emptying them first? To spike the numbers that wouldn't go higher normally. Think about it!
What's going on is that you have to have the tools to create the Gilligan's Planet comic book series. That's all there's to it. I finally found out that the SS Minnow was named after the F.C.C. Chairman named Newton M. Minnow, back then in 2023. It's true that Newton M. Minnow has possessed poor judgment on good comedy shows. All I know is that he's going to have a lot to complain about about this 1990s Fox comedy show called In Living Color. 👨⚖️ 🤔 👩⚖️
I just didn't mention to Dawn Wells that Nicholas M. Skinner is much worse than I was. Especially when he treated Halloween a lot like as if it were his favorite holiday.
Loved how bob denver stood up for dawn wells and Russell Johnson when the producers listed them as the rest and he said he would walk if they didn't get equal billing. And he was really pissed off when dawn was not on the cover.Stand up guy supporting his co-stars
We didn't have TV where I grew up, or at least TV that could be seen. Lots of static and snow on the screen. I learned most of what was on TV from the kids at school who had TV and would talk about the latest episodes. I have only seen this show, Happy Days and Charlies Angels in reruns, I am an avid reader tho.
💥💥💥 At the time I was able to see this tribute to the whole cast and production team writers and all involved the public comment button is off. 😔. However in the event that anyone involved may hear this Thank You for This marvelous piece of work you Brought us fans, THANK YOU ! This work brought me Joy, out loud laughter and loving tears to my eyes. Again, Thank You All and God Bless every one of You. Truly Heart Felt.
absolutely. and Dawn was the glue of kindness and loyalty to all the cast who became close friends. true. look it up. she set the standard for how all the actors kept in touch. it was all Dawn's doing.
I remember in grade one in 1965, all the kids talking about the latest episode the night before. I absolutely loved the show then and still do 56 years later.
I met Dawn Wells in person at a parade where she was the Grand Marshall in Garden Grove, CA, about 9-month's before her death from covid-19. She was a TOTAL SWEETHEART at the meet-and-greet afterwards.
The ending brought tears to my eyes. They're all gone except for Tina. I, as millions of others, grew up with this show. RIP Bob, Alan, Dawn, Russell, Jim, and Natalie.
I think part of the reason it's sad seeing the stars you watched growing up all dying is that it feels like a part of you is dying as well being they were (technically) part of your life. Even more, it is a reminder that at some point in time the clock will strike the hour on us all. Sad but is what it is.
Sitting here with tears in my eyes, I will always remember this show... I share my memories with my grandchildren, and talk about the crush that I always had on Marianne... God bless you all and may we meet again one day in heaven
you all probably dont give a damn but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb forgot the login password. I appreciate any help you can give me!
She will most likely never know how many of our lives she impacted, so many of us she was our ideal girl perfect, nobody could disagree she was always the kindest soul, and money just can't buy that.
All this time and I just stumbled upon this amazing documentary now. I’m 56 but feel like I’m 10 years old again after watching this documentary. I absolutely loved this show. Couldn’t wait to get home from school, grab a snack and watch Gilligan reruns. Gilligan’s Island brought me a much needed escape from a not so good home life. RIP castaways. Thank you for the amazing memories
This brought tears to my eyes-this was one of my favorite shows growing up and I still LOVE the reruns.THANK YOU for all the laughs, and memories, and for the wholesomeness of the show-unlike today where all they have is junk on tv. God Bless you all and those who are no longer with us RIP. Thank you to the entire crew you are truly missed and forever in our heart. P.S. It makes me upset that they didn't get ROYALTIES and instead were cheated out of what was theirs and the writers.
What a show and what a cast! Dawn will always be my favorite. Grew up on the re-runs and born in '70. This was an incredible glimpse in to their real lives and a show that i hold dearly. The goofiness still makes me giggle. Good times!
Can't believe just how much I enjoyed watching this documentary. The perfect cast to recreate one of the best TV shows ever. As for the original cast, we miss you all and will never forget your gift to us.
not really for this idiot(me), but I came around. I was always on the Ginger side. Then I married one, then divorced. My second wife is a Mary Ann. Wow was I dumb in the past. So, you are correct except for ALWAYS - some of us have to wise up later on in life.
@@spotperf Ginger, much like a Ferrari, was always very expensive, very high maintenance, and likely to suffer a break-down if she didn't get what she demanded. You seem happy with your Mary Ann... so kudos to you and count your blessings.
I think Tina was actually a little jealous of Mary Ann, but yes, you're right - always Mary Ann. She had no reason to be jealous though - look up God's Little Acre - watch it and see if you don't agree that Tina Louise was one of the hottest, smoking hot women ever on the silver screen.
