The fact that Guadagnino didn't try to make a carbon copy of the original but told his own story with the same basic plot and characters.

Spoiler alert - I completely disagree with your criticism of Dakota. I could not take my eyes off her when she appeared on the scene. She perfectly imprinted what the character asked for: a mysterious and determined woman, who did need to appear to be a little ahead of her time to pursue such an extravagant dream in the 1970s, as well as to possess unknown instincts of a witch-goddess. She managed to be sweet, sensual, restrained, emphatic and enigmatic, according to what each scene demanded. I think the prejudice and veiled charge imposed on Dakota, based on 50 shades of gray, is already outdated and never made sense. An actress also needs a good text and a good director to fulfill her role with excellence. And she attained this excellence in Suspiria. Bye
@anvb5a1
@anvb5a1 5 лет назад
Yes, indeed, they probably just have gotten too used to her in another movie / role and felt akward about this new one, but me, not even knowing the actress before (i don't give a damn about 50 shades), the character was perfect to me!

When you said Dakota Johnson felt too modern for the film I felt something similar about her but I felt that was a good thing, as an american from the 'New World' going to the 'Old World', it set her apart (aside from being the lead) and as the film suggested she becomes head of the academy, she's taking the coven forward into a new era. If that makes sense. I don't know. That's just me.

No talk of the dancing though??? I thought the way Luca and his choreographers incorporated "spells" and dancing together was so fresh. Speaking of, the "Volk" dance scene was one of the best scenes of the movie. I remember thinking, "I don't want this dance to end!", I felt like I was hypnotized or spellbound. Suspiria definitely left somewhat of a sour taste on my tongue when I left the theatre but now I realize this is probably how Luca felt when he saw the original and like me, he was drawn to the film and had a level of fixation on the creative choices made in the original as I feel with his reimagination. Props given to Luca, I feel how you felt and love film more than I did a month ago.

The video did not do the job, let me do that! (spoilers alert, ofc, DO NOT read this if you have not seen the movie yet!) Fairly simple, in fact: There's a coven of witches, disguised as a dance academy, the leader (Helena Markos, the most powerful witch of the coven) is dying and looking for a new body and has been fooling the witches into believing that she is one of the 3 mothers, the 3 mothers being pretty much the 3 original witches, predating good and evil on earth. (except the sharp Madame Blanc who is not fooled and would like to honestly lead the coven and probably knows that Markos is a fraud) Then comes Susie, entering the coven as a new student right before the witches perform a spell (dance) for the re-incarnation of Markos (of a mother, in fact...), Susie reveals herself at the end of the movie to actually have become the incarnation of one of the 3 mothers and she just violently puts an end to all that charade that's going on (litterally summons DEATH itself for all the witches who were part of the imposture of Markos!) and then leaves to roam the planet... (and at this point, i just pray for sequelS!)

"we" "need" used rather generously there. You want more movies like Suspiria for what? So that the fact that women are other women's worst enemy is further exposed? This film is so not self-aware with badly thought out dialogue such as when they drag the "male" psychologist while telling him HE is terrible for not believing women and diagnosing them with mental illness, as if that is somehow worse than, err I don't know, those same women MAKING other women crazy in the first place? A movie made for and by feminists, that's for sure. Dumb, weak ass arguments.
@TOAOM123
@TOAOM123 6 лет назад
@@mightytaiger3000 i mean the original Suspiria was female led too, but that's not what made it enjoyable. Its like they dont realize "wahmen" aren't the positive aspects; its good writing, scene composition, pacing, etc. Annihilation is a movie about smart people who make the worst possible decisions at every turn, with no good justification. Its a lovecraft story written by someone far less talented lacking even the base level understanding of what made lovecraft tales good. I hate this shit

