Going here regularly since 2012, this song is truly timeless. Its hauntingly, impossibly, bitterly beautiful... I really want RU-vid algorithm to pick up this song and recommend it to people.
Wow, I was in Norway during the last week of July, in Stavanger, and one evening this song was played. I froze, it embraced me with all of its beauty. It felt celestial. I turned on my camera on the spot and started recording. It's been more than three months now and I've finally found it!!!
I've been going through every single Susanne S. song I can find online. I keep hoping to find a song that's not fucking amazing, but every new song I find destroys me completely. Brings me to tears & leaves me shaken and mind boggled. Susanne, you are beyond words. Beyond description, no matter which language I use. Thank you for your music
I was literally thinking the same thing. This song is absolutely devastating, in the best way possible. It ravages my body and leaves me bare. You know you have found true lyrical/musical talent when a song can affect you emotionally in such a way.
"The ones who are only living are the ones who are only dying". This song has helped a lot through the immediate aftermath of my brother's death. Thank you, Susanne for creating such beautiful songs that comforts aching hearts. So many times have I felt that God has left us anyway..
Absolute brilliance. My favourite Susanne song, a prize which takes some winning! As one of the greatest artists of this time, how is this lady not known more widely? I wouldn't suggest for one moment that her music is a well-kept secret, but she's hardly a household name either (beyond the fjords). I propose a Susanne Awareness Day in which every devotee is obliged to tell at least one other person about these beautiful songs.
Elsker denne sangen.
I accidentally heard this on the morning news today. It's possible the most beautiful song I've heard so far in my life. Susanne you are truly a singing angel... Keep it up.
Why on earth isn't this woman a superstar? This is so unbelievably beautiful... I'm so glad I found her (thank you internet), but it makes me wonder how many other talented people are out there that deserve far more recognition.
well that would be a disaster. im from norway and people dont deserve to get this handed to them. you should find her trough listening to years of music. i personly only listen to norwegian black metal and if everyone started listening to it i would quit. susanne is the only artist i listen to besides TNBM.
4:37 _God has left us anyway_ 5:33 _There are echoes in the garden_ _Is anybody listening?_ _There are echoes lost in the garden_ _Is anybody listening?_ New favorite song. Forever.
She is leaving me, she still loves me, but she does not know how to deal with "us", this is a song she has shared with me as she leaves me. Why is it that some of the most beautiful songs come to us from moments of such utter unbeauty and destruction? L.. I still love you, take your break, I know you will never read this, at least the cosmos will.
i felt your pain, buddy! we all did at some point. i know it sounds very cliché, but it will get better. and you will feel happiness again, at some point. just suround yourself with friends, and do things you used to like.
Long story short: Studied 3 months on Cuba, got super close to one of my classmates, she went back to her ex. The day after I realized that, she played this song for me. one week after she sung Black Widow for me. Feels like shit for a long while, but it get's better. Just do what John said, it helps.
Oh. Yes, 3 years ago, THIS was the man I fell in love with. But dear Cosmos, thank you for the lesson. Maybe the most complex lesson I had ever learn. The timing of listening this song again and stumbling across this comment, I admit, makes me smile.
Susanne is a true gift to the humanity. It's so sad she doesn't understand it. There's a lot of really great, skillful artists with immense talent, but she's way beyond any comparisons, and it's all because of her incredible soul.
What makes you say she doesn't understand it? She refused Norway's highest musical award (Spelemannsprisen) since it was for females only. She wanted it to be for all artists, and that's what it is today. She's one of Norway's most famous artists, and also famous around the world with her cooperation with M83 on the soundtrack for the movie 'Oblivion'. Check that out, btw, it's so good :) Especially the live version on the Jimmy Kinnel show. And also famous everywhere from her cooperations with Røyksopp, ofc.
@@Psilio because she told in interview after MFPIT release that only now she understands she's as good as other people are. I disagree - she's way above most of us.
@@TheMortalBeast Thank you. I didn't see that. I can't believe she thought she was not good before. She's so much better than any other artist i know. Funny how the human brain can trick us... :o Anyway, she's changed the awards for Norway, and my life :)
This song is magnificent! The line that resonated with me the most was "To know nothing and to know it all, to be both the animal and the God." The music is captivating and eerie and spoke a thousand words itself. Truly a masterpiece and a work of it's time.
+Leo Dobrodenka That line stood out to me as well. As a writer myself, I can only imagine the thoughts behind writing this and the tremendous amount of soul that went into it.
+Ash Towers Yes she is incredible , she told in an interview when she made the albums The Brothel and The Silicone Veil she was sad , that's why both albums are filled with soul, emotions and dark lyrics, both are so beautiful !