The guy playing the skipper, nailed his voice! I met Alan Hale Jr on two separate occasions. He was the nicest person you’d ever want to hang out with. Sad that he’s gone..
My only brush with a celebrity was when Alan Hale Jr. hugged my mother when she was expecting me. As a little kid, I'd be glued to Gilligan's Island, feeling like I had a special connection with AHJ because of the story. When he died, it was like losing an uncle I never met. Of course he wasn't an uncle and we never had met, but somehow 'the hug' was woven into my life story from the start. Glad to hear someone else talk about how nice he was - I might have to rewrite the story in my head if he'd been a big jerk!
@@OhPleaseMary It was well known in Hollywood, what a great guy Alan was. I met Barbara Hale, who played Della Street, on Perry Mason. She knew him quite well and had co stared with him in some god awful, low budget horror film, back in The 70’s. As they had the same last name, he called her ‘his little sister’ whenever he saw her on the set. She raved about what a big sweet teddy bear he was. She herself was amazingly nice.
@@paulnicolosi4792 I love that story! So rare anymore to find actors who are as down to Earth. My mom still talks about meeting him at a golf tournament in Pebble Beach, CA in 1963 and just how fun he was - she says she was hugely pregnant and he caught her eye and made a beeline for her to talk about their 'matching bellies' and that he had the biggest laugh and the warmest hug of all! Thanks for sharing that great story with me! ❤️
Gilligan's island should b put n th History books, Happy Days, n Lavergn n Shirley, n th Brady Bunch....This was th best days of my life, watching all of these great shows...I'm so glad ya'll did what u did...Thank u...
I'm going on 64 years old I loved coming home from school and watching Gilligan's Island. I never knew this story was told until tonight when I watched this.. Excellent... never knew Tina Louise was such a hard ass and I bet Dawn Wells was probably the only one that could work with her and stick around I mean God bless them. They're just regular folks like us with real problems but I really do miss them all.
I saw this when it aired 20 years ago. Ending made me cry then, and certainly made me cry even more today now that Bob, Russell, and the eternally beautiful Dawn have also left us. Thank you for the upload.
Thanks for that info. I was about to look it up after just finishing it. I thought it was absolutely brilliant. My siblings and I grew up on all these shows. But this one has always held the most dear memories. Mary Anne all the way!!!!!
Brought tears to my eyes, I never knew about Jim Backus's Parkinson's difficulties. They are and were all great talents brought together for a special creation. I miss Dawn Wells especially and think of her often
An excellent behind-the-scenes look at the show. The actors were spots on. RIP Jim, Natalie, Alan, Bob, Russell, and Dawn. You are and will be missed...
Not really. It paints Tina in a unflattering inaccurate light. The actress who plays her (Kristen Dalton) doesn't even bother to accurately act and talk more Tina did. Dalton is as poor as Judith Baldwin was playing Ginger in 1978.
@@Garsons-oq4lh From all I've heard, Tina could be a real bitch. And her old cast members seem to agree. To be fair, she was, (& i believe still is) trying to be a working actress.
@@Garsons-oq4lh Well, that's what you get if you don't want to participate in the documentary or anything to do with the show. Really her own fault, I say.
Thank God for reruns the cast will never be forgotten and will be loved by people for evermore and missed by those of us that have watched ever since the beginning !
I stayed watching this show when I was 5- in 1970. Everytime it was coming on,in the part of the song when it thunders loudly, Dad,Mom and me would clap our hands real real loud. I'm now 57 and still do. And I insist everyone watching with me does the same. Such great memories!
This was so heartwarming and nostalgic! The cast really portrayed the original cast perfectly, and it was lovely to see the originals again. RIP to all who have passed.
Hard to believe that such a seemingly stupid show has lasted so long and will outlive all of us. Hardest one for me to lose was Mary Ann. She only got more and more beautiful as the years went by. Thank-you for this excellent ride back to a better time. It's much appreciated.
It was a great little show. It was innocent and childish. I think that's why us older folks ( I'm 60 ) like to reminisce over It. Dawn had a beautiful soul, and was sincere.
Well I never knew this was made. And 20 years later still a fitting tribute to our childhood memories. Glad they did it. I guess we just lost Dawn a year ago, I do recall reading about that I guess I’m sad today as I was when I heard about it. Jim Bacchus was a national treasure. And these folks left a legacy few of us will have the opportunity to do. Thanks crew and castaways. And in some ways we all are a family, of fans because of some old friends from TV.