Nice review! SPOILER: I thought that the theme of the sliced up pear (pair) permeates throughout, a film about division. The Witches, West/East Germany, the RAF and West Berlin, Klemperer and his estrangement with his missing wife, even a mention in the dialog of the split between the Mennonites and the Amish - showing this disunity throughout the picture, which is eventually brought to unity by the Witch of Sighs, Suspiriorum. Brilliant film.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the quiet, mousy witch who committed suicide at the dinner table? Why was she in particular so unstable? What was going on when they brought her body to "mother" markos? Was she simply upset that one of her followers had died? Or did i totally miss something? I'd appreciate anyone's insight, that part is bugging the hell out of me! (And yes, you will probably see this comment on every Suspiria ending explained review until i get some answers dammit! lol 😉)

I got this! See, for each witch of the covenant, there is a student linked to her. Just like Madame Blanc bonds with Susie, all students bond individually with a witch, in a very mother-daughter kind of fashion. That particular witch's student was... Olga! (the student who gives up, tries to leave and is tortured) She simply can't bare that failure and kills herself! (just like a mother losing her daughter, losing a part of herself, she has become a sad and weak witch, an empty witch!)

I thought that Susie took her knowledge of German dialect. It seemed right after Blanc said she needed to learn German ‘Edna mode’ stabbed herself in the NECK (voice, speech) and gave it to Susie like how she gained the ‘Jumps’ from the really tall girl
@roperjuliano1234
@roperjuliano1234 6 лет назад
@A Guy And His Channel The girl with glasses knew German and Susie didn't. They showed Blanc transfer one dancers skills to Susie (to make her jump higher). Blanc told Susie that she needs to be able to speak German for the dance and the girl with the glasses stabs herself in the neck (which is the source of your voice) and gave Susie the ability to speak German fluently as if she's lived in Berlin her whole life... at least how I observed it.

Small critique: There are always two types of film geeks: Those that love film and also love to share that love with others. They like to bring others into the world of cinema by sharing what they know and why it's significant. Not to impress others with their vast knowledge, but to enlighten. Then there's the pretentious, "I know so much about so many intricacies of filmmaking and the industry" types. They simply like to show off how much they know and let the world know that they know more than you do. The hosts of this vid leaned slightly on the latter side (especially the shorter one on the right). It's fine that you can reference obscure things. But referencing them just for the sake of doing it helps or enlightens no-one. So, less "check out how much shit I know" and more "hey, you should look into this if you want to understand this more fully".

Im completely obsessed with the 2018 version. The score by Thom Yorke keeps getting better each time I play it (preorder). Tilda as Klemperer was too noticeable/fake-looking and put me off a bit. The witches were excellent. Wish they'd had more screen time. Lots of loose ends (witch stabbing herself, Susie's past/kleptomania etc). Loved how similar it was to Kieslowski films in feel/look. Stunning aesthetic in costumes/cinematography. Didn't like the chapters...ruined the flow for me. Ending was epic and beautiful. Dakota's hair/wardrobe was very weird and unappealing for someone so stunning. Tilda looked incredible though as well as the coven. I want a movie just on them...plus a remake of Inferno/Tenebrae/Mother of Tears and Deep Red....pleeeease??

Same here. Had the music in my brain since I saw it a few days ago. Also agree that I think the old man would have been better played by an old man. No matter how good the make-up is you are always aware you are watching Tilda Swinton acting the part of an old man. She was really good at it but it didn't feel necessary to me. It momentarily took me out of things at times. Other than that I can't really find any quibbles. It's at least a 9 out of 10 and on par with the original for me. Considering how badly remakes can go they did a great job with the movie.

i've watched several reviews and no ones mentioned the flashback to susan's mother where she says her oldest (susan) was her sin or something. maybe a seconde viewing will clear it up but the whole time i was expecting something about the mother to be revealed as a witch or some kind of incestual relationship that brought forth susan as the reincarnation of mother sus. how was susan her greatest sin? btw i loved it and disagree about dakota being too modern. if anything i felt her characters look and feel helped us the audience see her in the way the witches did. not quite sure what but somehow drawn to her.

www.inverse.com/article/50208-suspiria-after-credits-scene-explained-by-luca-guadagnino-screenwriter-david-kajganich?refresh=20 According to the director, (and that makes total sense) she is like "browsing the world", foreseing the future, she's now out in the world upon us and sees beyond the camera! I love that explanation and immediately thought about one of the witches that we see in the end, her face still covered in blood, with a look in her eyes that just says: "dread"! I like that sense of "terrifying prospects" that the whole gives! What could happen? Are the 3 mothers coming to take on the planet? Does that mean an apocalypse? ... I really hope (so bad) that this is the beginning of a saga!

