I head up to Truckee California to ride out a historic blizzard with my friend @AdventureTimeLoui Merchandise: foresty-forests-store.creator... Summit Map: drive.google.com/open?id=12GF... / strava / forestyforest
Yea, first thing that came to mind was an old southpark episode of them being trapped in a gym and Donner events happened.... switching movies..... Did you have some Chianti with your chilli? (
Both of y'all have awesome content. Big fan of both in South Carolina. Awesome friendship it seems. Be careful and stay safe. Oh yeah! Loui is breathtaking beautiful. Just saying.
Dear Foresty I have been a fan of your channel for years now. But guess what my kids (ages 4 and 9) have become such big fans of your videos that every weekend they ask me to check YT if a new episode has dropped. Your videos make them so calm and peaceful and they particularly love seeing Rocko and your gourmet cooking. Our 4 year old keeps saying "ummmm that looks good, I'd eat that" lol. My whole family loves you man. Thank you for the peace and joy.
@@forestyforest same here. My husband started watching your channel and now every time he turns on YT I ask him to immediately check if you've dropped a new video. We love watching your videos, and especially the meals you make in the van, with your cute little woodstove. We used to live in the Yukon and love your Northern videos most of all. Stay safe out there! :)
I loved this comment how awesome that your children are enjoying such quality 'TV' and I agree with your 4 year old...'ummmm that looks good, I'd eat that!"
In the event anyone is curious, the bar above the locomotive seen at time stop 4:57 is for clearing icicles hanging inside the tunnels that separate the north Lake Tahoe area (Truckee, CA) from the Sacramento Valley to the west. Additionally, the bars/grid in front of the windshields are to prevent snow, branches or ice from damaging the glass. The Union Pacific railroad has a subset of their locomotive fleet specifically modified to traverse "Donner Pass" between Reno, NV and Roseville CA, with Truckee CA in between ... with these 2 modifications just a few of the several that allow them to surmount the pass and its winter hazards.
The trains have to keep the line clear so they use big train plows to constantly plow through the storm. That’s the main east west connection for Northern California.
@glennk.7348 Thank you for that information. That is very interesting about the train plows for snow on the train tracks. I learn something new every day on Foresty's channel!
Put silicone grease on all of your rubber door seals, which will stop them from freezing to the body and keep them soft. Use graphite lube on door locks, but only in small amounts it can make a mess, but will not collect dirt or freeze. Good luck, Mike GM Master Technician.
Thanks..! In this case, huge chunks of ice built up in the door hinge areas, filled up the inner fender too! I think snowmelt was running down from the windshield... took a few days to melt and clear out the hinges 😅
Lol, several years ago I had a "locksmith" tell me graphite destroyed locks. I looked at him and rolled my eyes and said "whatever you say". Used graphite for years, never had 1 issue on locks.
Used to live in Quebec. I love a good blizzard. I love a good train. I love dogs and wood stoves.Thoroughly enjoyed watching the snow pile up, Thanks for a very satisfying video.
A few years back in the region that Foresty comes from we had 15' snow banks and the power company had to dig out the wires in some areas. Well I call them the good ol' days as this year every good snow storm came with above freezing temps in a few days. The tree buds are flushing now, just 1.5 months too early. May be tough this year.
An honor in some ways, to the Donner party folks, those pioneers who were on their way hoping to make a better life in California. For those who survived and those who didn’t. Brave folks who traveled NEVER KNOWING what lay ahead as opposed to our luxury in this day and age of knowing there is always someone close by to help us in an emergency and having fairly accurate weather forecasts. Kudos for you and Lou. ❤
I am a Forever Summer Man, I did all the Snow I could stand in the 1978 Blizzard in Indiana as a Police Officer. Department would not allow me to go home after a 36 hour shift, put a couple of us up in a hotel, then back at it for another 24 hour shift. Now I am in late 60's and I don't tolerate the cold well, you can have that stuff.
Late 60's? Hey Youngin', I'm 76 and I had to live in Scottsdale AZ for years. I got so sick of 118 degree temperatures, sand, dust, etc! i'll take a good snow storm anytime! LOL!
Mine and my buddy’s plan before he passed was to take his van out west and fish and camp. Every time I watch your videos it reminds me of the good times and what wanted to do. Love the videos always look forward to them. Kevin from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Gotta love those blizzards! You’ve got everything you need. Cozy warm, a dog, fantastic food, entertainment and a cute girl to share it with! Cheers and thanks for sharing!
So glad that you had your friend Loui and the pups to keep each other company in a warm and cozy space through the blizzard... I love your videos, and I never miss them.
@@01hZ I'm sure this little dog has it better than 99.9 percent of dogs that are sitting alone in a giant house all day long while their "owner" is working or sitting in a tiny kennel waiting to be set free or even worse, being tied onto a chain in a backyard it's whole life.
One of my favorite videos. All that awesome snow! Trains, beautiful pine trees and the historical donner pass! Cars slipping and sliding! Dogs playing. Great sounds. Good company, eating chili and playing cards. I enjoy your narratives, and explanations and descriptions. You got it all. You are unique. Great job!
cant believe you turned a life threatening event into an exciting adventure to share. you made it look so easy and got the edited video results out without delay. another entertaining job well done.