I’m 59 grown man and cried at end when Mr Howell left set such wonderful show me and my Brother used watch Great Memories GodBless too Crew ❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏
Never knew this documentary was there. I grew up watching Gilligans Island and still enjoy watching the reruns !! What a wonderful family classic. It will forever be in my memories and a childhood past. God bless the entire crew of Gilligans Island !! Thank you for the memories,
It's now March 4th, 2022. This documentary is already 21 years ago. Dawn Wells left us December 30, 2020 (aged 82). Such a timeless, wholesome beauty. Never posed nude, never a swear word in a movie, never a scene of alcohol or substance abuse. She will always be Mary Ann Summers to us. R.I.P. Lovely Child of Almighty God.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms Wells in early 2018. In the few minutes I held her attention, she was the most caring and concerned person I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.
A timeless piece of 60s Americana that brought laughter and smiles into living rooms across America and the world as it has never been out of syndication. Thanks to all the cast members and Sherwood Schwartz for so many wonderful memories!
I grew up in the 60's and would come home from school to watch Gilligan's Island. I remember the original Black and White season and then moving to color and changing the title song. Every adventure was fun and entertaining. Although it may have been considered "Silly" by so many, the idea of creating a family from such a varied background of characters is what made it so popular then as it is today with my own children and grandchildren who all have the boxed set of the whole series. This documentary with Dawn, Bob and Allen is a reminder of good days of laughter and a moment away from the hectic life today. Thank you for sharing this so we might all remember and enjoy the past which is still somewhat relevant today in 2021. RIP to all of those who have crossed on. Your acting in this show has impacted millions if not into the billions now. I always identified with Bob Denver, he was my idol.
I was in second grade when this show came out and I remember standing in line waiting to be released from school and all the kids were so excited because Gilligan's Island was going to be on that evening! Weird that I remember that!
We need silly in our lives - seems that today's performers, for the most part, think vulgar and put-downs are funny. One of the many wonderful things about this series was there were no put-downs, nothing off-color, and just plain silly and funny. No "lessons" to teach, only pure entertainment. Even the skipper's impatience with Gilligan ws done with love and respect.
Dawn Wells was at a hotel in Edmonton, Canada where I was staying. I gave her a Maple leaf brooch, I saw her in a hall. I said, “Oh cool your wearing my pin” then she gave me a kiss on my left cheek. I was a teen and fell in love with her. I miss her R.I.P. Ms. Well ):
The casting and format for this documentary fit the show and its documented content perfectly. The factoids seem largely more authentic then other show documentaries I've seen too, few embellishments...
@@forrestgreene1139 That's E.J. Peaker, that is! Look her up. She was great in a couple of 1970's shows as well as 'Love American Style'. Better actor than the roles she was allowed to play back then. Prove it to yourself by watching the part about the breast cancer. A shame another what might-have-been didn't happen for her. I hope she took that talent to Broadway, at least once.
She even commented back to me and so many others online.i know it's not a huge deal, but watching the show when I was a kid,and the having her reply, was cool- I've met hugely famous people having worked in television, but Dawn wells seemed so nice!
I'm sorry that we all lost such good people this was fun as it gets but it didn't deceive me for a single second as i was growing up watching these but i did watch because you all were so much like a good family better then my own so i fell in love with you all and it was mary-ann all the way she was a girl you could count on as a friend or a lover (wife type) to be there in the mix in all things good or bad and have you're back all the ways through then we see lovie howl saving that gals life man wishing you all the best but professor I'd have been responsible and gotten everyone off that island in less then one week myself i believe you're answer was morally wrong as to why you never did that it points to a much darker side to you that holding them hostage on an island could even be considered at all i understand why the plot called for it but yeah I've had issues with that since i first seen the show and almost stopped watching due to that factor so i written it off to you being a less than able man of science then you'd bast that to kingdom come and invent something else to help but never get off that island hell i could have distilled rubbing alcohol in place of gas and built a raft using the minnows motor to get them all to safety in one week with those palm trees at age 6 as much as i was raised on science by then as well as the for the skipper i had by a naibor learned at the same time sea man ship with zero modern technology sun shots and all to anywhere they needed to go state side so the whole thing while charming completely improbable to my young mind only the hearts of those involved saved this show for me even at this young of an age and that was over 34 years ago for me... So marry-ann here's to you and mr denver and the howls while you other two were still lovable made the whole thing impossible to believe as 🎅 or bigfoot and unicorns but personally ms ginger was a blatant schemer so she always rubbed me the wrong way I'm more impressed by what she did with her life after this show and this has redeemed her in my eyes as she's worked with so many young people love you all for you're heart's always
Suzanne Robertson that’s funny because I was born in a hospital in Pasadena in1954 . Pretty sure Los Angeles and San Diego had numerous hospitals with a lot scattered around them . Maybe you meant 1858 ? 😂
Bob Denver passed away 4 years later, September 2, 2005, in Winston-Salem, NC at age 70 & Dawn Wells passed away in December 2020 at age 82 due to complications to Covid-19.
