The drug Thalidomide was hailed as a wonder drug for pregnant women; instead it caused the world’s worst medical catastrophe and thousands of babies were born with deformities. Barry De Geest wasn’t expected to live and doctors tried to convince his mother to abandon him.

I was born in 1959. When mom complained of morning sickness, her doc suggested thalidamide. She declined. Thank God!

My mother took the drug. Bless her soul, she had no idea this would cause much suffering, teasing and life long pain and discomfort. I was fortunate to only have two birth defects. Twelve fingers and a problem with my tongue.

That little boy coming over is the sweetest thing! It's really amazing to find someone who's different like you, one of the best feelings in the world. That's why I enjoy these videos! Thank you.
@LoupGarouForte
@LoupGarouForte 7 лет назад
Agreed, finding someone like you is the best feeling in the world, you don't feel so alien and different after all. The first time I went to an Autism/Aspergers group, my boyfriend at the time came with me and this is what I think is cool is he told me afterwards that he felt like the alien being one of the few neuro-typicals in the room and I felt right at home ^^ Then there's also the Autism friendly performance of the stage show Lion King that same boyfriend took me to for my birthday, no one, and I mean NO ONE batted an eyelid when children or adults, all on the spectrum or simply Aspie, acted up, screamed or had meltdowns, it was rather like they were watching popcorn being popped "Oop! There goes one! There goes another!" And smiled like it was normal. Never in all my life had I ever felt so normal, understood and accepted, as someone with Aspergers.

I had pretty bad nausea for 5 months when I was pregnant. I probably would have taken something if offered and I was reassured that it was safe. This is heartbreaking, except for Barry and his way of looking at life, not to mention his parents, who taught him how to knock down walls so well =). What a lovely family, all of them.

My grandmother had the same morning sickness but since they’re Asian they believed a pregnant woman naturally have morning sickness and you have to just take it as it is. My mom did the same and even till I turned 16 she wouldn’t even give me paracetamol for period cramps! Sometimes some traditions save you without knowing it’s right or not.

Mr Harry is an admirable man. A man that others, both able and disabled people can look up to. Better than many with zero disability yet fail to carve out a life for themselves. Incredible man who is also very brave man to venture out into the world alone to see what he can do. So much more than my limited vocabulary is able to. A heroic man, really. A man whose mom is very proud of. Thankfully, he had a mom who loved her son and taught him well, much more so than numerous other moms! Lucky.

Barry your personality and determination is inspiring and your Mum is a true blessing. I've been sick since I was a child and I now live with my parents as I'm getting sicker fast. Nine years ago when I was 32 I was given two years to live. I've had to fight for everything I've achieved but it's made my accomplishments even better. I was a primary school teacher and a foster Mum and it broke my heart to give them up. I felt in tune with Barry when he shared his way of thinking. I'm so pleased Barry that you got to share your story because I know that you have reached many people. I saw this video when it was aired on Attitude and I'm happy to be able to tell you that you are inspiring and by having this on RU-vid you will forever be helping others. Xx

I've watched videos of Thalidamide survivors through the years. I admire them for their survivor skills, creativity in daily life but most of all, their lack of bitterness about what the drug did to them. If they are angry or bitter, they hide it very well. I do feel they should have been compensated much more than what was done. After all, the tools they require just for basic daily living are expensive. And ongoing medical expenses due to how their bodies are aging or just the wear & tear of daily living (i.e., having to hop around on their hips instead of walking normally, for instance).

I’m really glad that he had normal growing up they should not have that drug in those days so they could grow normal and have a better life his mum has been through a lot and him and for the family it was very hard for her to see her son when she was a baby I think she did the right thing to take her son and had a normal childhood and now a happy man watt a very powerful story about her son life I’m glad he gets his mum and not having a mum and putting him away from his mum and he wouldn’t see his mum and won’t know anything about his mum his mum is amazing mum to keep her son and his son had amazing childhood and she amazing to cope with his son disability 😀

This idea that his mother "wouldn't be able to cope" that the doctors and neighbors were pushing is so incredibly see through. It's actually THEM that couldn't cope... despite it only requiring a miniscule level of "coping skills". They would rather lock someone away than have themselves and the community at large simply have to deal with the fact that people like this exist.

Go for it! I'm in my room except for doctor and physical therapy appointments, and it's not good for the psyche, no matter who you are. If I wasn't depressed before... If anyone has a problem with it, it's entirely theirs. No one is a better advocate for you than you. Don't let anyone stop you from leading a fulfilling life, ever.

i was born in 1959 and moved to Georgian Bay as a child just pre kindigarden age with 4 older sisters and a brother, we happened accross a friend there Billy who was a thilidmide bay although then he was older than me my btothers age, he was a funny guy nd iyt didnt seem like he was a person wo felt different for which he was and around school and the beach he was known as someone noit to be messed with as the good arm and meg he had swas strong, i guess he became that way from all the bulling and kiddin g and stuff he dealt with in his life. as aadult in the 80's or 90's i was viviting Tornto and was down by the tds bank towers in and i heard a voice i reconized from tyhe past, then i =saw the gait of his walk and i ran over and i was Billy , selling flowers out of a flower cart surviving like anyone else, what a strong mind and person Billy is, i nevber did meet his mother or father or where he lived at the beach but they must of been suck loving paitient people that raised Billy to be confident independent and after seeing this they must off had to fight with the dr's to take Billy home..this is a great insight into what was going on

This documentary was very inspiring, but in terms of women's health, I'm gonna have no shame and keep it real. Morning sickness is hell, and I had to put up with it for 7 weeks before getting an abortion. Ironically the only things I could tolerate during that time were rum, water and cigarettes.