Well, it is Sunday night down here in Sactown (down the hill a little over an hour from Truckee) --- and the storm is winding down. I watch the news of Hwy 80 being closed the last few days (I presume it is now open). It was raining like crazy here on and off --- and windy! My hat is off to you Foresty, the guy who lives in a van......
Your dog is awesome. Reminds me of my dog Willie, a Jack Russell terrier. Me and him took my truck with its home built camper on the back from Cape Cod, MA to Squaw Valley in November of 1995 to ski the winter. He was an awesome companion and was the bestest buddy in the world. I miss him so much.
I lived in Truckee in 1960. During the 1960 Olympics. It was calm until February. Then all snow broke loose. It has been the same ever since. Loved it up there!!!
You might think I am crazy but I miss Blizzards and Snow. Raised in Up State New York I use to deliver Newspapers at 12 in this Weather... dragging my Sled and later a Tobggan behind me with 121 papers.. We use to go Ice Fishing at Saratoga Lake and one year got Snowed in for 3 days a mile from our Car. Later after the Military I spent an entire Winter Camped in a Lean To not far from Floodwood Pond in the Adirondacks.. Loved it.... I was on our County Emergency Management Task Force before Retiring and the PRIORITY was for the Snowplows to open and keep open all the Primary Roads to and From the Hospitals and Fire Stations with all other Road of when we got to them priority. So in a Blizzard like this one the Plows are running steady up and down the Main Roads.... I wish I could post it, but I have a Picture of my Dad's Station Wagon parked in our driveway and the only thing you can see of it, it the flat roof. Be Safe and Stay where you are is the best thing to do... Why risk anything.. Your Friends Dog is almost a twin of my old dog.. She died in her sleep at 17 human years old..
In the Buffalo a snowstorm is fun, a blizzard is not fun. I actually think whatever caused this storm is here right now cuz it is absolutely howling out right now. I live 200 yards from the lake in Hamburg and gusts are at 50mph at the moment lol.
You missed out on last year, we had storms like this week after week, the area was buried! But glad you're very well equipped for weathering it out in your van, otherwise I'd have asked if you were nuts to stay in Truckee instead of dropping into Reno or Sparks which wasn't hit as hard, good you were close to downtown at least. As for trying to leave town, even now 80 is still closed as are most of the roads around the area. Stay warm and keep your gas tank full.
Once I started hearing about the storm I was wondering if you were far away from the area. Lo and behold you drove to the blizzard. Glad you made it through and didn't have to sacrifice William and Rocko when you made chili! Stay safe.
Such a lovely and relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon.... watching Foresty Forest videos and reading his comment section. Brilliant video, Foresty. Really enjoyed it. You are the master of your craft!
I'm 45 minutes down the hill (In fair weather), near Colfax. So glad we didn't have snow at this elevation! We had ten years worth the last two winters. Thanks for giving us a glimpse of Truckee's "Snowmageddon".
I remembered you were in the Bishop area during the storm last year and wondered, "Is FF going to be in the Tahoe area this weekend?" and there you are! Thanks for the video! Hope everyone stays safe!
I read a news article today that said higher elevations in CA would get up to 12 FEET of snow and wind gusts to 190mph! so when I saw thats where you were, I got nervous...but I should have remembered...you are the Great FF.....rational and prepared. Im glad you had a great time, Rocko seemed to be loving have a play date. Stay safe!
@@jonrajsl291 Literally Google it. You clearly have no idea about this area. 100 mph+ gusts on the ridgetops aren't uncommon, and 150+ happen during big storms. 190 was a new record I think, but it was confirmed by all the official weather stations.
Visited the Donner pass area years back. Was standing next a tree that was said to have a marker of how much snow they had received all those years ago. I looked 10-15 feet up and couldn’t find it. Until I looked up literally 35 to 40 feet. Way way up. Might have been even higher. Astonishing and astounding. The amount of snow the Sierras get is mind blowing.
I live in Carson City. And we have seen much worse in the sierras than that storm. Thanks for visiting my home area. So much beauty to see ❤ glad you stayed safe
Just found you !! I've subscribed and already Watched 7 videos.. I really like everything about you. Inspirational, interesting, great attitude! Many to catch up on. Thank you from Uk and Us.. love your precious Rocko ❤❤
Just another day in Truckee. The news always blows these things up, but for us, here in town, it's just another day. Wake up early, shovel out, go ski, come home, shovel again. Rinse, repeat.
4:58 Favorite shot of the show. Beautiful Union Pacific train engine running through the snow. Thanks for taking the time to get these awesome shots. It was sunny 65F / 18C today in Cincinnati.
