I revisit a fountain pen I first reviewed on January 3, 2018. The Aurora 88 is a fun pen and this one has a flex nib!

It's not so much the flex but the wetness of this pen that I enjoy. What a pity about the cap, especially on such a high-end pen. I understand your dilemma about having it replaced and losing the limited edition number. I think I would have a conversation with a registered Aurora dealership first or indeed contact Aurora direct. At least that should reveal your options. 🔴Edit : just had another thought...Grandmia Pens can do repairs but it means sending the cap to England.

That's a good thought. Maybe I'll reach out to him. I trust him to do a good job with any pen.

It’s not the first time I’ve said this, but the modern Aurora 88 is my favorite and the best fountain pen on the planet. I have the yellow version of this pen. I love everything about this pen. All aspects of its style and aesthetics, the perfect feel in hand, the terrific nib, the best, smoothest piston mechanism I’ve seen yet in a pen. The reserve filling feature is very useful because it usually helps write almost a whole A4 page with the reserve ink. Easy to clean out with the nib unit screwing out. I only wish the pen was just a little bit heavier. The price is high. But I’d take an Aurora at this price or more, every time, over very similarly priced modern, premium Montblanc and Pelikan pens. And oh, this fine-flex nib is a truly wonderful writer. A true semi-flex, at best. But unlike some other flex nibs, the Aurora’s nib is just perfect as a daily writer without flexing. This pen will win every rodeo, on my card, against any other pen you care to contest it with.

Wait until you see the used Aurora Optima I picked up! It's a Sole with a 14K nib. I haven't decided if the nib unit unscrews, and I don't know if I dare try too hard. It dates from the 1990s. I had never tested intentionally how much of a page the reserve ink gives in my 88s. Good to know. It reminds me a bit of the little switch on my Geha pens which allows access to a reserve tank. And you describe this nib well. It's no flex nib, but it's fun, and it provides some good daily writing too.

@@WaskiSquirrel ..Did you buy the Optima Sole from Protopens? I remember they had one listed on their site for what seemed like forever. I have one gorgeous red auroloide Optima (75th Anniversary SE release) from 1994. The nib screws out, as usual. I’m quite sure all the releases of the ‘90s do so likewise. Of course, I cannot be sure about yours. Does it have the longer tined nib, though? Depending on the size point of the nib, and maybe paper (and ink) too, the reserve ink allows a minimum of half an A4 page of writing - and often even more than that. Btw, I’ve found the vintage 88 to do the same. Whenever I run out of ink, I screw the piston down and I get more than one A4 page of writing with the last ink available. The fine-flex nib is a great one. That’s why I have it on two of my Auroras, an 88 and an Optima.

Mine's a survivor, too (in black). I have the vintage variant as well and absolutely love the nib on that one but that barrel sadly has a slight crack with some ink leakage so.... Yeah, Auroras are pricey but like some other commenters, I find it's worth it. I only have two modern gold nib Auroras (88 and Optima) along with a steel nib Ipsilon. Auroras always tempt me if/when budget allows!

Another less pricey but equally excellent Aurora you might consider buying sometime is the Talentum. It has the very same 14k gold nib as the 88/Optima do, but doesn’t come in as many glamorous color finishes and is a C-C filler. But it’s a great, cheaper alternative to the 88 and Optima. I have two Talentums, with the M and Italic nibs. Aurora’s factory italic is the very best italic nib I’ve ever used. The Ipsilon is one of my favorites. You may consider the Style, as well. Has the same nib as the Ipsilon. Aurora’s steel nibs are also my favorite steel nibs in the market today.

Thanks! How embarrassing! I forgot my Talentum (with a stub nib). Time to put it back into rotation.@@sajjadhusain4146

I'm quite pleased with the Aurora pens I own, vintage or modern, steel nibs or gold. My selection is limited, of course. I would like some more, both modern and vintage. Budget limits me as well.

Howdy Mr. WaskiSquirrel! Thanks for another video and sharing this beautiful pen with us. For what it's worth, I have a friend who had an issue with her Aurora pen and when she tried to contact customer service they were basically beyond useless. She had quite an ordeal with their customer service and could barely get them to help her at all. This is just my anecdotal experience, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Hope you're doing well and having a great week!

Your friend's experience is exactly what I'm afraid of. I've heard a few horror stories.

I am convinced that there should be more orange,green and purple pens in this world. That looks like a very nice nib. You could ask Doodlebud what he would do or recommend you do.

I agree with you. I love this intense color. And I do still need an intense purple!

The flex on this pen is really nice for a relatively modern pen.

Not the best of any modern pen, but certainly quite good!

Stipula’s in-house made gold ‘Stiflex’ nibs are worth checking out for a lovely, modern, soft, flex-y experience. Not vintage flex, by any means. But very good for today. Ditto the 14k (and to a lesser extent, the 18k) gold nibs on Scribo pens.

Nice to see this pen again it is a beauty. Hmm, I don’t have an orange pen yet, I guess I should start looking lol. That nib is great, probably the right amount of flex for my very occasional flex moments. As for the cap crack, recommend doing nothing about it but thinking -do no further harm. Only other suggestion I have is this: assuming you can get to the inside of the cap in the area where the crack is you could seal and stabilize the crack to hopefully prevent it from going further. You would use a very thin plastic model cement. A tricky task but it can be done. To lengthy to go into here. If you are interested in pursuing this further shoot me an Email and we can go from there.
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel Год назад
I'm leaning toward leaving the crack alone for now. It's disappointing, but doesn't seem to be growing or hindering the function of the pen.

suspect I’m going to get an Aurora 88 at some point: aesthetically they really appeal to me, just a bit worried it won’t write fine enough for my tastes:)
@sajjadhusain4146
@sajjadhusain4146 Год назад
Aurora’s F nib writes a true (Western) fine line width with perfect flow and consistency. Some people say it would be more like a Japanese fine. There’s also the EF nib, of course, if you prefer even a finer line than that. The fine-flex nib is a fine, but wetter than usual than the standard F nib. I think you have nothing to fear. Get an Aurora 88 whenever you’re ready.
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel Год назад
I'll bow to @sajjadhusain4146 in experience with this pen. I've only owned two, and neither was a fine. But my experience with my broad, a medium that has not yet been shown, and a steel Aurora nib is that they tend to run thinner than the typical European nib.
@sajjadhusain4146
@sajjadhusain4146 Год назад
@@WaskiSquirrel ..I’d say Aurora’s gold nibs (and I have ALL of them) write really mostly on par with Western nib size points in terms of line-width - barring Montblanc and Pelikan nibs. And, of course, the occasional anomalies that occur within Aurora’s pen nibs when so they put out so many pen models, year on year.
