The blast engineer for hole in the rock was my great great grandfather Benjamin Perkins. Ben was a born in the UK doing mining jobs starting at the age of 8. He started working with dynamite not long after. In the UK he joined the LDS church and took a train to Salt Lake. He was called by church leaders to help colonize southern Utah. He took his wife and went with the wagon party down to the area where they’d create hole in the rock. There’s not a whole lot of information on how he created the hole in the rock in terms of engineering and design. Ben didn’t have an education since he was working in mines his whole life, but he designed the suspended tracks and perfectly measured the blast holes to allow the tracks that’d allow the wagons to go down the cliffs and gullies. They used ropes and pulleys to bring the carts down safely. I guess you could say I’m proud. Haha!

15 yr old driving my truck home from visiting my girlfriend, had no money lol ? taken short cut on old dirt trail and found out when truck was on E it was EMPTY !, i WALKED 3.5 MILES AT MIDNIGHT to the nearest paved road with a house to borrow gas, cloudy no stars no moon, but occasional bursts of lightning that aloud me to count far more Rattle Snakes than I had seen , oh lets not forget the Panthers I heard sounding like a girl screaming. The hog farmer gave a ride & 3 gallons, in return I paid him with 3 days of planting squash & peppers & helping with the hogs. I have never run out of fuel again. that was over 50 years ago. That is a beautiful area/trail. Been there a couple of times. It's about as remote an area as you can find in the continental US. Gotta be prepared, fuel, water, whatever. You did the #1 thing IMO, you didn't go alone. That shelf road onto Grey Mesa has some pucker factor. The history of the Mormon pioneers that crossed that route is almost unbelievable. Our ancestors were hardier folk than people today.
