Surviving Mars is a build-y survival game about automating adorable drones on a gorgeous version of Mars, in an attempt to prepare the surface for human homesteaders. It's also great.

Yes, Jon, water can be converted to fuel with electricity; electrolysis separates the hydrogen and oxygen into hydrogen and oxygen gas, both of which are used in actual rocket fuel.

I love how Jon points to lots of things saying "that's probably not how science works" for things that are not totally unreasonable for science (even if some instances they aren't the best option), but the most obvious "that's not how science works" is completely missed: wind turbines being useful with an atmosphere as thin as the one on Mars.

Jeff C - I remember back when I was in 9th grade or so (I'm 28), Time magazine had a feature about functioning prototypes of cars which ran on water vapor. Actually Jon you can make Fuel with water in site, you only need to separate the Hydrogen from the Oxygen and now you have both the propellant and the oxidizer, a lot of rockets use Hydrogen and Oxygen as their fuel, so by using water you can make fuel, it is exactly the idea that Space X has, and the ship they used for the ships you send is actually the SpaceX BFR, which is only concept now, but it is in development stages.

SCIENCE! Earth to Mars travel time is ~7 months with a transfer window about once every 26 months (assumes Hohmann orbital transfers and that you'd want to start and end in a circular orbit). Our fastest spacecraft to date (New Horizons) could cover that distance in 39 days however that doesn't involve deceleration time so you would make a new crater when you got there if you went that fast. Time CAN be cut down with a conventional rocket (the ~7 months time frame) via a hard burn to the mid point between Earth and Mars then turning around and starting deceleration immediately. You would then land with a suicide burn. That would be incredibly expensive, obscenely dangerous, and we really shouldn't do that.

Usually Rocketfuel for a Marsmission should be Hydrazine. So N2H4. Nitrogen and Hydrogen. Nitrogen isn't quite plentiful in the marsian atmosphere, but at 2.7% it's still not ignorable. So with water providing the Hydrogen and the Atmosphere providing the Nitrogen you should be able to make a decent supply of Hydrazine as a Rocketfuel.
@chriswoodend2036
@chriswoodend2036 6 лет назад
SCIENCE! Water into fuel on Mars is actually how it could work. Water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen and liquefied, some of the oxygen can be split off for breathable air or other industrial applications with the hydrogen and remaining oxygen combined into H2O2, the fuel that was used by the space shuttle orbiter and the upper stages of a variety of orbiters. Carbon can also be extracted from the atmosphere and combined with hydrogen to formulate hydrocarbons, in turn, refined into kerosene. If a small volume of additional resources (sulfur, etc) can be located that carbon can be refined into RP-1 and combined with oxygen to make first stage fuels. So LOX (liquid oxygen) + RP-1 gets you off Mars, LOX + Hydrogen gets you from Mars back to Earth. All you need to find is the water ice and tiny amounts of a few other chemicals.
@TheFranchiseCA
@TheFranchiseCA 6 лет назад
Sulphur is easier to come by on Mars, too.
@jeffvader811
@jeffvader811 5 лет назад
Synthesising RP-1 on Mars would be pretty energy intensive (it's a mixture of many different types of hydrocarbons, and you'd need to manufacture each on individually), considering it gives a lower performance, and the room temperature storability of RP-1 isn't as necessary on Mars given the extremely cold temperatures. Liquid methane or hydrogen would be your best bet, as they are easiest to synthesise and have pretty good ISPs.

Not so fun fact for your colonists. Nights on Mars are actually often longer relative to nights on Earth due to Mars' tall mountains casting things near them in shadow during sunrises or sunsets and without much of clouds or an atmosphere to bounce back light from the sky it's pretty dark in those shadows. Not quite nighttime dark but almost as dark.

Since each extractor needs 5 power, it might save on cable building to build a wind turbine next to each extractor and build a decentralized grid. Then when you have everything up and running you can connect the entire grid.
@ManyATrueNerd
@ManyATrueNerd 6 лет назад
Almost certainly - though I've been thinking about secondary systems too - as there are switches for both pipes and wires, so twin pipes with occasional connectors and switches would be cool, so any pipe leak could be isolated, and pipes continue to work as intended. But, yes, a decentralised grid has the advantage that you can be certain priority buildings will be serviced by their own grid - maybe with a switched connection to the main grid to overflow in additional power if the local grid fails.

You can store electricity as a mechanical force. So if you wanted you could make a completely mechanical battery, that uses years, and generates power using gravity to drive the gears by having a heavy weight move downwards. Likewise you could use electricity to drive the years in reverse to raise the weight on the "battery" to store energy for later. It's just unlikely you could make such a battery as efficient as a chemical battery, however it may be in an environment like mars the upkeep of a mechanical battery to extend It's usable lifetime may be low enough to make the unit last much loknger than a chemical battery in the martial environment (just speculation)
@jeffvader811
@jeffvader811 5 лет назад
Mechanical batteries are a thing I believe, but usually they use a large spinning mass (a fly wheel) to store the energy. You can see these on old steam engines where they help smooth out the motion of the pistons.
