February 27, 2012 | 4:36 Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, & Warren Haynes perform "I'd Rather Go Blind" at In Performance at the White House: Red, White, and Blues accompanied by the White House band featuring Booker T.
I've watched this 50+ times and every time the hairs on my arms stand up during Derek Trucks solo. This is what music is about. What a performance from everyone. The performance and the audience there with every note.
@@Kenroadrunner That’s also one of my favorite duets with Beth and Joe, along with ‘I’ll Take Care of You’. Just awesome, as is this! As for them playing in the White House for the Obama’s - well, that’s another story I won’t even touch (I’m sure you can guess my thoughts on this subject)?!
@@paulmorris8762 Thank you. This was a good version but I've heard good versions all over the place. Beth Hart is definitely the leader of this category.
LOL. Nah. It was more like a sign for Derek not to make turn around and prepare to get back into the song, 3:21 "Look at me, damn it, so I can give this sign to you. Here, look, I'm taking the microphone, still facing at you. We're getting back to the song! " then a head small twitch "Get back there, now... *I would rather*...!!*"
For this generation, you may never ever hear this song sang any greater than what you will hear here. This little lady can sing brother. She is the real deal. No hit and miss here. Boy what talent.
Mike Rodgers sorry dude....it’s not about ranking the greats. Even Derek cites Warren as an influence. Try to enjoy the music without the petty comparisons. Peace.
+Bob Cardenaz Yeah buddy..ol' Rod does some of the best arrangements and productions going...and his VOICE really rises to the occasion. I really like his cover of "This ol' heart" w/Ron Isley belting it out too!! WOW... so many GREAT choices.. :-)
I think she possesses a sound that many, many women in rock can only hope to achieve. I believe there are songs that are written with a voice like hers in mind. I'm not even a fan of that kind of music but I really do like her.
MrMarkpark The Blues is a celebration of hard times , If you never had a rough time in life , you simply cannot sing with that pain in your voice ...Thhis is a fact . You gotta feel it from your heart & soul
MrMarkpark and the more you hear her, the better you like her. Derick Trucks and Warren Hays are Blues Icons but Susan has something very special, I do not know what is is but, Etta had it Elmore had it as well. If you can hear Elmore James with out tapping your feet, call the coroner, cause your dead.
Etta was the great originator of this song. Didn't think anyone could sing it better than Beth Hart, until I saw this. Susan T kills it on the very same level as Beth Hart! Love Warren and Derek too! This is a five star performance hands down.
Had not seen the Beth Hart version (w. Joe Bonamassa) until I saw it referenced in some comments here. Beth and Joe definitely left it all out on the floor, but to me Beth is more Joplin than Etta, and my personal preference stays with Susan.
@@janflewelling6277 I also never thought I’d hear a great performance of this song other than the one that Beth Hart did with Joe Bonamassa, until I heard this one! But, as a comparison of Susan’s voice with that of Janis Joplin, I think Joss Stone is more similar to Janis’s, esp with her rendition of a ‘Piece of My Heart’, live in Suica concert! Joss really nails it in this one - and I personally like it better than the one by Janis! However, back to this one - ❤ it with them together, and Susan’s voice shines ✨!
This is my #1 all-time blues performance. Trucks’s AM radio-like bottleneck blues tone, Tedeschi’s vocals, and Haynes’s tasty little fills just make this thing ethereal. It gives me chills every time I listen, and I’ve watched this video dozens of times. “I was just… I was just… I was just sittin’ here thinkin’…” hits me in the feels like nothing else. I’d give my left arm to see these three in concert in a small venue like that.
First of all, I am so proud of a President of the United States that would offer his home for an in home concert by 3 of the greatest current blues players in the country and you knew he was digging it. I can never get enough of these three together. They play off of each other so well.
Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks were one in heaven, and when they came to earth they came a little undone. But if you saw it from the stars, you'd see no space between them.
This gives me cold chills!!! I have played this so many times. Susan & Warren, are so good and DEREK TRUCKS takes this song places it's never been. I wish everyone could hear this.
This is the best live performance available on YT imo. I’ve made my wife cry too before when I let the soul flag fly high (Otis Redding-These Arms Of Mine) but Derek takes it to a higher level not attainable by us mere mortals. And Warren’s opening notes in F Maj just slay me. Politics has no business here. The White House just happened to be the venue that night...
This really is a tight blues statement from peeps who love each other. The nods of the head. They know they nailed it, and they nailed it because this is where they live..in the music. 3 greats.
I am a Republican, in theory anyway, but this has to be the best president (musically) we ever had! Great taste in music! So glad to see such talent given their due! Kudos to you, President & Mrs. Obama!
He has good taste in music. Americans just as a point make great music it is the only time we are every deeply in love with our neighbor is when we sing.
JJJZANESVILLE2 sje os a hreat singer and one. helluva musicin ferek is also agtrat slid gutarist takrs after jis fad who. eas in the abb band he was yhe dtummer also swesome
I agree Britt. Music is the ONLY universal language of LOVE. If more people lived with the passion to appreciate that fact, it would seem the world wouldn't seem as mean and cruel as it to often does.
RIP Christine P McVie, who did a beautiful version of this song in the late 60's. That brought me to this sweet version. Thanks to the great Etta James for making it worthy to be sang forever !
Every time I watch this, it never fails to make my heart skip a beat. So good, on so many different levels it’s hard to put into words. It is just exceptional.
Damn they all sound incredibly good together. I love Susan's vocals- puts me in mind of older Bonnie Raitt. Consummate American blues musicians right there on stage.
I drove 16 + hours round trip to see TTB in Richmond VA 3/14/ 24 I drove to the concert and back ❤ wish Warren was a special guest but best concert I needed for my soul❤.
What a great performance for the President and First Lady by such talented and authentic artists in the White House. Susan's voice is perfect for this song. Blew everybody away. Go Susan Tedeschi!
Something I always come back to with this is how Derek’s solo feels so integral to the song, it’s not a solo they threw in just because. And it’s because Derek doesn’t just play the guitar in the solo - he makes it sing
I had never heard of Warren Haynes until just now. If I could sing like that, I would die happy. Wow! Of course Susan (I discovered her yesterday) is excellent.
Wow! What power-house front line on this great tune! Heart-wrenching vocals and killer solos from both Trucks and Haynes. I love these folks more every time I hear them. The backing musicians are right on the money also. p.s. It's nice to have a Prez that appreciates and supports this music!
Wow. Just wow. Warren sings, and it's pretty good. Susan takes over and blows my mind. Then Derek lets loose an amazing-as-always soul-o. So many fantastic covers of this song, but this one is my favourite... so far.
Absolute perfection! To play at that level in that house really takes some beating. I watch this video at least 4 times a week and have done since I found it last year. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
How lil squeaky voice Susan can get that dirty sound out of her voice always gets to me. A nicer couple you will never meet. Susan and Derek... Great job!
+Vernon Allen I ran into them at a trader joes in emeryville ca the day of the show at the greek theater in berkeley , of course i was going , we hung out talked , and I told susan if you play angel from montgomery(my fav) they're going to have to peel me off the floor..she played it and dedicated it me !!!...6/6/2016 it's on you tube , but not the dedication...they are totally awesome and the best R&B band out there!!
This performance is as great as it could ever be. Phenomenal vocals and Derek spreading his goodness over everyone. Still captivates me every time. Award winning on levels of epic proportions.
Hacia mucho timpo que no escuchaba musica que llegara al fondo de mi alma......porque no habia escuchado jamas a Susan , Derek y Warren.......maravilloso!