Susie, now Mother Suspiriorum, erases our memory and wants us to forget what we just witnessed. If you listen, a strange melody plays during that scene that's pretty much identical to the one that plays when she erases Dr. Klemperer's memory and guilt, and her hand is raised to the audience, again like she did with Josef. It's those little details that make this film an instant classic!

You can't tell. The film doesn't make any sense to me. Have seen it yesterday.
@anvb5a1
@anvb5a1 5 лет назад
@@KaraOke2808 It does! (spoilers alert, ofc, DO NOT read this if you have not seen the movie yet!) Fairly simple, in fact: There's a covenant of witches, disguised as a dance academy, the leader (Helena Markos, the most powerful witch of the covenant) is dying and looking for a new body and has been fooling the witches into believing that she is one of the 3 mothers, the 3 mothers being pretty much the 3 original witches, predating good and evil on earth. (except the sharp Madame Blanc who is not fooled and would like to honestly lead the covenant and probably knows that Markos is a fraud) Then comes Susie, entering the covenant as a new student right before the witches perform a spell (dance) for the re-incarnation of Markos, Susie reveals herself at the end of the movie to actually BE the incarnation of one of the 3 mothers and she just violently puts an end to all that charade that's going on (litterally summons DEATH itself for all the witches who were part of the imposture of Markos!) and then leaves to roam the planet... (and at this point, i just pray for sequelS!) Edit: Simple once you get it but i too had to think, read a bit on the lore and then go for a second delightful watch before i fully grasped it, i'm not usually into movies with that kind of esoteric approach to it, i usually like everything to be self-explanatory but i'm going that extra mile for this one with pleasure!

@@anvb5a1 so is the old woman at the end (the gross, nearly dead one) not a witch at all afterall? Or is she a witch but just not as powerful as she pretends? Or is she actually the "mother spirit" and she goes into Susie's body? Or is that Tilda Swinton? And what witch is she? And also why did everyone have to die at the end with the heads? And why Susie?
@Michelle-ew6ws

@@anvb5a1 also who is Markos? The spirit of the big time witch?
@anvb5a1
@anvb5a1 4 года назад
@@Michelle-ew6ws She (Markos) is just a which and pretended to be one of the 3 mothers so that the others would allow her to reincarnate but Susie actually IS one of the 3 mothers reincarnated and comes to kick her butt and set things right in the witch coven! And Tilda's character, Madame Blanc, is also just a witch, the one that should be the leader of the coven in fact but it all went south and corruption took place, this is why Susie calls death upon all the witches who voted for the old hag Markos! (probably because she is particularly infuriated that Markos killed the righteous Madame Blanc) Susie pretended to be fooled and was supposed to become the vessel for Markos to be reincarnated in, she is actually here for her demise!

Can't agree on the soundtrack. I think it adds considerably to it all. I avoided the movie a bit because I'm a big fan of the original but this challenges that. It might just actually be a better movie. I only saw it a few days ago so still reeling a bit from it. Sensory overload even without the colour from the original.

I completely understand what you're saying when you say "female focused films" and at the same time it's sad that it has to be mentioned. Films are unfortunately so ingrained with male focused plotlines that people treat it as the default trope whereas anything starring women is seen as "other" and "less than" other forms of storytelling. In a perfect world, the film and tv industry should always have an equal amount of female lead films alongside male led films with others being both male and female led. People should just see female led films as being no different from male led and just see us as fellow human beings, you know.
