Hopefully this will help you form some ideas on what type of shelving you would like in your garage to help with organizing. It wasn’t until I all but finished that I thought this might be a good build to share. I was taking pictures along the way for myself. Sorry there are no instruction or steps to build the shelves. I am going to be building another set and try do a better job at documenting the steps. In my garage there is not a lot of space between the walls and the cars. So if I would have built them from floor to ceiling we would not be able to open our car doors easily. You can see in the one still frame picture of the attic that the all thread goes through a 2x4 that is suspended from truss to truss. Not sure the weight rating for the shelves but they should do for the storage items that I plan on putting up there. Thanks and leave a comment or suggestions for future projects. Enjoy!

Wish you would’ve actually filmed a shelf installed with your wire and bolts including in the attic but regardless it looks clean, well built and definitely not an eye sore

A bit frustrating that you show nailing of the shelf surface (which is really straight forward), but the supporting structure just magically exists. Did you build the structure in place, or on the floor and then lift? Sorry to be grousing about this, but you video didn't help me with my current challenge. Also, it look like you are using 1/2 inch threaded rod?

Hey, sorry I didn't capture video of the assembly. I did assemble it on the wall piece by piece. I dropped the 1/2" threaded rod down while assembling, allowing it to hold the 2X4's while assembling up in the air.

@@micjodan Thanks. I too built my structure in place. I used 3/8" threaded rod, but I placed them closer.

Go to the 00:56 - 01:00 section. There is a cross beam he made that sits on top of the rafters. The lighting is very weak so you will have to stop the video to see it.

Nice video! Can you explain how you created the lip for the plywood to sit on? Also will the threaded rod work on the roof rafters?
@micjodan

I used a router with a rabbit/dado bit. Around an 1” wide and 1/2” deep. You have to drill a hole through one of the roof trusses and use a washer and bolt to secure it.

considering the same type of build. any concern that one side is supported by the same 2 trusses for the length of the shelf? I would like to build one in the dead space above my garage door, but the trusses run parallel to the door and 2 trusses would bear the structure.
@micjodan

Hey, it really just depends on what you plan on storing on the shelf. I wouldn’t be too concerned if it is just common home storage items. Online says in general 10-12lbs per square foot. That’s per chord as well so if you distribute it over two trusses you will get close to 25lbs per square foot.

brilliant and economic overhead storage. Please tell me how the threaded rods got anchored to the ceiling?
@micjodan
@micjodan 5 лет назад
Thank you! I climbed into the attic and placed a 2x4 in an I-beam position spanning two trusses 0:59. Then the threaded rod extends through the 2x4 and installed a nut and washer.

Loren Perry 1/2” is what I used. You don’t want to relieve to much wood from the 2x4 because it will not provide as much strength. Depending on what you are storing on the shelves you may be able to go with a smaller all thread.

@micjodan
@micjodan 3 года назад
Maybe “sammy’s”.. it’s a lag bolt with the ability to thread in some all thread.. using these will probably not hold as much weight but may work for specific applications.

@@micjodan Sammys are rated for +200lbs each. That would more than suffice. Up to 2100lbs

Hi, I am trying to make this shelving. May I know how to anchor all thread to the ceiling? Thanks.
@micjodan
@micjodan 4 года назад
I have an attic above my garage so the all thread extends up through the drywall and through another stud. Then a nut and washer are tightened down on the stud.

At 0:34 i can see where you have like a ledge where you rested the plywood on, what was the process to create that? Was it as simple as running the 2x4 through a saw? Thanks
@micjodan
@micjodan 4 года назад
Yeah, I created that using a router. You can use a table saw and create the rabbet the same thickness as your sheeting material. I think it looks better to have the top edge of the sheet even with the top of the 2X4, but it is not necessary to do it.

@@micjodan i agree i like the flush look. Im debating whether putting the time in to make shelves similar or buy the ones on sale from costco. Price wise i think i save about $50, depends how much extra i want to put in (and how much help ill get)

@@micjodanDid you router all sides of the 2x4, even the back ledge to maintain level?
@Casmige
@Casmige 2 года назад
Would’ve been better to have the 2x4’s flat or the other way for more surface load-bearing area. Would’ve made the shelves thinner & less intrusively bulky without losing strength in the least bit.
@thisismiller6957

Having them oriented this way makes them much more structurally rigid for vertical loads.