Wow how did i miss this wonderful funny gem. Yes its hard when anyone of cast passes...but for some reason losing mary ann was like the end of the innocence 💔💔💔💔
I absolutely love the entertaining and unique way that this was written, filmed & edited.... great job to all involved in front of and behind the camera.
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for posting this for not just for those of us who grew up with probably the best ensemble cast of all time; but, also, for those who are going to grow with them today. BRAVO!
Dawn Wells was such lovely soul. Rather than be bitter for being typecast, she truly embraced the persona and made it her own. I know it may have been solely for public consumption, but unlike Tina Louise, she never complained about it. She never regretted it.. She was truly my adolescent crush. Such a lovely person.
I have all the episodes in my library, but haven't watched them since I was a kid. After watching this documentary I think I'll dust them off and experience them once again, but this time with new eyes and with a greater degree of appreciation.
Absolutely awesome. Clicked on this to watch a few minutes, and watched the entire thing. Years ago, I bought the entire DVD set for my kids from the 'professor' (who signed the set!). They are now in their 20s and can quote bits at the drop of a hat. When my kids were teenagers and visiting at a friend's house, and wanted to break the ice with their friend's parents, they'd bring up Gilligan's island. Never failed. My son loved asking the dads: "So....Ginger or Maryanne?" He loved their reaction!
This was a such a great video production. It really did a wonderful job of marrying the actual actors with dramatic/comic recreations. Plus the touching ending. Well done!!!
One of my favorite memories was when mary ann, ginger and lovey performed YOU NEED ME as the HONEYBEES which you can find on RU-vid...such a 1960s retro flashback...adorable ✌✌✌❤❤❤🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🧚♀️🧚♀️🧚♀️
Same here. Never knew this existed but I'm sure glad it's on here. This was a wonderful presentation that, sad as it may be, tells the story behind the real people we all watched on television long ago before the world turned into the mental asylum it is today.
Thank you so much for this touching and informational tribute to a Show I loved and my kids loved in reruns. One of my sons taped every episode, one night he and I got so sick that we camped out on the couch together watching those reruns all night, it really helped us get through a rough night. He still, like me, loves Gilligan’s Island. We loved you all and Thank You for all the laughs. Peace and Love to you all and especially to the man who created the show and fought for it. ❤️✨💫🙏
It looks like Bob Denver was great guy and a true Dawn Wells fan. So great to see how he insisted Dawn get equal attention as Tina. Makes me think so highly of him.
That was a great little documentary from 23 years ago. Of the original cast, only Tina Louise is still alive (age 89) as Feb 2024. Like most other kids in the 1970s I watched this show and loved it. It was silly but accessible and funny. And well ahead of its time: there are now many shows that are equally silly and escapist, helping people relax and laugh despite the hardship and sorrows of life.
I've seen this movie several times (I have it on DVD) and it's always a lot of fun. As for Alan Hale: He was my dad's golf buddy back in the '70s and I had the opportunity to meet him. Mr. Hale was a sweet, lovely man...just as you'd expect him to be!
This is a REALLY good telling of personal stories from the people that played these amazing roles. I actually got a little misty-eyed when stories of our favorite actors' passing brought the show to a close.
And she looks like absolute hell. Tina was so adamant about getting the hell off the show but it's interesting how you never heard about her anymore after that. Hope it was worth all the complaining she did.
@@ComputerLearning0 She has continued to work throughout her career, but in minor parts. They say, "There are no small parts, but then there is Tina Louise ".
@@lorimiller4301 I doubt Tina would have lowered herself to watch this documentary but I wonder what she thought about it because you know someone would have brought it to her attention, and the fact it doesn't portray her very well, it really makes you wonder how Tina felt about it. I'm sure she hated it just like she hated appearing in a series she thought was supposed to be about HER. Some people are never satisfied :>\
My dear friend, the late Andy Hallett, had been working on the set of Angel for 2 seasons. We had met when I was a karaoke host at the Queen Mary Showlounge in Studio City. After booking his show as Lorne, he would make a point to still stop by whenever he got the chance. One night in 2001, he came in with this lovely lady with charm and a dazzling smile. They shared the same agent. He introduced her as Dawn Wells! Gobsmacked would be an understatement. I asked if could hug Mary Ann as that had always been a dream of mine. She graciously accepted. What a doll! They stayed for about 2 hours and she talked with fans. Grace and class. Her death from Covid hit me hard. RIH castaways!
They really did an amazing job casting this, I simply loved the Jim Backus character especially but all of these were extraordinary choices. I never knew what a conscientious person Bob was, wow I like him even more and I adored him before.
