1:34:23 - Prince - “The Cross”
Susan Rogers dropped out of high school in Southern California to teach herself how to be a sound engineer and technician. By 25, she was working for Crosby, Stills and Nash at their Rudy Records studio. Later, in 1983, Rogers heard that Prince was looking for an engineer and went on to spend five years working for him in Minneapolis and L.A on albums like Purple Rain. The result was a working relationship that would change her life forever. Rogers went on to record, mix and/or produce artists such as the Jacksons, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne and the Barenaked Ladies. But nowadays she focuses on the academic side of things. She holds a doctorate in psychology from McGill University and is now Associate Professor and director of the Berklee Music Perception and Cognition Laboratory. Her research focuses on auditory memory, psychoacoustics and the perception of musical signals.
The Red Bull Music Academy is a global music institution committed to fostering creativity in music. We celebrate music, its culture, and the transformative minds behind it. Begun in 1998, the Academy has taken the core principles that underlie its annual workshop for selected participants and applied this curatorial approach to events, lectures, and city-wide festivals throughout the year.

Susan needs to be given the keys to the Vault and given free reign to get Prince's music out to the world with integrity, aligned with the value system she refers to in this interview. Only she can do this. Let it happen Tyka!!! 3>

This interview was EPIC. Dr. Rogers really helped to me to understand why there may be so much material in "The Vault" at Paisley Park. Prince had so many ideas and he executed them as they were conceived. I thought that it was an ego thing, that I could never understand. The interview also helped me to understand Prince's ethos for producing and creating music. It is always nice to learn more about the STORY BEHIND THE STORY. I found her insight and love of "soulful" music very refreshing. Music is the universal equalizer, after all, right?!. I also was glad to hear about her work on human hearing. Fascinating.

I heard something that I never heard before in the song "Around the World In A Day". After she introduced the song I listened to it before continuing with this video. She talked about the song's importance related to a new awakening musically for Prince. Upon playing the song for the thousandth time (no exaggeration) I realized that his initial wail in the beginning may have purposely been there to represent (a baby's cry) the rebirth of a new Prince. A very enjoyable two plus hours of listening. Thank you Dr. Susan Rogers. I also realized I've lived on Prince Street since the age of 9 upon hearing Controversy. Thank you for everything

In an interview, Prince said that someone would release all that music of his hidden down in his vault, though he didn't know who. One of Susan's all time favorite songs, that Prince would not release, was "Moonbeam Levels". How ironic that just a few months after his death, this gift to Susan, is now assessible to all and appears on the just released 4Ever album.

I can't thank you enough for uploading this. This is a keeper. The insight into how Prince worked and lived is priceless to me. "The street where you live." I only wish the music hadn't been edited out, I presume for copyright reasons. And when she said toward the beginning that she loved all of the songs, except one, why on earth did he not ask her what song was that she didn't like?

1:29:00min - talking about his unreleased music - YES please Susan, I completely agree with you. At the end, even he kept those songs in his vault as at that time he thought, they are not good enough or they do not have much to say to the audience .... but that was that time. NOW the audience is hunger for it, WE WANT it, we want to see his process of working, thinking and what he was feeling like - as it will be all there in that vault, in his unreleased songs, music.

I know I commented on this a lot. But, after watching the young Prince footage discovered in news archives. It compelled me to go back and listen to people who worked with him. Dr. Susan Rogers exemplified the best way to think about being an artist. I could imagine how she conjured up these beliefs after working with such a legendary icon. The part where she talks about ask yourself what success means for you? Important seminar I would recommend for anyone interested in taking their shot at the industry in various facets. It's the most logical way to view it all with common sense.
