Susan Bernofsky: Magical Writing - Robert Walser's Microscripts
Thursday, December 7, 2017
Robert Walser translator, editor, and biographer Susan Bernofsky invites you to look behind the scenes of Walser’s mysterious microscript writing and will discuss Walser’s role in the Berlin arts scene in the first decade of the twentieth century.
SUSAN BERNOFSKY's literary translations include eight works of fiction by the great Swiss-German modernist author Robert Walser, as well as novels and poetry by Franz Kafka, Hermann Hesse, Jenny Erpenbeck, Yoko Tawada, Uljana Wolf, and others. She directs the program in literary translation in the Columbia School of the Arts MFA Writing Program and is co-editor (with Esther Allen) of the 2013 Columbia University Press anthology In Translation: Translators on Their Work and What It Means. A 2014 Guggenheim Fellow, she received the 2015 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the Ungar Award for Literary Translation, the Schlegel-Tieck Prize, and the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize for her translation of The End of Days by Jenny Erpenbeck, and the 2017 Warwick Prize for Women in Translation for her translation of Memoirs of a Polar Bear by Yoko Tawada. She blogs about translation at Translationista and is currently writing a biography of Robert Walser.

QUIJOTE TALKS take place in our library on 21st Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues in Chelsea, usually on Thursdays at 6:30 pm. Named after our favorite after-lecture hangout, El Quijote in the Chelsea Hotel, and inspired by the knight errant himself, this new series consists of pointed talks and discussions about relevant pasts and possible futures.

Can anyone help me locate a poem of Robert Walser's? It's about a spider who builds a web, but then the web gets knocked down and he has to rebuild it, but the second time around the spider does not build it as perfectly because he's afraid it will get knocked down again. I read it in a library a long time ago and thought it was beautiful, but don't know the book or poem title. Thank you!
