On "My Car Story" we're in Scottsdale AZ on 2-3-24.
We're looking at a 1962 Dodge Dart 440 4 Door in Buff Paint. The car comes with the 318 CI V8 engine and a push button automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Andy Welemin. Andy’s had this car since 2023. Andy shares when he saw the car he thought it had a face only a Father could love. So he purchased the car, and although the car has only been to one car show with him, seems lots of people remember one like this their family had, or they don’t know what it is and would like to know.
ENJOY!

My dad had a 1962 Dodge Dart 330 station wagon. It had a slant 6, and very few options. My dad wasn’t too meticulous about maintenance on his cars, and that wagon held up for over 80,000 miles of abuse with little to no problems. That big grille in the center of the dash for the radio speaker, the push button gear selector, the whole interior vibe brings back great memories. Thanks for this one gentleman. Joe

I HS mate had a 62 or 63' Dodge like this right out of HS in the early mid 70s. A 318 with a 3 speed on the column, he converted it to a 4spd on the floor. For a 318 it ran pretty strong. I was impressed with it. He put Cragars on all 4 corners with fat tires on the rear.

Greetings from Australia! Thanks for making this clip Lou, I've always enjoyed your content, especially MOPAR!... I remember seeing this vehicle when it was for sale. Coincidentally, last year I bought EXACTLY the same car, Dart 440, Buff Paint (All original excellent condition paint), Push Button Auto, survivor with 57000 miles from Denver CO. My car had been parked up in 1974 (the year I was born!), with a hydrolocked engine, and untouched until last year. I had some rectifications works done locally in Denver, before bringing the car to Australia, to finish off the mechanical restoration here. I restored all of the original mechanicals; however, built the engine as a Stroker, so now a 392CI... Would be great to post some pics of mine if anyone was interested!? Thanks again Lou, and keep up the awesome work!

Sad story here but my grandpa ran a wrecking yard from the 1940s until the 1980s and he crushed alot of these late 1950s to early 1970s mopars because alot of them were bad about leaking water around the trunklids. If I'm not mistaken, all those odd designs at Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler in the early '60's were Virgil Exner's "swan song". I don't know if they look better with age but we do come to recognize them as styling exercises instead of competition for the '62 Chevy or Ford like when they were new.

Well, I really don't know if this 1962 Dodge Dart 440 looks bad with that Buff paint; It just depends on the eyes with which you look at it. Its extravagant design catches my attention, with those headlights inserted into the same large grille on the front and two on its sides, the large lines that stand out with chrome finishes from the sides of the front and rear fenders, ending at the back with those turbine-style guides, placed in an unconventional position and adorned with chrome lines (special mention for the curved, bubble-style rear window). Nice interior, with those large and comfortable seats, along with the instrument panel with that line of dials below the speedometer and its attractive steering wheel with two chrome partitions. The brochures and catalogs in the trunk are interesting; since it could be seen that there was even a Station Wagon version available. Nice walk at the end; giving the feeling of going back in time, while demonstrating the smooth behavior of the vehicle. Congratulations to Mr. Welemin, for giving this baby a special space in his heart! Best regards, Lou!

A co-worker has his Grandfather's 1962 Dodge Dart Polara 500 Convertible same color with a medium Blue trim, and matching vinyl buckets in Buff and Blue. The top matches the body color and the car is all original with 36,000 original miles. I think he told me it had a 361 cubic-inch V-8. It is so ugly it is pretty. It has factory air conditioning, power windows, and real wire wheels. I rode with him to Santa Clarita last week and the car got so much attention considering its' odd looks. It really rode nicely, and he told me it drives better than his 2022 Tahoe.

My first car was the 62 Dodge dart 318 with the push button automatic had the little two barrel on it, but that car ran pretty good. You weren’t gonna set no world records with it, but it was reliable and it’s a good driving car handled very nice and the steering was so effortless. I mean, you could be moving 2 mile an hour grab the steering wheel and flick it to the right or left, and it would go all the way it hit the lock anyway I like that car tell another thing back up lights on it when you put that thing on reverse and nighttime, you could see anything you needed to see all right this is six in a row Jim kennerdell Pennsylvania

As oddball was the styling, the 1961 Dodge had the even more quirky reversed tailfins. I count the later model as an improvement. The styling had a lot in common with the 1960 Valiant.

In 1966 my best friends mother bought a black twin to this car. Why ? The salesman said it was so ugly no one would buy it but it would run great and last a very long time. We were 16 and would take it to the drag strip on Saturday nights. We surprised a lot of people that V8 was great!

The car has allot of sculptured sheet metal all around giving this car a unique sophisticated sort of elegant look to it. It looks reminiscent of the mid 50's DeSoto with more pronounced sculptured sheet metal, that took a definite paradigm shift in illumination placement of exterior lighting. I think this car would've been more popular had it leaned more into the luxury Chrysler category. Dress it up a bit more with luxury options and I think it would've been a stately hit.

Wow! A great example of one of the ugliest Chrysler products ever made. I don't know what they were thinking when this was designed. Ghastly is probably understating my feelings. It is so rare that something this homely would survive. One could say like a modern Honduh and Toyoduh, these vehicles are better looking when crushed. With that said, it is so homely that in today's world, it looks almost normal (especially when put on the two brands named above sales lots). Virgil Exner had a weird sense of style for sure, but his cars looked like nothing else. Nice survivor! One could say this is like the last Dodo bird. Thanks for sharing this automotive oddity, Lou!

While the '62 may have been the homliest year model, the 62-65 B-bdies were all great riding cars. Not as unwieldy like the full size cars, but not as choppy & uncomfortable as the compact(A-bodies).

Elwood Engel had taken over from Ford in '62. His first design was the '64 Imperial then the '65 Coronet. He is attributed to Chrysler's golden era which was from 1964 to 1974 for car designs.