This song is absolutely gorgeous. From her voice to the poetry of the lyrics. My favorite lines are "The stars were stains, and heaven and afterglow". What a prolific thing to say, to describe the stars as stains rather than beautiful and gleaming like they most often are depicted in poetry. I also love the line "On every corner a gladiator is begging for another century". Another powerful lyric, comparing a prostitute who is past her prime to a gladiator who is begging for another era to bask in the glory of his conquests. Also the line; "I'll do whatever you want, I'll do whatever you say, God has left me anyway". This brought me to tears. What a profound statement of hopelessness and dispair. Gorgeous lyrics, such beautiful artistry. Lastly, I love the ending: a glimmer of hope sung amidst the depths of dispair which leaves us with an interesting philosophical statement: "The ones who are only living, are the ones who are only dying". This makes me think of the quote "the unexamined life is not worth living". I believe that Susanne is saying here that if you are not truly living your life to its fullest potential, then you are merely dying; refusing to examine the beauty of life. But anyway, this song really cuts deep into my soul and I truly think it is an underrated song.
She's actually saying Stars were stains in the heaven and afterglow, I'm almost 100% certain / sure of it. I know this comment is late, so, sorry for that
For some reason i've never seen this response before, even though it's 2 years old. But I really liked your reply, and I heartily agree. This song moves me to tears every time I hear it.
Ich liebe dieses lied, diese frau und ich vergöttere diese Stimme!!! Sie berührt mich einfach immer wieder und jedes mal auf neue bekomme ich eine gänsehaut!!!!
Haven't listened to this song in almost two years because of the emotional attachment I have to it. It's making me feel at peace right now though. Hauntingly deep.
Purple pavements Crooked fingers knocking on windows without souls Bodies are swinging from rooftops and poles Howling through hollows Restless nights in one night cheap hotels Oh, I'm only drifting to always come back And I search for something Oh, whatever I don't really care Driving with their lights off they can be anywhere Rolling down their windows Open car with open mouths Golden teeth and golden cards You cover your eyes, you cover your mouth, you cover your ears Still you follow my trail I'll do it all, I'll do whatever you say, God has left me anyway Lava laiden pavements Stars with stains and the heaven and afterglow Beneath the ashes our echoes are buried alive They are howling through hollows Once we've shared their temple of halls Now our heads are hung up on walls We are ruins within ruins On every corner a gladiator is begging for another century When no one cut your tongue to know nothing and to know it all To be both the animal and god You cover your eyes, you cover your mouth, you cover your ears Still you follow our trail We'll do it all, we'll do whatever you say, God has left us anyway You cover your eyes, you cover your mouth, you cover your ears Still you follow our trail We'll do it all, we'll do whatever you say, God has left us anyway There are echoes in the garden is anybody listening There are echoes lost in the garden is anybody listening They whisper: The ones who are only living are the ones who are only dying
What an absolutely stunning piece of music! It's a shame that she doesn't get more recognition...hell somebody needs to put this song in a tv-show like asap.
I can't understand how anything can be so beautiful! Amazing to listen to such a magnificent voice, and such an original song!! Susanne Sundfør is by far one of the greatest
Fun fact: This song was recoded in the Vigeland mausoleum in Oslo which have about 14 years of reverberation. You can definitely hear it in the track:)
Whats amazing that I heard her live before she was "mainstream known", a simple concert. 200-300 people and I knew she was a rising star. This song was so good live.
Because it's not commercial music, and that's what makes it so charming. She doesn't need to be one of the most famous artist to exert her art, her passion. But she clearly deserves to have a reputation more important given the quality of her music. The Brothel is just amazing ... it makes me dreaming
Usually not in this type of music and I dont remember how I got here. But this certainly will be my opening tab for tommorow, I can listen to this a 1000 times. What a touching voice and beautifull harmony.
Var i Skottland og sto snowboard i helgen og eneste som var kjekt å komme tilbake til var denne sangen! Gleder meg til albumet er ute i mars, og håper også musikken havner på spotify!

Slapped Yak Yeah , she is incredible , all her song are out of this world. Just listen to her 3 albums The Brothel , The Silicone Veil and Ten Love Songs .... and enjoy ! Have a phenomenal day !
Beauty, beauty! It´s beautiful, so strong and sensitive. Her voice reminds me of Rickie Lee Jones but her songs are far far better. This girl will have the recognition she deserves.
Hi Susanne I’m from different country,Turkey. Even though I can’t speak and understand English well I’m here for your beautiful masterpieces. I’m trying to learn English now to understand your words by myself and sing along with you. Seni Seviyorum ❤️ Aurora Aksnes and You are my biggest inspirations. I hope you will both do collab in the future. It would be like a dream for me 💜
That is so cool. Sorry, I'm not Susanne Sundfør, but I was born in the same town as her, Haugesund in Norway :) I've been to Turkey many times, and I love your country, and that the people there are so friendly towards everyone :)
@@sudenurodabasi Turkey is a very popular holiday destination to norwegians. I can't wait to get another of your great massages called 'hammam' or something :) You guys know how to enjoy life and relax! :D
i feel i'm so alone, i feel i'm a something else then a human, this song is so magical! it get you in different world, a world without with only one human, and only you! not even animals!
en så bra sang har jeg ikke hørt på lenge! Jeg får lyst til å legge meg ned i gresset alene og gråte, men sammtidig sitte i et rom med venner og prate om livet
Just Beautiful. If it weren't for that ted bundy mini serious on Prime, And that song that played when it came on, (White Foxes) I would never knew who she was. (and will NEVER leave U)