It looks like whatever it was that was making Foresty's subscriber count be constipated a few months ago, has been unplugged and the flood gates have finally been opened up - as they are supposed to be! And of course, having 400K plus views on this video helps, too! Congratulations, Foresty, on your well deserved and steady increase in subscribers, and on this highly successful video!! 🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉
@snowwhiteseventrolls Well, I am not sure exactly what it was. But I am just glad to see the subscibers going up and up as they should be. Especially when Foresty's videos consistently get well over 100,000 views per video, and now over 400,000 views on this one - it makes logical sense that a certain percentage of the viewers in each video will choose to subscribe, and the number of subscribers should be rising when a video gets a high number of views!! Kudos to Foresty for his consistently great job in producing these exemplary videos!!
This is my favorite episode. It looked so much fun just camping out there next to your friend, not being far from society just seeing and feeling the snow come down. I need more videos like this
I didn't get one good snow storm to camp in this winter and I'm so bummed. Hunkering down by a warm fire during a blizzard with just my fury friend is when I find the most peace in life. It really helps me think through all the things going on in life and get my priorities back in line. For me, a few days of isolation is needed every few months just to work through all the shit in my head. It's like doing a hard reset. All of the distractions of life are gone which gives me much more clarity to prioritize what's actually important to me. I didn't realize how much a little isolation could help me until the pandemic hit and I decided to do some camping by myself rather than be locked down in my apartment building. I ended up staying 22 days (I did have to move spots after 2 weeks per the rules) in a small dome tent at a primitive camping area in a National forest with just my dog and it was life changing. I was the only one camping there the entire time and it was the most peaceful 3 weeks of my life. Besides a forest service truck driving through once a day I was completely alone. You really learn a lot about yourself that way. Typing this out really has me thinking about planning a little trip before it gets too hot out. I'd rather camp through an ice storm than a heat wave. I must have some nordic dna or something because I'm the guy in shorts and sandals all winter that never gets cold. I finished part of my basement just so I could sleeo down there because it stays about 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the house all year long. Anyways, it's nice to see at least someone's out there enjoying all that snow. I enjoy your videos tremendously. Thanks for the entertainment.
I'm very glad you are both safe and experienced in this kind of weather. I forgot that you were in that area when I saw it on the news. I'm glad you've got that wood stove 😂
I grew up in SDakota winters, we were snowed in many times, but we had everything we needed, in where it was warm. I like the idea of what you are doing, very snug and warm in your van, everything you need. Its hard for anyone to imagine the plight of the Donner party, to be in such storms without what they needed, a nightmare. Glad you are well prepared...stay safe and warm! Thanks!
You guys would make a GREAT couple. I know a “I have feelings for this girl” face when I see one Forest 😂 don’t let a golden opportunity pass you by brother!!!! This is one of those one in a lifetime opportunities!!!
Few facts a bit off. Most of the donner party was rescued by late Feb. and cannibalism was very limited and mostly happened in a group that had travelled half way to Sacramento for help. Got stuck in big snow storm and did eat some of the dead to survive.
Well, half way trough the video I havent seen any evidence of winds, so this is just a heavy calm snowfall, Nothing we truckdrivers in Sweden, Norway and Finland would consider stop driving for, exept when the snow starting coming up to a feet deep on the roads. In windy conditons its a different story, but then we talking about real windy, like a real storm or blizzard, not this relative calm snowfall with no wind at all to talk about. The secret for both truckdriver and cars? Real winter tires made for cold winter conditon like Hakapelitta, not those fecking Mud and Snow tires you americans use, that is even worse in cold weather than a Goodyear summer tire.
@@snowwhiteseventrolls Hey, please do not denigrate Scandanavia. Some of my ancestors came from there. And they do many, many things in a superior manner to the way things are done in the USA.
You have a wonderful way of photographing snow and snowy environments, I do like to watch it snow but I hate to be out in the snow and having deal with snow! Glad you all doing well and safe! I do love your wood stove and the homie environment it creates!
Let me explain it to you. These types of videos are immensely popular with the viewers. (this video was #28 on TRENDING yesterday!!) Lots of views translates into lots of money being paid out to the content creator by RU-vid. Yes, it is a challenge, but in his case, it pays very, very well.
@Jon-jk8vd Yes, living in a van in a snowed in parking lot and being cooped up for several days in a row, when there is a blizzard going on outside the vehicle is my idea of a challenging situation.
My favorite part of these snow dumps is the quietness, especially in the bigger cities. Everything just slows down and life gets quiet for 24 hours, it’s awesome. A trip to the store becomes an adventure.
This is ridiculous. You came to town just to be in the way for a storm. You're whats wrong with van lifers. Supplies are low in our area and you came up here just to use them up and be in the way of snow removal?
I'm curious if you could give examples of any supplies that ran out in your area? As well, please provide some evidence that these two vehicles were "in the way of snow removal". Honest questions.
This guy is low-key and self-contained. He is conscientious and cleans up after himself and others. He clears trails for others to use. He deserves to be cut some slack. Save your ire for the self-satisfied, Bay Area, Lahonton (and others like them) set who clog Truckee, Tahoe City, King's Beach etc all-winter and summer in their grotesque oversized BMW, Lexus and Audi SUVs, and then drive like complete and total jerks west on I-80 all the way back to the Bay Area, tailgating and making dangerous passes as they scurry back to the rat race.
