Welcome the the Survivor All-Time Top 40 Rankings podcast. Rob Has a Podcast reached out to thousands of dedicated Survivor fans on the ultimate quest to compile the definitive ranking of Survivor seasons. Each week, Rob Cesternino will be joined by a panel of guests to countdown the top 40 chart. Along the way, we’ll take a look back at each season and highlight some of the standout moments, players, and moves.
This week we’re discussing antiquing, advantage-geddon, and Debbie’s iconic tiger bathing suite as we dive into Survivor: Game Changers, the 31st best season of Survivor. Head to exile with a panel of experts to to discuss the good and bad of this season (and no, it’s not John Cochran waiting aboard a pirate ship). I didnt hate this season as much as everyone else. The editing was really poor and the advantagegeddon was stupid but I really like Sarahs journey and the hardcore game play!

I agree with you. I like this season because of Sara. Too bad they didnt do a great edit for her during the season, but she really mastered the final tribal council showing all her cards, and she showed her reasoning for being a 'villain' during the reunion.

It was a terrible cast for what it was trying to be. There were too many people that just really didn't belong. Caleb, Hali, Cierra, Sierra, Debby, Varner, Zeke, Michaela, Brad, Troyzan and Sarah just didn't do enough their first season to make it feel they belonged on a season named Game Changers! That's over half the cast!

This is why the ‘Most Underrated’ question doesn’t work. You can’t ask a huge group of people that or else that person becomes immediately not underrated. Victoria’s not underrated. Chrissy’s not underrated. Cirie’s DEFINITELY not underrated.

I think the survivor players who make it super far in each season should be exempt from the question too. The longer a person is on the show the more the audience gets to know them and root for or against them.

Messy season. I hated swapageddon more than advantagegeddon. Sarah was great to watch and ignoring the one extra pre-merge swap and the edit mistakes, I loved this season. too low and Lacina's game is underrated and lost in the edit.

Sarah’s game is the redeeming factor of Game Changers where I am concerned. Aside from premerge Sandra shenanigans and Michaela.

I think a champions vs contenders - ish name would’ve been so much better for the cast! There’s even 10 people that could pretty easily be labeled legend status, and 10 sort of dark horse/second chancey people as well (going into the season of course). They’re even gender balanced! @@veira9 Yeah I was unsure of the two of them, because Varner goes all the way back to season 2 and had an iconic vote out, as well as being a memorable premerge boot in cambodia, but never made jury. tai made jury and was a favorite on KR, but sucked at the game and ended up being a 0 vote finalist. they can go either way for me

I loved this season. Game Changers was great. I think the problem people had with this season was that several players don't fit the category of "Game Changers."

Rob brought in two queens to talk about a season dominated by queens and i’m here for it (yes brad was also there but who really cares) I actually really like Game Changers, and rated it pretty highly. I loved Sarah this season, and really liked how this season gave smaller characters a chance to shine with the big ones. Sierra, Brad, and Sarah became big characters fighting with and against legends like Cirie and Andrea and I liked that dynamic. The editing wasn’t amazing and having someone in the final 3 be as purple as troyzan is baffling, but I put it in my top half.

I think Sara's Legacy Advantage should also be weighted more than a regular idol, because it took social maneuvering and strategic elimination to obtain

I had this season ranked #27. First of all, the cast did not fit the theme "Game Changers". Hali, Sierra, Brad, and Troyzan as game changers? This literally was the leftovers of the second chance vote along with some well known veterans. The gameplay in this season was quite interesting at times, but I feel like a lot of it gets taken out by the fact that they had a billion advantages in the game. This was the season that started the theme of "Too many advantages" in Survivor. Cirie going out the final 6 without any votes, despite that being a first, just left a sour taste in my mouth. In my opinion, the legacy advantage should not be a thing after that. It's basically a get out of jail free card at the final 6. I thought Sarah was a solid winner in this season, but she made some errors that were somewhat obvious late in the game where if Brad isn't so stuck on going against Tai that he would get her out instead. I also could not stand Debbie after this season because her self-righteousness, and the incident with Jeff and Zeke was something that also holds this season back. If this season had a better title to fit the cast, I would've been happier, but I just didn't like what this season ended up doing for modern Survivor where it's literally get an advantage and you can go far and win the game. This season had potential, but was more of a disappointment for me.

