“You have to have it within yourself, and whatever comes from the outside is secondary. You can cope with it, if you have someone you care for, if you have certain principles you abide by, and if you do what you feel is right and not what the world tells you to do. I think that’s more important than anything else.”
In Theresienstadt ghetto, the Holocaust historian Dr. Anna Hájková has shown, teenage Margot Heuman(n) entered a romantic relationship with a girl named Dita. After being deported to Auschwitz and Neuengamme, Margot and Dita continued their romance in the camps, and survived together.
When Margot Heuman(n) told us her story in 1994, she was not able to tell her whole story, for reasons having to do with personal preferences or interviewer lines of questioning.
More than two decades later, Margot decided to come out to her family. Between 2017 and 2022, she shared her story with Anna Hájková, who has written about Margot Heuman extensively, and even wrote a theater play together with Erika Hughes. Link: theconversation.com/lgbt-hist...
Thanks to Hájková’s work, we can now understand the traces of queer love in Margot’s early testimony.
To celebrate the first day of Pride Month, we honor LGBTQ+ survivors of the Holocaust, and recall how difficult living - and speaking - candidly was until recent years. In our Visual History Archive, which contains interviews with over 55,000 interviewees, only ~10 interviewees openly identify as queer in their interviews.
Margot and Dita remained close until Dita’s passing in 2011. Margot passed away in May 2022.

Just bc someone doesn’t agree w the LGBTQ+ community that doesn’t mean they are transphobic. Phobia is a irrational fear of something, I would say most of us are all about live and let live. We respect all but that doesn’t mean we have to believe the same way. I’m not saying this to disrespect this woman. I am happy she found love and contentment but I’m tired of people who claim victim hood are often the main ones showing hate.

Like most of us we are shaped by our life experiences, this comes through very much in Margot. It has built her personality during the very formative years of any child growing up. Those were the worst experiences that a child could endure. Margot is a strong person, a no frills lady.

I think if I was interviewing somebody and they said they watched a man step on a baby, I'd pause. I'm not sure why some interviewers don't pause to let things "sink in" I'm very relieved this woman saw a psychiatrist. I hope many survivors have. My dear interviewer, when you are starving every day there are no birthdays.

I love this interview, you can tell she is/was mentally strong 💪🏼 ❤ I love how she tell it as it was from her experience! Each survivor went through their own type of hell on earth. I always pray that each one of them had a good life after the dust settled. I admire that so many of the survivors of the Holocaust went on to finish school and so many of them not only survived but thrived. As a person that lives in south Louisiana, every single time you hear about the south it’s always something about racism. The majority of people in Deep South where I live are not racist at all, most white people here have mixed children. They do have a little racism but as a white southerner that was not raised racist at all and all the people I know aren’t racist at all. I’ve experienced more racism from people of color than the other way around but by no means do I feel like all POC are racist. The black friends that I have admitted to me many times to be careful and not trust most because they were genuinely many that could/ would harm me. I have two daughters and I raised them the same way my parents raised me. I always taught them to never just stand silent if you see/ hear someone being singled out for being different. My 19 year old daughter that is in college is in a lovely relationship with her black girlfriend for the last two years. I found out that she considered committing suicide due to worry about what other would think about her, as well as worrying about disappointing us, her parents. I told her that at the end of the day no matter who she chose to love that as long as the person treated her great, and had great qualities that it didn’t matter what race nor sex we’d always love and support her choice. We absolutely love her girlfriend like she’d be a 3rd daughter. I assume people feel like they’ve gained another child when their kids marry a man. I feel this is no different. The thing that makes me so proud is they push each other to be a better person. To me that’s very important. Then I have my amazing 17 year old that is the most amazing, loving young you could ever hope for. Sorry for the book for anyone that takes the time to read it. I’m sure along the way, I’ve missed punctuations😂 mis spelled words, as well as many other errors😂💀🤦🏻‍♀️

A marvellous and inspiring woman. Didn't hear anything from Margot herself about her being a lesbian but it is important to point that out because so many LGBTQ people suffered at the hands of the Nazis and their story gets stifled by homophobic historians who are frightened to mention the "L" word lest it offends their "respectable" society. A great documentary.

I greatly appreciate her story. My only problem is using her to make it a queer story? That would be like saying "Holocaust amputee story" when someone becomes an amputee 50 years later. This was a clear push down an unrelated path to get views when her sexuality was 100% unrelated. The comment about "phobia" is utterly ludicrous.

With all due respect and total respect for Margot and their family - why is this testimony described as Queer but Margot does not say anything about how they identify or their experience as Queer or even if they identify this way but the film is entitled this. I feel it’s misleading and exploitative to engage a viewer and take them down another rabbit hole they might not be ready or capable of watching.

There are no queer or transgender women in her story. I have listened to dozens of holocaust survivor interviews. She and her best friend Dita were like sisters and every holocaust survivor says nobody would have survived without close friendships or sticking together in small groups, as they could then help and watch out for each other. You could not survive as a loner. She has 2 children and was very happily married. She and her friends were not homosexual.

Pretty sure celebrating that fact....as we are celebrating it this month, has everything to do with it. We celebrate how far we have come since these times.....

Gay people were targeted. Gay men were seen not as real men and thrown into the camps as well they had the pink triangle. Women were not demonized as much because they could be used for breeding. But this story didn't have anything to do with that and wasn't mentioned in a way that would reflect it.

@@theresevarney4715 Then why were they put in these very camps for their sexual orientation if it’s not so important?? I think the heterosexual world makes it out to be very important if one is not heterosexual and always has and still does, Uganda being an extreme example of what I’m saying.

I’m surprised the word”queer” was used in the title. With as hypersensitive as people are today I’m surprised they weren’t forced to change the title or have the post taken down

It’s an American terminology for gay & I find it very insulting (im not gay) so can’t imagine how insulting gay people feel with the word. In the U.K. we only used the word gay in the older days.

Please change the title to this video. It is in total disrespect to this woman and her family. This was hardly about anything "queer" -- , so it is irresponsible of SHOAH to present it this way.