@@PackerSmacker4 I didn't rank it lower just because of the title. That just meant I was not quite as optimistic as I was when the season was announced. Second of all, I don't think Troy played well, he was in a goat role following Brad wherever he went late in the game, and Brad is only good if he's in charge, otherwise he has to rely on challenges, which isn't a very good player in my opinion. Sierra earned my respect, but other players like Hali and Caleb, who were major flops is where I saw some issue. I can agree Cambodia is where Survivor started to become too advantage heavy, but up until this season, those advantages were played around. This season had players depend on them to do well, which is where I feel like the too many advantages started to become a lot more evident in the game. Cirie is also not given as good of an edit just because she didn't win, if she and Sarah's finishing spots were flipped around, so would the edits. She probably wouldn't have won, but it upsets me that she was basically put at an unfair disadvantage at the final 6. Nobody should be voted out with no votes cast against them in the entire season ever. Plus, all those idols just made everything super predictable at the end, which is something that brought down this season for me.

@@PackerSmacker4 I can see you like this season probably a lot better than the general fanbase, and I can definitely name a few seasons that haven't showed up yet that should be below GC. The seasons I have ranked 20-28 are all super close, so I think if there's just like one or two things a little better for this season, it ranks a lot higher for me. And I can agree that Cirie probably wouldn't have been in the final 3 along with the fact that most end games are predictable, but this season had potential for some big moves down the stretch, and all that got taken out by the amount of advantages that were left. That's just how the season played out and we can't change that. Plus, I do think there are some players that haven't reached their potential in this game, Hali is definitely one where she just needs the right group of people for her to work with, and I think she could do quite well.

do I have to be the grumpa lump in this comment section that agrees with this placing, or even that it should have been lower? I think the downside of having returnee seasons is that we lose a lot of the spontaneity of just watching strangers interact and get to know each other amidst the high stakes of the game and it's strategy. There were numerous episodes that focused on the players sitting around doing nothing except talking about what it's like to be on Survivor. Idols were everywhere. Varner/Zeke. Racial comments towards Michaela. The winner was edited poorly. The theme was atrocious they could have made it so much better by just changing the name. Great players individually does not make for a great cast as a whole. I don't expect many to agree with this perspective I just wanted to vent. I hated this season

Does "non-transferable" still mean that Cirie could've just kept it without playing it? She could've just said, you gave it to me to hold onto this, but I'm not giving it back even if I can't play it myself. She should've thrown it in the fire like Dr. Mike did the next season since she couldn't play it XD

Rob, thank you for your comments and acknowledgments ( 1:33:00 ) that Michaela's experiences this go around had very racially charged microaggressive actions that made for her to be an easy target. How do they expect to get another black winner when there are few black people around to support each other? I am so excited for what's to come!

So I did not know about the Varner incident going into this show and once I realized what was happening I turned it off. My heart just dropped into my stomach and I burst into tears. Eventually I turned it back on and just fast forward a bit to when they just vote him out. The only possible positive outcome I could see from this is someone learns why this is so horrifically wrong to do.

@@christiangal2124 True, sorry misread you that you wouldn't like it. Lately I was listening to KIA and Stephen was not fond of this idea. For me WaW is Top7 with Cagayan, Pearl Islands, HvV, China, Tocantins and Phillipins. Without order, just top tier. Just below it Vanuatu, Guatemala and Panama. But I also enjoyed Thailand. There was good interview of Brian on Fairplays podcast. Brian would be good addition to WaW although cast of WaW was awesome. Game would be so much different if Brian and Mike were there and Adam and Ben (or Nick) were not. I remember that midseason of WaW I commented "I would like for Tony to win, but small chances with his Fabio-esque goofball edit."

Cool to hear from someone who knows Michaela outside of Survivor but I 100% think the way some of the other Survivors felt about her was justified. I got the same feeling from MvGX, she's cocky and super sassy. When she's losing she's pouty and super mean to people she thinks she's smarter than. Her extreme competitiveness and strong personality were her downfall.

Can't believe Caramoan lasted this long. The Fans were so blah. The merged tribe was also very underwhelming. There wasn't any particularly exciting in the season. Half of the Favorites were also almost questionable on why they're there.
